Hospice Mid Canterbury’s Belinda Brand holds the new defibrillator
given by Red Cross Ashburton’s Donna Hitchcox, Sheila Graham and
Jan Dowie.
New defibmachine
donated to hospice
HospiceMid Canterbury has
been given a$5500 defibrillator
by Red Cross Ashburton.
The new machine was
couriered up fromTimaru
yesterday by DonnaHitchcox,
who gavehospice volunteer
services managerBelinda Brand
arun­down on its workings.
AshburtonRed Cross president
Sheila Graham and Jan Dowie
were there for the handover too.
Sheila said the branchdonated
two defibrillators ayear to local
groupsand thehospice wasgood
recipient;the defibrillatorcan be
usedbystaff and visitors, and
community members who live
nearby.
Donna said acommunity the
size of Ashburton needed 15 or
more defibrillators, which are
usedtorestart someone’s heart
when they stop breathing. This
could be the result of aheart
attack(most likely),drowning or
suffocation.
She said peopleshould not be
fearfulabout using a
defibrillator.Assoon as it is
opened, the machine gives
instructions on how to use it and
how to check the patient’s
symptoms.
‘‘It talkstoyou.You justhaveto
followinstructions.’’
Donna said aheart attack
victim had up to 80 per cent
survival chanceifamachine was
used, compared to three per cent
without.
There wasnoway to incorrectly
shock someoneand themachine
had asmart brain that gave
advice.
She said it wasagood ideafor
people to knowwhere there
nearest defibrillator was and the
informationwas accessed
throughanapp AEDlocations.
