Life has a way of bringing out the best in us,
especially when we face adversities. It is upon an
individual to climb up the ladder or fall as life pulls
one through the mud. As they say, when life throws
lemons at you, make lemonade. The birth of Len
Bakeries in Gaborone is the lemonade Goitseone
Lenyatso founded.
What brought you to start Len Bakeries?
We started baking in 2013 after I lost my
firstborn son. My close friend, Mrs Kizika,
brought us a delicious carrot cake. I then asked
her for the recipe to try out baking for family and
friends. And with this, I developed some passion
for baking.
Where did you get the start-up capital?
Len Bakeries is self-funded. But for a start-up,
one needs about a couple of hundreds
or thousands Pulas, because humble
beginnings go a long way. Buying a
few ingredients to bake for a small
party does bring profit to get one
started. Digging funds from one`s
pocket are the push factor for growth.
As the business grows, one can then
consider getting capital from local financiers.
What is the best way for one to make it in a bakery
business?
To start a bakery business, have a passion for baking, it
takes time and commitment to make it. Do not get into
it for money, there are times you may incur loses, but
what will keep you going is the love for baking. Bring
something different to the market, countless people bake,
and make the same thing, do market research and fill the
gaps in the industry. If you like, come up with a brand of
