Between rain showersMr Browneven took aspinaround the track on abicycle lentto himbystudent Emily Wilson. The620metretrackweaves around the unused exterior of the school grounds. Senior pupils Islabelle Taylor and ShikaylaBlair led the formalities, thanking those in attendence, which also included district councillor Stuart Wilson,business representatives andmembers of theschool community. Hinds Lions andDistricts’ RonFerriman andMalcolm Read were alsopresentand gave thepupils a$2500 donation towardthe track fundraising. The girls werethankful for the support received to helpget the studentledbike track up andrunning and made special thankstoparent Kate Moorhead for her guidance with approaching people for sponsorship. Thetrack had aprice tag of around $20,000. They also read out the names of the businesses, individuals and families who were gold, silver and bronze level sponsors. Theproject had the experience of bike track engineerCam Bisset,who helped tweak and polishthe children’s original design ideas into a3Dmodel. Therural school wasmostly surrounded by 100km roading zones, so many of the pupils did not have safe areas to ride a bike. Andwith State Highway 1 runningthrough the middle of the town, bikingtoschoolfor many was not ideal. After aschool wheelsday, the pupils put together acase study, made aclay tabletop model of their design ideas and got their fundraising project under way.Otherfundraisers included iceblock sales, sausagessizzles,hosting an adventure race andselling preloved clothing. There were still wooden features to be added over the school holidays,but once completed the trackwillhave berms, asee saw,triple jumps and apump track. Thechildren are also looking to haveashippingcontainer on site to store spare bikesthat childrenwithout bikes can use. Thecontainer will include a small workshop where children, using parentsor bike shop owners, canbetaught basic repairs and maintenance on thebikes. At theofficial opening, the whole school gotachance to either bring their own bikes,or scooters, andhelmets to use on the track, or could jump on a Pedalmaniabike for abit of fun with an assortmentofbikes. Cultural focus at Borough School Multiculturaldiversity was celebrated with activities and language at Ashburton BoroughSchoollastweek. Itsaw pupilsand teachers dress up in traditional and not so traditional clothingthat representedtheirculture, sportsteamorhobby. It wasafun day to celebrate thediversity within the school. There was alsoachanceto learnsome skills with classes pairing up with abuddy class to do culturalbasedactivities, helped by willing andable whanau. Aswellasamulticultural assemblypresented bilingually in Englishand Tagalog (a language of the Philippines) at the Sinclair Centre,with aperformanceby the St JosephSchool’s Filipino dance group. In the pastthe annualevent has alsoinvolved asharedpotlucklunch with dishesfrom aroundthe world brought into classes to sample butthisdid not happen yeardue tocovid precautions.
