Otemachi Tower is a new multi-purpose complex.
Luminous slits in the high-rise body and cove-lighting
along the building crown create a dignified façade.
In the public walking area, lighting softly illuminates a
reconstructed grove of trees and the interior and
exterior lighting is linked for more unique lighting
effects. Every night at 8pm for 30 minutes, simulated
moonlight falls over this urban forest.

The beauty of the colonial motifs in stucco on the white façade are highlighted carefully by LED lights. LED
deal of importance given to noiseless performance for a perfect acoustic ambience.

Located in prime land parcel, d’leedon is one of the largest residential developments in recent years. The
lighting scheme is closely aligned to the unique architectural language of the project. This challenging
scheme relies on continuous linear lighting profiles and a minimum number of bollards and pole lights were
used to achieve a seamless architectural expression. Only LED lighting fixtures were used for the entire
public area lighting of the project.

This office complex is located in the heart of Singapore’s
research and development facility with surrounding
ambient light levels not as bright as one would find in
a Downtown Area. We sought to minimize the quantity
of lighting fixtures, and yet polish the architectural
finishes with light. The client’s love for art pieces within
the complex helped create an ‘Art Gallery’ environment
where the light focused on Art as the center-stage of
the experience and adequate contrast ratios between
spaces could be created.

This exhibition aims to explore a new horizon of light and lighting design. Its contents will be about Light and
Lighting; and start from Berlin, then to Singapore, Hong Kong and finally to Tokyo.
Our definition of Nightscape is “Scenes with People and Light” and not a literal evening urban scape. We aim to
create a platform to share healthy visions by setting our time clock to the year 2050 to imagine relationships
between “Cities-Light-People”.

Now in the third year of this project, last year we reused the mobile Akari Café kit, designed and put together the
year before, at two events in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Pref.
August:
The first event was held for residents living in the temporary housing blocks. At the local community center, we
held a simple lecture on lighting and then made lanterns that could be used in the housing. The Akari Café was
then used as a place to talk more freely with the residents and for them to experience different types of light.
This 4 part event was even attended by some of the elderly residents.
September:
We held a children’s lantern making event along with the Akari Cinema, an alfresco movie event by Okada Theatre
at the Ishinomori Comic Book Center. The lanterns were made from the same plastic material as the Akari Café
chairs and they were lined up to make a track of light.
We really enjoyed our time with residents of Ishinomaki and hope to go back again next year for another lighting event.

Spacious office for Hong Kong, a New Annex space for Tokyo
Due to expansion of the team three years since opening, our Hong Kong office has shifted to a new space.
Conveniently located in the East of Hong Kong island a minute away from Tai Koo subway station, the generous
space for 11 staff is three times bigger than the previous one, and is certainly spacious enough for conducting
lighting tests. Also, our Tokyo office has open a New Annex Studio space very close to the main office, with 9
designers working there.
Numerous projects received lighting design awards
“Sengukan at Ise jingu Shrine “ in Japan received the award of excellence from the Illuminating Engineering
Institute of Japan, “Intercontinental hotel in Osaka”, “ Park Royal hotel on Pickering” as well as “ Interlace ” in
Singapore received award of merit from Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. We understand that
such award programs have renewed their judging criteria, and we look forward to more and more active design
criticism.
Our traveling exhibition on lighting starts in 2015
To mark LPA’s 25th anniversary, a traveling exhibition titled “Nightscape 2050 - A dialogue between CitiesLight
People in the future ” will commence in Berlin from August 2015. The exhibition is not about showcasing LPA’s work,
it is about sharing visions for relationships between light and human in our future through experiencing different
kind of light, showing nightscapes around the world, interviews with visionaries and workshops with children. The
exhibition will travel to Singapore in November 2015, Hong Kong in January 2016, and finally to Tokyo in May 2016.
New book “LPA 1990-2015 “to be published
Our new monograph, selected 100 projects that LPA have worked on for the last 25 years, will be published around
July 2015. The field of architectural lighting has matured vastly in the last decades with the fast transition into the
current LED dominated industry and evolution of information technology which we think is leading the practice of
lighting design into the second phase. We believe this 400 page LPA book will give us an opportunity to go back to
our roots once again.
Renewal of the lighting detectives’ website
Transnational lighting detectives – TNT Forum continues
After the successful forum held in Taipei in 2013, we had another wonderful TNT forum in Madrid, Spain in October
2014. We enjoyed the workshop with students analysing the current lighting issues and coming up with very
interesting proposals. The next forum will be happening in Mexico City in October 2015. Hope to see you there!

A 3-day workshop and Light Up Ninja event was held on August in Sao Paulo, Brazil. During the city walk we not
only looked for hero and villains of light, but also discussed what kind of nightscape is needed in Sao Paulo since
public safety and other issues are of concern in the city. During Light Up Ninja we illuminated one of the city’s
iconic buildings, Copan, for two hours. This workshop was a great hands-on opportunity to not only exercised
regular night walk, but we also debated and did actual experiments with several viable lighting proposals.

Italy is an irresistible destination to travelers from all
over the world, including the Lighting Detectives. We
toured three big cities, Rome, Milan, and Firenze, and
two smaller cities, Bergamo and Siena, to discover the
nightscape and compare the illumination of historical
buildings and more modern structures. For most of the
historical architecture we visited the light source and color
temperature used depended on the building material
and color, with a slight shift to the use of LED fixtures.
In many churches and museums the effective use of
daylight incorporated into the structures was overwhelming.

The hub of the Middle East, Dubai. It has been 10 years since the
last survey of Dubai in 2003. We divided our survey into 2 parts
based on changes in the nightscape over the last 10 years; lighting
used to decorate the city and lighting of everyday use. However, in
Istanbul, Turkey the transition point between Europe and Asia, the
entire city is a cultural world heritage site. We surveyed the lighting
of this old city as it has developed over the centuries and preserved
its culture.
With the population of 60 million and the 2nd largest country in
South East Asia, Myanmar has not yet been well-known to the world
because of its isolated policy for over a half century. Reforming as
a democratic nation in recent years, Myanmar is now developing
very rapidly and its cities are witnessing fast urban growth. The
survey was made to "unveil" the role of light in three different cities.
For 4 years running, Melbourne has been chosen as the best place
in the world to live. City planning has successfully focused on public
space to build one of the world’s leading and charming cities. The
cityscape is a harmonious balance of old and new buildings. Main
avenues lined with trees and lampposts are beautifully maintained,
along with smaller alleyways, and even the waterfront along the river
flowing through the middle of the city is carefully planned. We
surveyed the Melbourne nightscape in search of the secret to its
coziness.
