As we prepare to turn the page on the 

Worst Year Ever ( your mileage may 

vary), I thought I’d ditch the carping 

for one week and talk about things I 

like. Sadly, this means that my 1200- 

word breakdown on the awfulness that is Big 

Sky on ABC will have to wait until February 

2021 (Exit Zero takes a six-week hiatus every 

winter, sorry to break it to you…). This gives 

us enough time to recharge the batteries, kick 

around ideas, get a little sleep (not Jack Wright, 

he’s expecting a baby) and figure out how the 

hell we’re going to get through another year. 

Anyway, here some things I like from 2020; 

Jim Seeland. Jim is a huge fan of my acoustic 

duo, TNT (I’m one “T”, Tim Joyce is the 

other, the “N” is short for “and” so, TNT = 

Terry and Tim, get it? Carrying on…) and a fellow 

admirer of the vocalist Paul Carrack (Ace, 

Squeeze, Mike & the Mechanics). He always 

greets us with a smile, a little dance and at least 

one $5 bill, often two or three. I also like his 

wife, Mary Kay, but Jim brings the cash, so he 

gets top billing. 

Tim Joyce. Not only a fantastic singer, guitar 

player and musical partner, but also one of 

my best friends since setting foot in Cape May 

for the first time in May of 1993. Hard to believe 

we’ve spent more years together as TNT (six) 

than we did in Southwind (five), but here we 

are. 2020 was a little extra 2020 for Tim, but 

if you see him don’t bring it up, just put an 

extra $10 in our tip jar. (We’ll continue seeing 

you weekends after the holidays, assuming our 

government allows us to eat inside, and not just 

outside but inside outside.) 

Nancy Malcun. I will try not to be as effu- 

sive in my praise of Nancy this week as I usually 

am, but it’s hard not to once you’ve sung 

side-by-side with her over multiple weekends. 

She is the real deal. And I try to enjoy every 

moment with her at Exit Zero because soon 

she’ll be out there with the Taylor Swifts and 

Ariana Grandes of the world doing it for herself. 

But hopefully not for at least one more year 

because I’m greatly looking forward to Nancy 

& Terry on Tuesdays next summer. One of us 

by ourselves is awesome. Two of us on a duet is 

fughedaboudit. 

Harpoon’s on the Bay, specifically Brady 

Schoenrock, and Beach Shack at Rusty Nail, 

specifically Myra Vassian. TNT was able to 

have its most prolific summer yet, despite all 

the restrictions that truncated it, thanks to 

these two venues and talent bookers. I’m sure 

many others, musical acts and listeners, feel 

the same. Thank you. 

The WXPN Best 2020 Songs of All-Time 

Countdown. This little diversion took my 

mind off the Pandemic Universe for a week in 

December as I tuned in as often as possible to

WCFA-LP. The Little Station 

That Could took massive creative 

leaps this year, becoming something 

of an XPN-Lite, as they cut 

Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu. 

If this past year had happened in 

the pre-streaming Dark Ages of, 

say, 2007, I’m not sure how I would 

have survived. To put a finer point 

on it, I’m not sure how my family 

would have survived. Literally. 

Larry Crinkle. The crass Davis 

Hyundai (Ewing, NJ) spokesperson 

I helped create and embodied 

in a series of 2015 commercials 

may be making a comeback in 

2021. Bonus: it may be opposite 

an Eagles legend. A Philadelphia 

Eagles legend, not one from the 

overrated, self-important softrock 

act from the 70s. (Yes, I sing 

about 10 of their songs every 

weekend, but that doesn’t mean 

I like it!)

jazz (a great form of music, but, 

really, who needs more than an 

hour of it a week?) and added 

more on air talent with great taste 

in music and wisely gave them 

free reign. Still too much reggae, 

but I suppose all art is subjective 

so I’ll give them a pass. Great job, 

guys! (“The Undertow: Far From 

the Mainstream” may still become 

a show in 2021, but that would 

open me up to massive amounts 

of ridicule and I get enough of that 

at home.) 

Lee DeStefano. The Exit Zero

Chief is a good dude and one of the 

few people I can talk 70s and 80s

just because he’s in them, absolutely 

melted down on his Mission:

to Covid strictures. If you think it 

was all about Tom Cruise protecting 

Tom Cruise’s paycheck, listen 

again; it was about saving the production 

from shutdown and protecting 

the literally thousands of 

jobs it created. Tom Cruise being 

awesome is a hill I will die on.

