Under the Spotlight Patients often come into the clinic inquiring about laser dentistry. Dr. Lau sees this as a great conversation opener wherein he can talk about their advance practice giving them a favourable market position. “A lot of patients do come in and ask ‘what is laser dentistry?’. It has made our practice successful and it has denitely made us stand out from the rest,” he stated. Dr. Lau constantly upgrades his materials and equipment in his practice. Moreover, his practice is very aesthetically-driven which means he surrounds himself with pleasing and functional equipment. It is no surprise why Dentsply Sirona has been part of his practice as he appreciates how useful and appealing the company’s products and equipment are. In fact, during IDEM 2018, Dr. Lau purchased two additional chairs to be installed in his main practice – making it a five chair practice. He will be incorporating the Teneo, the top of the line dental chair from Dentsply Sirona, which includes numerous functions (massage, implant, endodontic functions with intraoral cameras and screens). He is looking forward to this new enhancement to his practice and believes that it will be benecial for the patient and for him. In addition, he recently invested in a 3D printer which will further contribute to the ecient and modern workow of his practice. Fully embracing continuing education Aside from frequent upgrades to his materials and equipment, Dr. Lau certainly considers that continuing education is an integral part for all professionals. With the fast pace of technology and change in the eld of medicine and dentistry, he recognises that it is a duty to keep oneself updated. “It is not just sitting down and listening to lectures but it is also speaking to peers, to the industry and learning as much as you can. In my opinion, I nd that the younger generations fully embrace continuing education. Unfortunately, and sadly, some of my older colleagues may not share the same view,” he shared. Though this might be the case, Dr. Lau believes that it is slowly changing. He believes that through the help of the government body, organisations, associations and societies they can provide better continuing education and help everybody to participate even more. He mentioned that it is good to see colleagues wanting to learn further on new advancements 20 DENTAL ASIA MAY / JUNE 2018

He encourages everyone, young and experienced, to embrace continuing education as part of their commitment and responsibility as professionals. “Having said this, even though I’m very much embracing the best in advances in dentistry, a wise person once told me, ‘I don’t care what you do as long as you do it well’ If some of my colleagues still cling to traditional methods, it doesn’t matter. If it works for them and they are providing the best for their patients, it is absolutely alright,” explained Dr. Lau. According to him, traditional doesn’t mean bad or wrong. He’d rather have someone do good traditional dentistry than poor up-to-date dentistry. No matter what method a dentist prefers, the utmost priority is providing excellent care and quality service for patients. Cerec-files community Dr. Lau has been an avid CEREC user since 2004 and also runs the only independent CEREC training course in Australia. With his experience and wanting to help others, he founded Cerec-files. It is a Facebook group that turned into a genuine community wherein like-minded dentists, more forward-thinking and open-minded practitioners communicate to each other about CEREC cases. “We have a good community.
