The upgraded prefectural library opened at a new site with more shelf-space and storage function that
cannot be measured in just dimensions. The circular amphitheatre-style reading space, symbolizes a
temple of knowledge that is filled with an overwhelming sense of majesty, with the bookshelves and books
themselves serving as the center of the spatial elements. Several cozy reading corners are also spread
throughout the browsing area, with an intimate and enjoyable children's area. The design focuses on a
well-balanced arrangement of ambient and functional lighting that accompanies the unique character of
each space, and is designed to create a cozy nightscape for this scenic area.

To blend into the rich natural environment and the
terraced rice fields surrouning, the lighting design is
very warm and calm. The light seeping through the
woven bamboo; the light glowing through the Japanese
paper, with ears of rice plucked into it; the light blinking
gently like fireflies over the Shichitoui basket; all these
lighting elements were carefully applied to accentuate
the texture of the design elements inspired from
farmers' handcrafts.

The spirit of the Westin brand vision is based on “well-being.” This lighting design embodies the biophilic
design with suggestions of natural light breaking through thick foliage and lighting methods to highlight
greenery. In the reception lobby, lighting seems to sway in a calm breeze, simulated in a large-scale
chandelier. Brightness and shade of color also change to simulate natural lighting in a grove of trees. The
building facade designed like sailboat which embodies Yokohama, as a city that has thrived in trade and
commerce. Inside, the harbor and nature coalesce the interior design, for an elegant and comfortable
lighting environment.

The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong is an oceanfront luxury resort offering relaxing and tranquil
retreat for every kind of traveler. It features abundant dining and entertainment facilities, as well as an
instant connection to the Water Park next door. Lighting atmosphere as a medium that blends the vibrant
South-side lifestyle, indirect light illustrates the detailed texture of traditional rattan and net screen. Accent
spotlight projects enchanting tree forms to ceiling which celebrates nature with guests in the lounge.
Sparkling and twinkling light from the chandeliers just like the falling stars from the sky, adding the final
touch to the gorgeous atmosphere.

The meticulous design took nine years to complete.
The straight-edged architectural space design creates
a gentle gradation of shadows that are enveloped by
the light reflected off the bright interior. The space is
designed with minimal lighting other than decorative
lighting and artwork, providing a comfortable museumlike
atmosphere.

The Singtel Waterfront Theatre is an extension of Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay along the waterfront at
Marina Bay in Singapore. The architectural design concept was conceived to mirror the image of Marina
Bay using a reflective light box facade during the day. We designed a delicate nighttime image by projecting
patterns of light and shadow from the light box onto the building facade, representing the theatre as a place
for freedom of expression and performance for the artist. At dusk, the facade and interior lighting slowly
comes aglow and completes the Marina Bay nightscape with its dynamic lighting effect. People strolling
along the promenade will be surprised by the gentle movement of light and soft glow at various times,
creating moments of delight.

Pu’er tea is a famous variety of tea from Yunnan, an
area surrounded by nature in southwestern China.
This facility is a very valuable commercial space and
is also a beacon for the history and culture of tea. The
lighting design compliments the circular architectural
design with architectural detail that conceals direct
sources of light. Instead of high contrast, lighting
methods concentrate on creating soft, diffused light.

Historically, Tsushima assumed the role as a point-of-communication with the mainland Japan and other
parts of Asia. This period of history is chronicled in an authentic collection of family scrolls that is the main
exhibit in this museum. The core of the display and storage area has a large volume of space reminiscent
of the warehouse design that used to store these original documents. The ceramic tiles covering this core
are a reference to slabs of stone regularly used in Tsushima architecture. Lighting design highlights the
rough texture of the material, creating dramatic experience of the space.

St. Joseph’s Church is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Singapore that has been gazetted as a
national monument since 2005. The church features its neo-Gothic grandeur with carved ornamentation,
tile works and stained glasses. The lighting for the church accentuates the timeless character of the
building as a place of worship and heritage gem with appropriate brightness and contrast. For the
church interior, simple linear uplight and spotlight were chosen instead of the suspended pendant so as
not to distract the focus to the series of small altars, statues, and heritage features. All interior lighting is
connected to the lighting control system and various lighting scenes were created according to the
operation needs of the church.

new landmark in SKYCITY adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport. The three buildings are
designed for wealth management, wellness and medical services, and companies targeting Greater Bay
Area market. To contrast with the dynamic facade design of the commercial block to be completed in the
future, the facade lighting on the office floors is minimal, with only vertical slit lighting accents in a random
arrangement. The entrance is made of stone and bronze-coloured metal. To emphasize the materiality of
the stone gate, we used a low colour temperature to create a sense of dignity and elegance.

