Netball lessons learned
Lessons learnt from acovidaffected
2020 season have led
Mid Canterbury Netball to do
things abit differently this year.
In 2020, Covid19 meant that
the local netballseason was
shorter across the board andit
prompted the question of
whether the netball season
necessarily needed tobethe
traditional 17 weeks long.
Did people enjoy theshorter
season in 2020, and did they
wanttokeep the shorter season?
The question wasasked of the
netball community in an endofseason
survey and as aresult
Mid Canterbury Netball decided
tostick with the 17week season
for its ACL premier competition
for now,but shorten thelength of
the restofits competitions.
The AshburtonNew World
junior competition for year 7
and 8teams on Saturday
mornings, the Saturday
afternoon senior(year 9and
over)competition, andthe
Wednesdaynight social
competitionswill this year only
be 12 weeks.
Year 5and 6teamsand the
Midlands Year 34 Future Ferns
programme, will both run over
term 2, while the year12
programme will runinterm 3as
usual.
Mid Canterbury Netball
centre manager Erin Tasker
said 2020was adifficult year for
sports, but netballers were just
glad to have hadsome sort of a
season in the end.
At the end of this season, Mid
Canterbury Netball will look at
how the differentlengthseasons
for different grades and
competitionsworked in 2021.
With only afew weeks to go
untilthe netball season starts,
clubs around the district are
taking registrations and starting
trials. The Ashburton College
NetballClub wasthe first to start
trialling thisweek, andother
clubs will start trials from March
15.
Premier teams will then get
their first chance to test
themselves on court when the
Inter Centre Whakataetae
tournament is playedin
Ashburtonatthe EA Networks
Centre on April10and 11, before
the local ACL premier
competition starts on April29.
Saturday netball will start on
Tracey Henderson.
navigate life’s difficult moments. Wedothis by
walking alongside our clients and accompanying
them to meetings or finding services in the
communitythatcan help.
Judy will bring many years of experience toher