The Age of Netflix created a ine line 

between “Oscar Buzzworthy in 

Variety” and “made-for-TV garden 

variety.” The magazine posted more 

predictions, and I end this year with 

a few of my own. The Oscars are on hold until 

April 25 with hopes of an in-person ceremony. 

That remains to be seen, but at least 

there won’t be an urgency to cover ground 

when this column resumes in a few weeks. 

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom streams on 

Netflix. This is Chadwick Boseman’s last ilm, 

adapted from a play of the same name by 

August Wilson. It’s a biopic about the Mother 

of the Blues singer/recording artist, Gertrude 

Pridgett (aka Ma Rainey). Viola Davis plays 

Rainey and Boseman, her mouthy trumpeter. 

This ilm gives both a genuine melody of 

everyday life in the 1920s and a deeper cut of 

social injustices that certainly play on today. 

Boseman is remarkable. My eulog column 

this year explored his afinity for biopics. 

His character in Ma Rainey may not be historic, 

but he stretches to give us his last exemplary

performance. Although decorated with dozens 

of awards and nominations nationwide 

and globally, the Academy has never recognized 

him. Hopefully, that is put right in 2021. 

Another ilm with big time buzz is Tenet, 

the latest from Christopher Nolan. This ilm 

has an ambitious premise. Imagine that 

objects and people can essentially reverse 

in time. I know — time bender AND mindbender, 

right? This reminds me of Inception 

(2010). I went against the grain and didn’t 

necessarily praise that ilm — honestly, I got 

lost. Well, you can get lost with Tenet as well. 

However, somehow Nolan keeps you up to 

speed long enough to really enjoy it. 

Similar to Inception, you probably need to 

see it a couple times to fully understand what’s 

going on. But at two-and-a-half hours, I’ll 

pass. Still, I liked it. It will receive accolades 

during some award show — maybe an Oscar. 

Hillbilly Elegy is from Ron Howard, starring 

Amy Adams and Glenn Close. It’s about 

one man’s struggle to overcome his upbringing 

and improve his life. Gabriel Basso plays 

the dutiful son who must rescue his mother 

(Adams) from herself. The ilm had its 

moments but fell short of Oscar storytelling. 

The themes seemed played out, like many 

made-for-TV dramas. I do hope Close gets her 

irst Oscar win. She’s been at this for decades 

with many nominations but zero gold. 

It’s been an interesting year for ilm — one 

with seemingly more to enjoy than usual. Stay

Ihave never passed from one year to the 

next without a ine malt in my left hand. 

I am, of course, right-handed, and the 

contents of that other hand have, over 

the years, varied. They have included — 

in no particular order or timing or importance 

— a silver-plated six-shooter, Mae West, 

Excalibur, a map showing the precise location 

of Shangri-La (the long lost whisky bar outside 

Ocean City, taken by the sea one night in 

1901 after taking delivery of 3,000 bottles of 

100-year-old Highland Park) and the fabled 

ist of the famed arm-wrestler Jimmy Malloy. 

One year a trickster in The Brown Room 

thought it would be the funniest thing to 

replace my malt with a blended whiskey. Note 

the “e”. Why, I’ve killed men over that “e”. and 

not lost a moment of sleep over it Anyhow, as 

I raised my glass to toast 1944 (I was home on 

leave, recovering from an ankle sprain sustained 

after parachuting into The Wol’s Lair to 

assassinate that terrible Adolf chap. We failed, 

but I bagged as brace of his more able commanders 

as consolation) I instantly detected 

The Old Fogey 

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur 

the awful taint of a blend, and hurled the glass 

through the (closed) window, and it took an 

entire bottle of Lagavulin (a youthful but bearable 

20-year-old) to rinse my palate clean of 

the smell. I wasted only a glass on the knuckles 

of my right hand after wreaking vengeance on 

the bright lad who thought to make a fool of me. 