Chengdu ICC is a large-scale mixed-use development which is located at Chengdu Metro’s Dongda Road
station. Comprising high-end residences, prime offices, a hotel, and 1.2 million square feet of the shopping
center, it is also surrounded by sophisticated commercial areas. The lighting design concept was inspired
by the layered interior design elements, with a subtle and pleasing "sunlight" spreading throughout the
world. The key point of design direction was using indirect lighting to emphasize the shape of gentle curves
of the ceiling and using a tunable white lighting fixture for the skylight portion to create the day (cool white)
to night (warm white) transition that expresses the changing hours of the day.

Located within the Singapore Night Safari, the new
amphitheatre is replacing the existing amphitheatre
with a bigger capacity of 1000 seats. The architect
designed the main roof using membrane structures.
Aiming to minimize the vertical obstruction, most of
the lighting is integrated with the seating and steps,
providing an indirect lighting effect to the space. A
play of light and shadow with a low illuminance level is
designed for the walkway canopy to enhance the Night
Safari experience while introducing the moonlight
effect on the landscape areas.

LPA 2022 Overview and Prospects for 2023
Our new LPA-China (Shenzhen Office)
We have set up our fourth office, LPA-China, in Shenzhen last June. Under the drawn-out Covid-19, our
primary objective was to carefully provide on-site supervision services for our ongoing projects in China.
We are also ready to take on further capacity for our China projects.
Two experienced designers have been transferred from Tokyo and Hong Kong office to handle work in
China alongside 3 younger designers.
We are excited about how we can contribute to a new lighting culture in China.
Learning from the pandemic
Covid-19 has forced us to tackle new challenges. Online communication has reduced the distance among
the teams and our colleagues around the world. It also taught us once again that face-to-face interaction
is still essential for our creative design work.
In the year of 2023, these lessons will continue to compel us to innovate the way we work.
Many complete and award-winning projects
Numerous projects were completed in 2022 as introduced in this report. Our Hong Kong team has
completed noteworthy projects, and LPA won various lighting design awards.
We will continue to be very diligent this year.
Increase in Lighting Detectives activity (no full-stop)
Although we were forced to cut back on our city night walks and fun drinking sessions afterwards due to
Covid-19, we have gradually resumed our outdoor activities over the last year. The foundation of
Tanteidan (the Detectives) is fieldwork, and in 2023 we are looking forward to regaining such activities.
Long-awaited Sumida River cherry blossom viewing party
It will be the fourth spring since we moved our Tokyo office along the Sumida River in Chuo-ku in February
2020. Our beautiful office is surrounded by cherry blossoms all around, and we can finally plan to
organize Hanami – cherry blossom viewing party.
Please look forward to joining us for the joyous occasion!

The Lighting Detectives hosted a 3-day lighting design
workshop, attended by 23 college students to learn
lighting design know-how directly from lighting design
professionals. Attendees participated in various
lectures, city walks, group discussions, and individual
projects which made for an intensive workshop.

Eight lectures were held, two of which were by guest speakers.Various
types of lighting design for public spaces, urban scale, entertainment,
hotels, etc. were explained with actual projects as examples.

Participants were divided into 4 groups for a 90-minute city walk in the
Ginza and Yurakucho area.Students learned how to measure
illuminance and had discussions on what it means to classify light into
“Heroes” or “Villains” in each area.

Each group analyzed their city walk data and listed the 5 best
and worst heroes and villains of light. Afterwards, proposals
from each area were collated and presented.

Day three was devoted to individual projects. The projects tested
participants' creativity, spontaneity, and expressiveness.

At the end of workshop, participants received a Certificate of
Completion and had a chance to reflect. All participants seemed
very satisfied with this intensive workshop.

Jul.8-9 & Sep.23

Our dreams of doing a Light-up at the local
ubiquitous hawker center were realized this year.
And we managed to do it twice in 3 months with
very strong and positive responses from the
public! The change in atmosphere by simply
adding a table lamp and tablecloth was drastic.
Tables with our set-up were always fully
occupied.
Lantern Making Workshop
Sep.10

The first children's Lantern-making workshop
post pandemic. We were invited by Discover
Tanjong Pagar (DTP) to be part of their
Mid-Autumn celebrations. The theme was to
Upcycle and the kids had fun creating and
inventing from the resources collected by the
team and many interesting forms took shape! We
had a short walk around the park to show-off the
creations as part of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Night Walk Kampong Gelam
Jan.26

We had a walking tour of the Kampong Gelam area in
Bugis. This is a culturally significant area in Singapore for
the Malay community as it comprise the previous Istana
(the Palace for the Sultan of Singapore) and the main
Mosque Masjid Sultan. The pandemic and the nearby
construction site has had a detrimental effect on the area
which sees less foot traffic due to the lack of tourists. It
was great to have an introduction to unassuming districts
that held great historical value and understand how the
current community works together to conserve the
cultural aspects of the area. We had fun and it was nice
to finally have our first walk after the pandemic as an
office.

