Volunteer call<br />

There is always aneed for volunteers in<br />

many areas of thecommunity. They forma<br />

base foundation for many sectors.<br />

Just think about yourinterests and chances<br />

are organisations, sport clubs, or community<br />

groups in those areas are in need of reliable<br />

volunteers who can help them provide their<br />

service.<br />

Either approach those organisations<br />

directly or check out Volunteering Midand<br />

South Canterbury website www.<br />

volunteermatch.org.nz to see which<br />

volunteer role may be best suited for you.<br />

Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury is<br />

based at Community House Mid Canterbury<br />

and has scores of roles in need of filling.<br />

They include social companions, support<br />

people, van drivers, handy people, potato<br />

pickers, catering crew, photographers and<br />

walkers.<br />

Alternatively give Volunteering Mid and<br />

can help find avolunteer role that is right for<br />

Liz Quaidvolunteers forthe<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>Museum.<br />

She startedmore than 12 years ago<br />

because of her interest in history.<br />

She has been on the museum<br />

committee and is oneofthe friendly<br />

faces at the front desk to help people<br />

with their queries.<br />

She has also spent time “out the<br />

back”helping out where needed and<br />

is akeen researcherin her spare<br />

time. In the past Liz hasmade herself<br />

more than familiar with the lives of<br />

many of <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s past residents.<br />

She hasdone personal research<br />

into <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s wardead, creating a<br />

database of information, including<br />

photographs, of all <strong>Ashburton</strong> World<br />

War One soldiers, casualties and<br />

returned soldiers. Her workhas taken<br />

more than adecadeand the project is<br />

only about half finished.<br />

She hasalso researched the people<br />

in the district whodied of flu deaths<br />

in the 1880s,others wholived in<br />

Tuarangi Home from the late1800s up<br />

to 1930s, and othersofthe time who<br />

lived alongthe <strong>Ashburton</strong>riverbed.<br />

Therewas quite awee community<br />

along the riverbed, including many<br />

Last year ourvolunteers donated hundreds of hours<br />

of driver support,shopping assistance,food parcel<br />

She has around 60 names of people<br />

who lived there at some time which<br />

warrantedthe health authority of the<br />

day to place ahut along the riverbed<br />

for the men to live in.<br />

❛Liz has made herself<br />

familiar with the lives of<br />

many of <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s<br />

historical residents.<br />

Liz’s intends theinformation<br />

gathered in her research will<br />

eventually form partofthe <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Museum’s archive collection.<br />

Liz enjoys volunteeringasaway to<br />

giveback to the community and<br />

connect withpeople in roles where<br />

she has an interest.<br />

She alsovolunteers with the Mid<br />

Canterbury Ridingfor theDisabled,<br />

Save the Children <strong>Ashburton</strong> and the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Family History<br />

Group.<br />

At the museum she is one of around<br />

20 volunteers rostered to work.<br />

The museum, which hasfree entry,<br />

Community House Mid Canterbury<br />

are pleased to support International<br />

Volunteers Day and welcome<br />

enquiries from people wishing to join<br />

the volunteer bank<br />

Islandersvisiting, and more locals<br />

coming back, Lizsays.<br />

Many had items of interest from<br />

around the district they thought<br />

usefulfor museum archives, and<br />

others werekeentolookaround.<br />

The latestmuseum exhibit, running<br />

alongside their extensive collection<br />

of historical exhibits, was Reel Life of<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>,acollection of brief<br />

historical and varied home movies<br />

from around the district.<br />

It will run throughout the summer.<br />

Thereisalso TheGreat Santa Hunt<br />

whichisoninthe <strong>Ashburton</strong>Museum<br />

this month and promises thrilling fun<br />

for kids of all ages.<br />

The launchofthe event is on<br />

Wednesday, <strong>December</strong>16whenthe<br />

lights of the museum get turned off<br />

andchildrenuse torches brought<br />

from hometofind Santa hiding<br />

aroundthemuseum.<br />
