Outdoor Play Provides Opportunities forBetter Exercise. We all know that as adultsshould be getting at least 30 minutes of exercisea day. For children, it is advised that they shouldget 60 minutes a day and this is even moreimportant throughout the winter. When childrendon’t exercise enough, this excess energy canaffect their sleep cycle and appetite, which inturn affects their development and ability tomaintain a healthy body weight. While exercise,in general, regulates this and ensures a healthylifestyle, winter exercise, in particular, isessential for muscle growth, strength andgross-motor development.Winter Play Helps Children’s CognitiveDevelopment too… like exercise, outdoor playalso provides opportunities for learning anddevelopment, some of which are exclusive tothose winter months. With outdoor playequipment or trees and branches being wet,frozen or covered in snow, children arechallenged with finding alternatives whichstimulate their imaginations and offers differentways to learn. Physical and cognitive challengessuch as ‘how will I pack this snow tightly tobuild the shapes I want?’ or ‘how do I navigatethis slippery muddy area without losing myfooting?’ and becoming aware that they need toadapt their behaviour in this new and less safeenvironment, all ensure that they learnimportant life lessons and develop vital skills.Playing Outdoors Supplies Children withEssential Vitamin D.