And let me tell you, my view of Cape May, 

seen through that amber liquid, has changed 

hugely, too: it seems but the blink of an eye 

I was reassuring the Lenape natives that we 

would be staying for a few months, just to enjoy 

the air and would be on our way again as soon 

as we replenished some supplies (technically 

speaking this was true: it’s not my fault those 

noble souls didn’t think to ask the exact nature 

of the supplies or I would have explained that 

we were short a few hundred gallons of fresh 

water, a load of cured meat, some fresh vegetables 

and a new country). 

Now, I look around and see the glittering 

skyscrapers under our waterproof dome, and 

wonder... oh, wait, no, damn, there I go, giving 

you what the young people refer to as “spoilers” 

thanks to my Time Machine. I can say no more 

for now, though I advise we immediately cease 

our efforts to contact extraterrestrials. 

So, as we say farewell to this wretched 

year, let me wish all of you (well, all of you save 

three: you know who you are, and I know where 

you live) a splendid start to this brave new one. 

And not to worry about June 13, not at all, you 

hear me? It’s not 100 per cent certain, all right? 

Please don’t let my always-accurate visions 

ruin the year, not at all.

Toss aside your skepticism as we prepare 

to welcome 2021 — we need all 

the good luck we can get. 

Scoff if you like, but studies 

show that people who think they are 

lucky tend to be lucky, or at least feel lucky. 

Gratitude spurs more gratitude, or perceived 

luck. For example, if you are grateful for your 

health, you’re more likely to eat right, exercise, 

and wear your mask. If you feel lucky in your 

friendships, you tend to be a better friend. 

Though it’s hard to believe this year, when so 

many hard-working people are struggling, 

optimism can also help you to succeed in 

work. Whether you’re feeling lucky or not, 

why not mark the new year with an effort to 

bring good luck to everyone? Even if it doesn’t 

work, it’s a nice way to learn about the world 

on your New Year’s holiday. 

Borrow traditions from other seaside 

regions — jump seven waves while facing 

the ocean and wave good-bye to your bad 

luck. Open all the windows for an hour to let 

the old year out — fresh air is also good for 

infection prevention. Picnic respectfully in a 

cemetery, as 19th century Americans did, and 

remember your lost loved ones in an outdoor, 

socially distanced setting. (For a less macabre 

option, consider the winter igloos at Congress 

Hall, where parties of eight can gather for light 

fare and cocktails. Reservations and deposits

information.) Burn sage — it may kill airborne 

bacteria as well as chase away bad vibes. Bake 

bread as they do in Armenia, sprinkle salt as 

they do in Turkey, eat black-eyed peas like 

American southerners — all these food items 

have antibacterial properties, as do grapes, 

which may be why the Spaniards recommend 

eating twelve at the stroke of midnight. In 

Brazil, wearing green underwear is said to 

promote wellbeing, and in the Philippines, 

polka dots are lucky — imagine the power of 

green, polka-dotted underwear! 

If your brown-haired Scottish friend is up 

for irst footing, ask him to carry some toilet 

paper and antibacterial wipes along with the 

traditional shortbread and whisky. Carry an 

empty suitcase around the block in the hopes 

of a year full of travel. Jump off a chair or 

bang pots and pans when the clock strikes 

midnight. Carry your four-leaf clover, rabbit’s 

foot, horseshoe or wishbone. Avoid breaking a 

mirror, walking under a ladder or putting new 

shoes on a table. 

Anything that brings luck is worth a try — 

except the kissing tradition of Venice — so we 

can enjoy a happy and healthy new year!

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

This is the perfect time to start bird 

watching. At midnight on December 

31, the slate is wiped clean and your 

Year List begins anew. No matter how 

many Blue Jays you have seen, the 

first one you encounter on New Year’s Day 

becomes special — a “Year Bird.” Ditto starling, 

House Sparrow, Ring-billed Gull — the 

new year guilds all bird species, common and 

with special significance. 

So, start your year list. Here in Cape May 

over the course of 365 days, and four seasons, 

it is possible to garner over 300 species, a total 

beyond the dreams of birders in Alaska and 

land-locked Oklahoma. Your list begins with 

one entry to kick off your Year List. 

My wife Linda and I used to rise early 

hoping to make that first bird special, a 

screech-owl or Great Horned Owl, both of 

which are vocalizing near dawn in mid-Winter. 

