Becky and Sean
Dirks, whose son
David has arare
cardiac condition
and in need of afull
heart transplant. He
is on the New
Zealand transplant
waiting list, and the
family could receive
aphone call at any
time to be flown to
Starship Children’s
Hospital in Auckland
for anew heart.
The community, as
away to support the
Dirks, have not only

page to help raise
money for the family,
but as part of that
page members have
come together in a
co­ordinated dance
routine to promote
their cause.

Man burned
in caravan fire
Aman is in Christchurch Hospital after
suffering serious burns in acaravan fire at an
Ashburton holiday park.
Fire crews, ambulance staff and police were
called to the Coronation Park HolidayPark, on
EastStreet,onTuesday nightat11.01pm.
Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess saidthe
caravan waswell alight whenthey arrived.
Firefighters gave first aid to the burned man
before St John paramedics arrived.
At the heightofthe fire, three appliances
wereinattendance andcrew werethere for an
hourand 15 minutes.
St John sent ahelicopter andone ambulance
and the man was airlifted to Christchurch
Hospitalinaserious condition.
No­one else was injured in the fire and no
other caravanswere in danger.
Fire investigatorsand police were on site
yesterdaylooking intothe cause of the fire, Mr
Burgess said.

The holi festival will return in 2022.
Holi festival off
Ashburton’s Holi,orFestival of Colours,
celebration on March20has been
cancelled.
The festival wastohave been held in
Ashburton Domain and was set to feature
Indian andother food stallsandan
entertainment line­up that included
dancers, singers and music.
The event is organised through the
AshburtonIndianMulticultural
Charitable Trust with support fromthe
AshburtonDistrictCouncil and is familyfocused.
Trustspokesman BikashSukul said
Holi hadbeen all set to go, butthe
decision had been made to cancel it
because of community nervousness
aroundthe current covidenvironment
and large gatherings.
It would return next year, he said.
AnotherHindufestival to look forward
to later this year is the Festival of Lights,
or Diwali.
