given by Red Cross <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s Donna Hitchcox, Sheila Graham and<br />

New defibmachine<br />
donated to hospice<br />
HospiceMid Canterbury has<br />
been given a$5500 defibrillator<br />
by Red Cross <strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
The new machine was<br />
couriered up fromTimaru<br />
yesterday by DonnaHitchcox,<br />
who gavehospice volunteer<br />
services managerBelinda Brand<br />
arundown on its workings.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Red Cross president<br />
Sheila Graham and Jan Dowie<br />
were there for the handover too.<br />
Sheila said the branchdonated<br />
two defibrillators ayear to local<br />
groupsand thehospice wasgood<br />
recipient;the defibrillatorcan be<br />
usedbystaff and visitors, and<br />
community members who live<br />
nearby.<br />
Donna said acommunity the<br />
size of <strong>Ashburton</strong> needed 15 or<br />
more defibrillators, which are<br />
usedtorestart someone’s heart<br />
when they stop breathing. This<br />
could be the result of aheart<br />
attack(most likely),drowning or<br />
suffocation.<br />
She said peopleshould not be<br />
fearfulabout using a<br />
defibrillator.Assoon as it is<br />
opened, the machine gives<br />
instructions on how to use it and<br />
how to check the patient’s<br />
symptoms.<br />
‘‘It talkstoyou.You justhaveto<br />
followinstructions.’’<br />
Donna said aheart attack<br />
victim had up to 80 per cent<br />
survival chanceifamachine was<br />
used, compared to three per cent<br />
without.<br />
There wasnoway to incorrectly<br />
shock someoneand themachine<br />
had asmart brain that gave<br />
advice.<br />
She said it wasagood ideafor<br />
people to knowwhere there<br />
nearest defibrillator was and the<br />
informationwas accessed<br />
throughanapp AEDlocations.<br />
