Ashburton U3A
It is almost worth living
another thirty years+to see how
predictions of trends actually
happen.
Thismonth’sspeaker,
Distinguished Professor Dr Paul
Spoonley,comes with an
impressive CV including recently
theVice Chancellorfor
Humanitiesand Social Sciences
at MasseyUniversity. He spoke
about how the 1960’s in New
Zealand broughtradicalsocial
change,and we are at the
watershed of anew setof
dynamics; somecovid
influenced, but an upheaval of
society norms.
Wehavethe inverse of the
traditional population pyramid
developing–more people65+
and fewer014,which is high in
comparisontoother countries
suchas theUSA. This has many
implications, such as the age of
superannuationand the
workforce to supportthem:the
increasingrole of immigrants
and theirdiversities.
Fertilityratesare declining
withsocial implications of
having justone, or even more
than onechild; more are opting
not to havefamilies, andmothers
are increasingly comparatively
older.There are now more over
40yearold mothers thanunder
twenties. Life expectancy is
increasing–today’s littlies could
live on averagetotheir 90’splus.
Womenare moreeducatedand
enjoy good jobs.
The Queen once had one
secretary tocongratulate those
over100; shenow has fourteen.
The BabyBoomersare
redefining aging, and are
generallywealthier andmore
active, but still with agerelated
poverty.Housingcan take nine
years’ wages when it used to take
one year’s salary.In1970’s the
workingpopulation of 65+ for
superannuationpurposes was
4:1, now itis1:1.1.
Modernfamiliesand
marriagenormshaveshifted
fromthe traditional nuclear
models to amuchgreater
diversity. Today’sschool leavers
must continuetoexpect to be
flexible,skilled,with good work
habitsand innovation, and be
prepared formany career
changes.
Urban growth willcontinue
changing,with maintowns
growing slowly and rural area
declining.Ashburton is “leading
the pack” of main towns.
Auckland will dominate growth.
We willnot again see4million
tourists yearly foraverylong
time. Thereare amillion New
Zealanders currentlyliving
overseas. Growtharound the
use and availability of water
will influencesustainability of
progress. Evolving ownershipof
family farmstodifferent
models,and the agingworkforce
in areas suchastruckdrivers
areotherissues.
Immigrationwillbeasource
of populations andskills,
innovation and use of
international markets. The
coviddisruption of immigration
flows causes huge problems,
with innovations such as
robotics becoming morea
common remedy. Of course,
covid has disrupted economies
globally.The world will
probably not be able to resume
personal air travel as we had
until 2014, andcruises are not
recommended. Airlines such as
Emiratesare now requiring
documentation of covid testing
forany flights. New Zealandhas
themost diverse Parliament in
the world. The shift to afouryear
termseems to be
inevitable. Andofcourse,
changes globally and in New
Zealand happenhourly.
Call for projects
Ministry for Primary Industries
(MPI) is calling for proposals for
projects that will investigate
regenerative farming practices.
Funding forsuccessful
proposals is being made
available through MPI's
Sustainable Food&Fibre
Futures (SFF Futures) coinvestment
fund. Thefund aims
to have projects under way by
mid2021.
MPI director investment
programmes Steve Penno said
there was increasinginterest
from farmers and thewider
community about regenerative
agriculture practices, but
definitions for regenerative
agriculture could vary
dramatically.
‘‘We're looking to define what
regenerative agriculture means
from aNew Zealandperspective,
and develop asound evidence
base to test and confirm what
works in our soils, climates, and
farming systems.’’
MPI's chief science adviser, Dr
John Roche, said broadly
speaking, MPI saw regenerative
farming as aset of practices that,
in isolationorcollectively, could
see improved outcomes for
productive land,freshwater and
marine environments, climate,
animals, and for the people that
grow andconsumer foodand
fibre products.
‘‘Regenerative agriculture is
not a'onesizefitsall' activity
with prescribed inputs and
outputs and the farmers I’ve
Dr John Roche.
spoken with do not want it
defined so tightly,’’ Dr Roche
said.
‘‘Some of the practices New
Zealand farmers are already
using could be considered
regenerative.Bydetermining
which farming practices have a
positive impacton
environmental sustainability and
human health and wellbeing in
the NewZealand context, we'll be
able to confidently share these
regenerative practices widely
with farmers.
‘‘Regenerative agriculture also
has the potential to help ourfood
and fibres sectortoproduce
higher value products with even
stronger environmental
credentials.
‘‘Animportantpartofthese
projects will be turningthe
findings into practical
information for farmers, to help
them adopt methods that work.’’