Yes, birds identified by call count just as 

much as birds seen. I was on the American 

Birding Association board of directors when 

the great debate raged — Do heard birds 

count? Many older birders whose Life Lists 

include only birds physically seen, were strict 

interpretationists, holding that bird watching 

should be taken literally. They were afraid that 

just hearing birds and counting them would 

give newer birders an unfair advantage. An 

ear up so to speak. 

I pointed out that a lot of sight-impaired 

birders would think ill of any organization 

that nullified the birds they garnered by their 

vocalizations. In the end, it was decided that 

heard birds could count. 

There is no limit to this list, keeping craze, 

short of your imagination. 

Linda and I keep trip lists. It’s a great way 

to fill up the empty miles. In early December 

we drove from New Jersey to California and 

counted 73 species along mostly I-40. Only 

birds seen from the car were counted and all 

observations were obtained without binoculars. 

But back to your Year List. With little 

effort, you should be able to rack up more than 

30 species on a casual walk around Cape May. 

Bunker Pond should get you at least 9 species 

of waterfowl without much effort. 

Some birders I know keep “Month Lists,” 

keeping tabs of birds accrued in multiple 

Novembers or Julys. It’s a good excuse to go 

birding in the off season, between migrations 

and makes birds like a November Summer 

Tanager or an April Tree Sparrow special. The 

Cape May Bird Observatory has free checklists 

of birds with notes about seasonal abundance. 

Good luck — and keep good records.

We were invited to dinner on New Year’s 

Eve with friends — ones we have been close to 

since the pandemic started. However, the hostess 

called to tell me her son and daughter-inlaw 

will be joining us. I don’t think I can agree 

to go now. I’m a cancer survivor and need to be 

careful. It has put us in a very awkward position. 

I don’t want to hurt their feelings or ruin 

the mini soiree, but I am worried. My husband, 

who is antisocial anyway, said it us up to me — 

what should I do? — Reluctant Guest 

Dear Reluctant 

The Answer Lady’s eyes are rolling in her 

head. You should decline the invitation. Lying 

is sometimes a good fallback to avoid such awkward 

situations. Tell your friend you feel you 

are coming down with something. They will be 

thankful that you bailed on dinner rather than 

feeling resentment for passing judgement on 

their choices. Meanwhile, make a special dinner 

for your antisocial husband, God bless his 

little heart. A bottle of champagne from Sunset 

Liquors. A couple of steaks from Gaiss’ Market 

or a complete take-out dinner for two from the 

Blue Pig or Lucky Bones takeout is just what the 

doctor ordered. 

Dear Answer Lady 

My brother-in-law recently moved in with 

us because he is laid off from his job. The problem 

is he decided to go vegan and I’m a die-hard 

carnivore. My wife struggles every night with 

what to make for dinner and I miss meat. My 

wife says it is rude to cook something he cannot 

eat. I say it is my house and he’s the interloper. 

He is her younger brother and she has always 

enabled his eccentricities. And honestly, I think 

he is doing this to be difficult. What would you 

do, with this little problem? My solution is to 

make a nice prime rib, slap it down on the table 

and gleefully dig in. — Frustrated Carnivore 

Dear Frustrated 

The Answer Lady senses a touch of hostility. 

These are tense times and we must try not 

to fall prey to them. Your wife does not need to 

cook for him every night. Cooking a meal for 

you both a couple times a week is acceptable, 

but not every night. Your brother-in-law needs 

to make other arrangements. George’s has an 

excellent array of vegan/vegetarian dishes. 

And he could learn to cook.

manners along with agility skills and tricks. 

She enjoys running and playing with toys in 

the yard and has excellent leash skills. Marcy

CAMO is a six-year-old pup who came to the 

shelter when his family moved into a home 

with other dogs. He has never been great with 

cats or dogs, but his previous owners said he 

was good with children and could become 

protective of them. Camo has excellent leash 

manners and loves long walks. He would be 

best as the only pet in the house. 

BLAZE is a playful and friendly one-year-old 

pup. He came to the shelter as a stray and has 

quickly grown comfortable. Blaze loves to play 

fetch, run around the yard and is still learning 

basic manners. He seems to be dog selective 

and would need a slow introduction to cats. 

Blaze would be a wonderful companion for an 

active family who will continue his training.
