Checking on Our Musicians!

We need music today more than ever. In stressful times, there is nothing like it, and musicians have not stopped playing.
However, the pandemic has greatly impacted artists. With festivals canceled and gatherings restricted, musicians have
been trying to figure out how to do what they love. They also need to survive. From virtual concerts to front porch
performances, they have been reinventing themselves. Viva Nola Magazine interviewed six New Orleans’ musicians
about some positive outcomes and challenges during this time.
¡Apoyando a los músicos!
Necesitamos música hoy más que nunca. No hay nada como escuchar canciones en tiempos de estrés y
la música no ha parado de sonar. Pero la pandemia ha tenido un gran impacto en estos artistas. No hay
festivales y hay muchas restricciones para las conglomeraciones, lo que los ha forzado a pensar en cómo
hacer lo que aman. Los músicos necesitan sobrevivir. Desde conciertos virtuales hasta en frente de sus casas,
los músicos se han tenido que reinventar. Viva Nola Magazine entrevistó a seis músicos de Nueva Orleans
acerca de lo positivo y retador de su profesión durante este tiempo.

How have you reinvented yourself during
the pandemic?
By deciding to be more prolific as a
songwriter and artist. I have used this time
as the world stands still to write and release
more music.
What are some of the advantages of
virtual concerts?
It is an opportunity to empower musicians
and artists to have sole control and
responsibility for their performance earnings
after decades of complaining and bickering
with venues for fair pay.
What are some of the disadvantages?
The most obvious is not having that up
close and personal interaction that we are
used to having. It has been awkward trying
to represent the vibrations that we would
usually conjure at a live show through a
virtual Livestream. Those vibrations are
the whole point of performing live. It does
not just come from us. It comes from the
audience, too.

hacerlo es lo más importante.
¿Cómo te has tenido que reinventar
durante la pandemia?
Siendo más prolífico como compositor
y artista. Yo he usado este tiempo,
mientras el mundo está en pausa, para
escribir y lanzar más música.
¿Cuáles son algunas ventajas de hacer
conciertos virtuales?
Es una oportunidad de empoderar a
los músicos para que tengan el control
y la responsabilidad única sobre las
ganancias de sus conciertos luego de
décadas de reclamos y discusiones con
los lugares musicales por una justa
paga.
¿Cuáles son algunas de las desventajas
de estos conciertos?
La más obvia es no estar cerca del
público ni tener la interacción a la
que estamos acostumbrados. Es un
poco extraño tratar de representar las
vibraciones que usualmente invocamos
en vivo durante una emisión virtual.
Esas vibraciones hacen parte de un
todo durante un concierto en vivo y
no solamente las creamos nosotros,
también vienen de la audiencia.
