Man burned<br />

in caravan fire<br />

Aman is in Christchurch Hospital after<br />

suffering serious burns in acaravan fire at an<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> holiday park.<br />

Fire crews, ambulance staff and police were<br />

called to the Coronation Park HolidayPark, on<br />

EastStreet,onTuesday nightat<strong>11</strong>.01pm.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> fire chief Alan Burgess saidthe<br />

caravan waswell alight whenthey arrived.<br />

Firefighters gave first aid to the burned man<br />

before St John paramedics arrived.<br />

At the heightofthe fire, three appliances<br />

wereinattendance andcrew werethere for an<br />

hourand 15 minutes.<br />

St John sent ahelicopter andone ambulance<br />

and the man was airlifted to Christchurch<br />

Hospitalinaserious condition.<br />

No­one else was injured in the fire and no<br />

other caravanswere in danger.<br />

Fire investigatorsand police were on site<br />

yesterdaylooking intothe cause of the fire, Mr<br />

Burgess said.<br />

The holi festival will return in 2022.<br />

Holi festival off<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>’s Holi,orFestival of Colours,<br />

celebration on <strong>March</strong>20has been<br />

cancelled.<br />

The festival wastohave been held in<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Domain and was set to feature<br />

Indian andother food stallsandan<br />

entertainment line­up that included<br />

dancers, singers and music.<br />

The event is organised through the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>IndianMulticultural<br />

Charitable Trust with support fromthe<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>DistrictCouncil and is familyfocused.<br />

Trustspokesman BikashSukul said<br />

Holi hadbeen all set to go, butthe<br />

decision had been made to cancel it<br />

because of community nervousness<br />

aroundthe current covidenvironment<br />

and large gatherings.<br />

It would return next year, he said.<br />

AnotherHindufestival to look forward<br />

to later this year is the Festival of Lights,<br />

or Diwali.
