These three innovative industry-driven programmes - the Master of Applied Computing (Lincoln), Graduate Diploma in ICT (Ara) and the Diploma for Graduates in ICT (Otago) - are designed for those who have not studied technology before and may not have a tech background. Open to degree holders in any discipline, learners have come from diverse backgrounds including medicine, philosophy, sociology, commerce, geography, marketing, engineering and humanities. If you already have a tech related degree, you can expand your expertise by focusing on a new area and gaining valuable industry skills and connections. A unique learning experience. Using immersive studio-based learning and realworld industry experience, these programmes produce graduates with a solid base of core tech skills, as well as the communication and collaborative skills required in the tech industry. Plan to fund sex worker role • By Louis Day CITY COUNCILLORS will decide today whether to fund a support person for sex workers. The New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective has applied for $40,099 from the city council’s metropolitan discretionary fund to help fund the wages of its street outreach co-ordinator. However, city council staff have recommended only $14,099 is given to the collective as it believes it is already in a “good financial position.” The street outreach co-ordinator directly supports street-based sex workers by connecting them with the appropriate health services and providing them with safe-sex products. The coordinator also works to prevent sex-workers from engaging in antisocial and dangerous behaviour that can cause unrest amongst communities. Another objective of the coordinator is to reduce acts of violence between sex workers and from members of the public. The city council sees the work of the co-ordinator as crucial in ensuring the safety of workers, especially considering five sex workers have been murdered in the city, including one last year. • By Louis Day THE VIABILITY of a park and ride facility for motorists travelling into the city from the south-west has been scrutinised. Earlier this year, city councillor Anne Galloway called on council staff to investigate the feasibility of a park and ride facility in the vicinity of Halswell which would allow residents to park their vehicles at and take public transport from into the central city. However, city council head of transport Richard Osborne said consultants have not yet identified a park and ride facility within the city’s boundaries as a cost-effective measure of improving bus patronage and access. He said it is also important to be wary of the traffic issues that can arise from the creation of park and ride facilities. Park and ride facilities can consolidate traffic to a single point and cause congestion by having very concentrated demand around when buses are arriving and departing. She still thought a park and ride model could be a good way to encourage people onto public transport and could compliment the bus priority lanes which are planned for Lincoln Rd. Galloway thought this was particularly pressing considering the city council’s goal of having a carbon-neutral city by 2045. In the 2016/2017 financial year, Christchurch emitted an estimated 2,485,335 gross tonnes in carbon emissions. Transportation was the largest contributor to the city’s emissions, accounting for 53 per cent. Thursday October 22 2020 The Star NEWS 17 Lyttelton fire subject of exhibition IT WAS after 10pm on October 24, 1870, when a fire started in an empty house on Lyttelton’s Oxford St between the Queen’s Hotel and a boot-maker’s shop. The flames quickly spread through nearby shops until both sides of London St were burning. The fire raged along Oxford St and Norwich Quay through wooden houses, stables, a warehouse full of wheat and two ship chandler’s (marine equipment) shops and then set most of the township ablaze in spite of the desperate efforts of the local brigade. Some of the drama of that night is captured in a new exhibition called Sifting the Ashes: The Great Fire of Lyttelton that has been researched and put together by Lyttelton Library staff for the Christchurch Heritage Festival. The display will feature original sources describing the progress of the fire, attempts to control it, and its aftermath as the damage was assessed and the town rebuilt. •Sifting the Ashes: The Great Fire of Lyttelton, at Lyttelton Library, runs until November 14.
