FOCUS ON HEALTH
Natural vision support
Bilberry and marigold are two natural
herbs with a long history in supporting
the health of the eyes and good vision.
During World War 2, British bomber
pilots reported improved night vision
after a nightly dose of bilberry jam before
missions. Subsequent research suggested
that bilberry extract may improve
microcirculation within the eye, with the
most significant effects found in people
with impaired visual acuity.
Bilberries contain powerful antioxidant
compounds called anthocyanins that may
play a major role in supporting eye health
and even in improving the vision.
One of the main causes of degenerative
eye diseases such as macular degeneration
relates to an increase in free radical
activity that damages healthy cells in the
eyes. The anthocyanins from the bilberry
help reduce this free radical damage that
could lead to serious eye disease.
Bilberry has also been shown to
improve oxygen and blood delivery to the
eye, important factors for maintaining eye
health.
Bilberry is commonly used to support
night vision and alleviate tired eyes,
eye strain and dry eyes. It is considered
beneficial for most eye conditions,
including cataracts, disorders of the
retina, and to prevent eye problems,
especially in people with diabetes or high
blood pressure.
The retina is a thin layer of tissue at
the back of the eye that transforms light
information into neural signals for the
brain to see images.
The retina is very fragile and can be
damaged by bright light, especially blue
light. Computer monitors, cellphones,
electronic notebooks, televisions, LED and
fluorescent lighting all emit significant
amounts of blue light and may have long
term effects on the retina.
The carotenoid lutein, as found in
marigold flowers, is concentrated in the
macula, the functional centre of the retina.
The macula gives us the ability to see
detail and provides the best colour vision.
Lutein appears to be a vital in protecting
the macula from blue light damage.
Multiple studies have shown that people
with eye diseases have much lower levels
of lutein in their eyes and that increasing
intake of lutein can reduce the risk of
macular degeneration, the leading cause
of blindness in older people.
One study of people in India, where
cataracts are a common problem found
that those with the highest blood levels of
lutein had a 41% lower risk of developing
cataracts, compared to those with the
lowest levels.
OPINION
Future-focused briefing
for ministers under way
I’M SURE there will be
much written about the
election result over the
coming weeks.
All I’m going to say
is that it was a decisive
result, and it is the Rt Hon
Jacinda Ardern who will
form a government within
the next two to three
weeks.
In the meantime, we are
cracking on with finalising
a Briefing to Incoming
Ministers, which is a process
I have adapted from
my time in government.
After an election, government
departments,
ministries and entities present
such a briefing to their
new or returning minister,
so they can be updated on
what is happening in their
portfolio, but with an eye
to any change in direction
signalled during the election
campaign. This is to
Motorway
on-ramp
Our ongoing concerns
about safety all stem from
the New Zealand Transport
Agency‘s original
design of how to move
Lincoln traffic onto the
new motorway.
In the original plan,
Lincoln traffic was to use
Hamptons Rd as a path
of least resistance onto
Shands Rd with no access
to the motorway through
Prebbleton, only via the
Shands Rd on-ramp, hence
no on-ramp to the motorway
off Halswell Junction
Rd.
I was told this by an
NZTA representative at an
information evening for
the proposed motorway.
SO NOW the motorway
is open there are serious
deficiencies in design and
operation of the whole
roading network in and
around Prebbleton clearly
driven by the growth in the
area. – Chris White
New bus colour
Metro announced that
it wants to standardise the
colour of the buses rather
than use the bus company’s
individual schemes.
Fair enough.
The bus users find that
the various bus route colours
(orange, blue, purple,
etc) for the main routes are
much easier to recognise
than the route numbering
system and would prefer to
retain this. Fair enough.
As a compromise,
paint the front of the bus
with the route colour
(orange, blue, etc) and
continue to use the back
enable both the ministers
and officials to ‘hit the
ground running’.
I used the model for the
first time in 2014, and then
again in 2017. It proved to
be a good way to get issues
on the table that affected
our city.
This time, there will be a
Greater Christchurch BIM
with the mayors of Selwyn
and Waimakariri district
councils and the chair of
ECan joining me in signing
off a future-focused
briefing, which captures
the essence of the opportunity
that co-investment
offers the government in
Mayor
for advertising as at present
which would keep ratepayers
happy by reducing
costs. Fair enough.
Metro should roll out the
achieving their ambitious
goals for New Zealand.
They can’t fully achieve
those goals without us,
which is why we will aim
for a Regional Strategic
Partnership.
We can also help ensure
the effective delivery of
their Covid-19 Recovery
Plan, which includes
projects that secure critical
infrastructure, combat
climate change, reduce
waste and increase green
energy use.
They are all important
for our future and the
future of generations to
come.
Mitre 10 rugby
I think it is a disgrace the
way Ian Foster, ( following
on the Steve Hansen model),
releases so few players
to play Mitre 10 Cup. These
are players not in the All
Black match day squads.
These guys need rugby
and it is not fair on the
provincial unions. This of
course particularly detrimental
to our Canterbury
side and Crusader neighbours
Tasman.
Outstanding players
like Cullen Grace, Mitch
Dunshea (Canterbury),
and Will Jordan (Tasman),
were not released to play
last weekend, that was
costly for those two teams.
The same goes for all fit
players in this AB squad
not released.
The NZRFU have allowed
a system under
Steve Hansen and now
Ian Foster to perpetuate
itself. It is not good for the
provincial competition
and for the rugby players
and fans alike. – Graham
