Salmon run starts
Beginner’s luck paid
off for Vicky Van Der
Zwet (right) when she
caught her first ever
salmon near the
Rakaia River mouth
at the weekend.
Vicky caught the
perfectly
conditioned fish in
the lagoon near the
mouth on Saturday
night.
The jack weighed
in at 8.10kg, with a
length of 810mm.
There have been afew salmon
sighted in the lower Rakaia
River recently and Fish and
Game say it's great to see these
early salmon have fed well at sea
and are in great condition.
With more and more Kiwis
travelling around
New Zealand this
summer, the
opportunity is there
for more people to
buy afishing licence
and try abit of
salmon fishing.
The big South
Island East Coast
rivers of the
Waimakariri, Rakaia,
Rangitata and
Waitaki have long
been the focus of
annual pilgrimages
for many anglers chasing the
sleek silver bullets called
salmon.
This year the salmon season
runs from October 1until March
31 2021, and anglers are allowed
to catch one fish per day.
The skies above Mid Canterbury were busy with pilots showing off
their aerobatic skills at the weekend. The annual South Island
aerobatic championships were held, with organisers opting to shift
from the busier air space at Blenheim. The Ashburton airport venue
was given the thumbs up.
