Organiser Carol Johns says volunteers dressed as clowns and other festive or famous characters would hand out chips, lollies or balloons to children, or be part of the festivities waving to thosealong the route. It helps to make the parade morefestive to the manychildren and adults who come along to watchthe parade and take part in the annual event. You meet people from anywhere and everywhere,she says. She is one of around 20 volunteers who, alongside paid staff, help keep the Ashburton Art Gallery ticking along. It’s aroleshe has beendoingsince the galleryopened at its West Street premises five years ago. ‘‘I love art,’’ Linda says,who is especiallyfullofpraise for the art gallery facility, which had abetter public presencedue to its main road location. It’s easy accessand has high visibility,she says. ‘‘It’s anice thing to be involved in.” 2337302 She is also on thegallery committee. And although she is not aconventional artist, Linda likes to express herself through her clothing; she sewsand makes bespoke clothingfor herself, and adaughter. Her favouritegenre of workswere abstract pieces or multimediaworks similar to those in the latest exhibiton show in the foyer by Year 10 students from Mount Hutt College. The students’ collaborative works, which will be in the foyerfor the next four months, were in response to the collectionThe Chair by New Zealand artistPhilip Clairmont. The art gallery also hostedexciting eventssuch as music recitals and one act plays,Linda says. She is on aroster with others doing volunteerwork three days amonth, for afew hourseach time.There’s achoice of what suitsand it’s flexible, she says. Whilethere werefew international visitors,there were many Kiwis touring and calling in on their travels. Theyare looking for things of interest as theyare travelling New Zealand, she says. “I think we’re getting a(good) name forthe variety of our exhibitions.” The gallery has the Mount Hutt exhibitiononinthe foyer fromnow until April 8, 2021 and along withthe ceramic talents of DunedinartistBlue Black (on untilJanuary16), willhave thetouring exhibition, Thinking Unfolding,from the Print Councilof Aotearoa New Zealand opening on December 9. Providing therapeutic riding rehabilitation and horse related activities for those who may benefit in the Mid Canterbury area. They forma base foundation for many sectors. Just think about yourinterests and chances are organisations, sport clubs, or community groups in those areas are in need of reliable volunteers who can help them provide their service. Either approach those organisations directly or check out Volunteering Midand South Canterbury website www. volunteermatch.org.nz to see which volunteer role may be best suited for you. Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury is based at Community House Mid Canterbury and has scores of roles in need of filling. They include social companions, support people, van drivers, handy people, potato pickers, catering crew, photographers and walkers. Alternatively give Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury acall on 3081237 and they can help find avolunteer role that is right for you. Liz Quaid is one of the friendly front of house volunteers at Ashburton Museum. Historyinterestcomesalive TONI.WILLIAMS @ashburtoncourier.co.nz Liz Quaidvolunteers forthe AshburtonMuseum. She startedmore than 12 years ago because of her interest in history. She has been on the museum committee and is oneofthe friendly faces at the front desk to help people with their queries. She has also spent time “out the back”helping out where needed and is akeen researcherin her spare time. In the past Liz hasmade herself more than familiar with the lives of many of Ashburton’s past residents. She hasdone personal research into Ashburton’s wardead, creating a database of information, including photographs, of all Ashburton World War One soldiers, casualties and returned soldiers. Her workhas taken more than adecadeand the project is only about half finished. She hasalso researched the people in the district whodied of flu deaths in the 1880s,others wholived in Tuarangi Home from the late1800s up to 1930s, and othersofthe time who lived alongthe Ashburtonriverbed. Therewas quite awee community along the riverbed, including many Thankyou to all ourbrilliant and wonderful volunteers. Last year ourvolunteers donated hundreds of hours of driver support,shopping assistance,food parcel organisationand companionship.Wanttojoin them? At the museum she is one of around 20 volunteers rostered to work. It will run throughout the summer. Thereisalso TheGreat Santa Hunt whichisoninthe AshburtonMuseum this month and promises thrilling fun for kids of all ages. The launchofthe event is on Wednesday, December16whenthe lights of the museum get turned off andchildrenuse torches brought from hometofind Santa hiding aroundthemuseum. Itruns from 5pmto7pm.
