The latest exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery
features asprawling, intermingling and
colourful ceramics installation called
Chromasill.
The exhibition is by Christchurch artist
Janna VanHasselt, the winner of last year’s
Zonta Ashburton Female ArtAward, and
pushes the boundaries on earthenware
objects.
Some 30 metres of linkedceramic workssit
on ashelf that is just out of the reach of the
viewer.
The worksare setagainst ahandpainted
background of fluorescent pink and grey,
which helps draw you to the snaking rainbow
installation.
Janna Van Hasselt said she worked
intuitively and rather than usesketches, let
the clayguide her.
She was aprint makerbytraining, but
enjoyedworking with ceramics and hadused
200kg of clay on the Chromasill exhibition and
countless glazes.
The workshas been completed over abusy
threemonth period.
She had been influenced by everyday things
in her life, including her two children,
playground equipment, body parts andthe
tensionthatfeatured in everyone’s life.
‘‘I want people to interpret items for
themselves.
‘‘The objects don’t always interact as might
be expected and Ihope that people can
handle all that is going on with the
installation.’’
The workshavebeencompleted by hand
and include the odd brush mark, hand prints
madebythe artist’schildrenand other
imperfections.
JannaVan Hasselt will speak about her
exhibition at an artist talkatthe gallery on
Square joins
civic project
AshburtonDistrict councillorswere at odds
last weekastowhetherthe projectcontrol
groupoverseeingthe Ashburtonlibrary and
civiccentreshould alsohave oversight over
the upgradeofnearbyBaring Square East.
Speakingatlast week’s councilmeeting,
chiefexecutive HamishRiach said the square
upgrade had becomealigned with the new
libraryand civiccentreproject.
Because there was asignificant amount of
coordination and overlap,itwas considered
prudenttoinclude the governance of Baring
Square into the termsofreference of the
projectcontrol group.
He saidthe project control groupwould
continue to report back to counciland would
be wound up when projects were completed.
Councillor Lynette Lovettsaid she waskeen
to keep themomentumofthe projectsgoing
and working in together and believed the
termsofreference should be amended.
Councillors RodgerLetham andLeen
Braam saidthey believed therewas no
problemincombining governance.
Cr AngusMcKay was not so sure and said
the project group would be expandingits
powers.
The boundariesofthe projectswere not
connected,hesaid.
He believedoversightofBaringSquare East
should remain withcouncil.
Cr Carolyn Cameron agreed with him saying
eachproject was aseparate ‘‘deal’’.
The square was not abuilding and the two
should sit under different umbrellas.
Amajority of councillors votedinfavour of
amendingthe termsofreferenceofthe
projectcontrol group toinclude Baring
Square East,with councillors McKay,
