Christmasmusic filled theair in<br />
downtown <strong>Ashburton</strong> on Saturday for<br />
the annual Lightupthe Night.<br />
Thousands of peoplegathered to<br />

Christmastree, in the grounds of<br />
BaringSquare East, by the town<br />
clock.The tree wasadorned with<br />
decorations ahead of theevening. It<br />
was litbydeputymayor Liz<br />

FatherChristmasand two elves<br />
made aspecial appearance aheadof<br />
their busy <strong>December</strong> period and<br />
there were performances from Life<br />
Dance Academy, Christchurch City<br />
Chorus andthe SamoanChristian<br />
CongregationalChurch Group.<br />
There were alsofood trucks,free<br />
facepainting and gift giveaways<br />
made available througha<br />
partnership between the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
District Council and local<br />
businesses,before the giant<br />
Christmastree was lit at the end of<br />
the night.<br />
The main sponsor TruLineCivil,<br />
who are working on the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
CBD streetscapecontractor, also had<br />
diggersand trucks on site for kids to<br />
explore.<br />

business districtfrom 6pm through<br />
until 9pm.<br />

New speed limits<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> district motoristswill soon see new<br />
speed limit signs around the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
business estate, Fairton, Mayfield, Methven<br />
Mt Somers and Tinwald.<br />
The <strong>Ashburton</strong> DistrictCouncil reviewed<br />
speed limits around the district earlier this<br />
yearand changeswill be in force from<br />
<strong>December</strong>11. Nearly 260submissions were<br />
receivedduring the reviewprocess, with<br />
schools asking for reducedspeeds outside<br />
their gates.<br />
Speedlimits have changed on roads on the<br />
outskirtsofpopulated areas, reflecting urban<br />
growth. Special signs are planned for rural<br />
(60km/h) and urban (40km/h) school zones.<br />

Recycling habits improve<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>people haveimproved their<br />
recyclinghabits with contamination levels<br />
dropping to 3.45 per centoverOctober.<br />
Council staffcontinuetomonitor 1502<br />
properties (13.3per centofthe wheeliebins<br />
collected) and287 properties are on their<br />
thirdwarning.Bins havebeen removedfrom<br />
76 properties because of repeatedpoor<br />
recycling efforts.<br />
Only hardplasticsnumbered 1, 2and 5can<br />
now be recycled, plusglass,cleancardboard<br />
and paper, tinsand aluminium cans.Nolids<br />
of any shapeorsize are accepted.<br />
Tinwald pool ready to rock<br />
Staff have conductedmore than 45,000bin<br />
audits since August, when the recycling<br />
changes came in.<br />
Council’s solid waste management team is<br />
currently completing the rooffor the<br />
cardboard bunker at the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Recovery<br />
Park.The projectwas delayed by covid. A<br />
tender for the work will be released in<br />
coming months.<br />
Atender to deliver wasteand water<br />
sustainabilityeducationservices will alsobe<br />
releasedthis month. Thecurrent contract<br />

Tinwald pool is open and ready for the new swimming season, as too are lifeguards Aidan<br />
Campbell and Bree Harrison. Bree, who is studying human nutrition at Otago University, will<br />
be aregular at the outdoor pool over summer while Aidan, who is studying software<br />
engineering at the University of Canterbury, will be rostered at Tinwald and the EA Networks<br />
Centre facility. The Tinwald pool is open from 127pm at the weekends and on weekdays from<br />
47pm.<br />