Night Walk @ West Kowloon Cultural District
Nov.24
Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Lighting Detectives started to have events
since 2016. After long hiatus due to the pandemic, we
finally had one night walk event in the West Kowloon
Cultural District. This area is one of the largest cultural
projects in the world, combining art, education, open
space, retail, restaurants, and entertainment facilities.
The aim of the project was to investigate architectural
and landscape lighting, and its impact on the
neighbourhood. A review session was held after the
walk. Each group shared and discussed interesting
perspectives on architectural and landscape lighting.

Lighting Detectives Survey
Japan
Survey Competition

We thought that it was too early to resume our overseas survey activities, therefore only domestic surveys were restarted
in Japan. We had an in-house competition to determine the survey sites and teams.
Mount Koya Oct.1-3

The Lighting Detectives surveyed the lighting of
Mount Koya, a Japanese Buddhism holy ground in
Wakayama Prefecture. Along with the Okunoin
Temple and other temples, there are also guest
lodgings provided. We stayed in one of the
accommodations and participated in morning
services to fully experience Buddhism and the
lighting environment around it.

Fishing Light Sept.30-Oct.2

Squid is Tsushima’s local specialty and they are
caught by luring them with light. This fishing light
has been ubiquitous in Tsushima's nightscape
throughout time. Lighting Detectives traveled to
Tsushima island to survey this nightscape, a
product of local culture and livelihood, rather than
an elaborate lighting design. At night, many boats
were off shore in the open sea under a night sky full
of stars. We captured the contrasting sea of
shadows and fishing light for our records and also
caught 10 squid.
Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Nov.10-12

Hitoyoshi City in Kumamoto Prefecture was hit hard
in July 2020 by devastating flood waters. In the
midst of rebuilding, we were curious as to the part
lighting will play in the task. We interviewed several
hot spring hotel owners and city officials to examine
and its effects how lighting become a keyword of
reconstruction.
Sawara, Chiba Nov.4-5

About 70 km from Tokyo, Sawara is located along
the Onogawa River, a tributary to Tonegawa River.
We surveyed the nightscape along Onogawa River,
a district designated for townscape planning.
Actually, this is our first survey in Chiba Prefecture.
Water transportation was used extensively
throughout the district, but deteriorated after a
period of rapid growth. The town has been recently
trying to rebuild itself as a tourist destination.

Tokyo
Shibuya Mar.10

The Lighting Detectives surveyed “Miyashita Park
Shibuya Yokocho” and “Nonbei Yokocho” an old and
new version of back-street alleyways lined with drinking
establishments. Located near Shibuya Station
Miyamasuzaka Exit, both alleyways are lined with bars
and restaurants. Patrons and lighting both have an air
of excitement, but a tasteful atmosphere for a very
charming experience.
Minato Mirai, Yokohama
Jun.28

Focusing on two of the Yokohama Minato Mirai districts -
the Central District and the Shinko District - which have
seen a flurry of development over the past few years,
the study investigated the relationship between
landscape guidelines and lighting plans, and the
nightscape of Minato Mirai in response to requests to
save electricity.
Shimokitazawa Oct.21

The Lighting Detectives surveyed the newly completed
redevelopment project of undergrounding railway line in
Shimokitazawa, which started construction in 2013.
Shimokitazawa, which has long been a bustling
subculture area, was left with a chaotic atmosphere, with
the voice of residents opposed to the development being
taken into account. Although lighting in the neighborhood
seems unbalanced, it creates a homely and easy going
atmosphere, very fitting for Shimokitazawa.

Lighting at Water Front
Jun. & Jul.

Since large group city walks were still difficult to arrange, we divided into
small groups to walk 5 different areas. The theme was “Lighting in Old
Port Towns and Waterfronts.” We focused on waterfronts in major cities
of Japan, including Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Osaka.
This was the first city walk since 2019 where we could walk in the same
area together. The theme “Lighting at Cultural Spots” was fitting for our
walk in Shimokitazawa where several notable developments are being
completed one after another in Kanto area, and Kobe in Kansai area.

Tokyo River Cruise
Oct.22

Since Covid restrictions started, this is the first
Children's Workshop held in three years. We
arranged a boat tour, floating from Nihombashi
River to the Kanda River and finally into the
Sumida River for a river’s perspective, instead of a
street view, of the Tokyo nightscape. The view from
the river is not an everyday occurrence and
participants used flashlights to illuminate specific
points and took many pictures.
