Foundation Studies Programme
As part of the Foundation Studies programme this year, students in Year 11
areworking on aCommunityServiceproject.
Foundation Studies Programme teacher Liz Carrick said thatthe projectthe
students decided on is to provide afternoon tea for our College Cleaning
Team, three times aterm.
In preparation for this, students plan collaboratively to create avaried
menu. Once they have decided what todothey then have to find recipes
and get anyingredients thatthey will need to make the food.
On the day ofthe afternoon tea, they spend the morning in the Food
and Nutrition rooms making the food. One group is then responsible for
dressing the table and ensuring that everything is ready in time for the
visiting cleaning staff.
Many skills arebuilt along the wayand greatfriendships arealso developed.
The first outcome of this project came to fruition on Thursday 25 February,
where an excellent spread was provided prior to the staff heading out to
clean the school. Each student group met with the staff and explained their
partinthe process.
(Pictured above, left toright): Explaining their part in the process are
DJ Reuben, Zeph Haikaand Grason Rutene, with teacher Liz Carrick.
Around the table, anti-clockwise from back left): Christina Don, Julie Tyson
(obscured), Champa Maharjan, Shirley Kaa, Jack Kaa, Hayley Court and
Marion Ward (Manager).
This group of three boys created asavoury dish for the afternoon tea. Liz
said that they produced some lovely traditional cheese rolls for the staff. A
special mention wasgiven to Grason, asthe other twoboyswerecommitted
to Kapa haka practice inthe middle of the preparation time. This meant
Grason continued to finish the cheese rolls and do all the dishes by himself,
but all three were back together to presenttothe supportstaff.
Congratulations
SecondarySchools’Show-Jumping
120 riders from as far away as the West Coast and Hurunui in North
Canterbury participated in the annual secondary schools’ show
jumping competition held at the National Equestrian Centre, McLean’s
Island,Christchurch.
Equestrian Team Coach/Manager KarenMcKenzie said thatriders choose to
compete at105cm, 95cm or80cm jump heights and must complete two
rounds of show jumping. The goal istofinish with zero faults, and gain
points forthe team.
AshburtonCollege
jumping at 95cm;
HannahThickett on Miss Luna Eclipse jumping at 95cm; Taylah Ward, on
Holmslee’s Pocket Rocket jumping at 105cm.
Results
Charlotte’s pony unfortunately pulled up lame onthe day and had tobe
withdrawn.
Taylah Ward and Holmslee’sPocket Rocket(picturedbelow) then stepped up
to 105cm level, completing both rounds with only one rail down in each
round, whichwas agood outcome.
At this event Hannah Thickett had two dismounts, while Laura Cameron
finished both rounds with anumberoffaults.
Karen advised that the day, for all, was extremely hot and windy which
added to the challenges forriders and horses, particularly in relation to the
swirling dust.
Appreciation
As always, thereisappreciation to the parents who transportedthe students
and ponies to the venue and, aswell,toCharlotteBota forstepping in as a
Ring Gate Stewardfor acouple of hours.
NewZealand Target Shooting Team
Selections for CharlotteMcKenzie
The Target Shooting New Zealand Outdoor Nationals was hosted, from
22-27February, by theCanterburyOutdoor Target ShootingClub (the Club
the shooters belong to) attheir McLean’s Island range, which was built for
the 1974Commonwealth Games
Spokesperson Nina McKenzie said that this event runs for aweek, the
culmination of which is the namingof NewZealandteams from the results,
with competitors’shootingscoresapplied to various internationalmatches.
Charlotte McKenzie wasthe only competitor from Ashburton College this
year, and one of the youngest competitors for the week, inthis her first
outdoornationals.
Results
Results were aggregatedacross the main three days of gradedmatches, and
the prone nationalchampionship match.
Day1:Charlottehad tough blustery, hot nor’west conditionsonher opening
dayand, although not delightedwith her scoreof585.6, it matched up well
with others in the sameconditions, and placed hermid-fieldinher grade.
On Day 2of the graded match, she produced avery strong junior score
of 601.2, with some fabulous shooting and strong concentration over the
courseof75minutes.
Thefinal aggregatedday formed thenationalchampionship.
Conditions were again changedfrom hot and blusterytocool, but with wind
that continued to be challenging. Charlotte managed avery composed
shootand came away with a goodscore of596.5.
South Island Open Team Selection vNorth Island
The above results earned Charlotte arepresentative place inthe South
Island Open team to match the North Island, in the traditional ‘grudge’
match ofthe week. Although there was some excellent scoring from the
South, the North came away with the victory.
National Team Selection
From these matches,Target ShootingNew Zealandwas abletoselect their
nationalteams.
Charlotte was named in the New Zealand Women’s Randle Team, an
international match including multiple countries, such as America, Britain,
and South Africa.
Apparently this further provided some fun, asthe match conditions are
set for 50yards and 100 yards (our matches are shot at 50 metres). It also
specifiedthatitwas to be acoached shoot, with women only. This meanta
practise period the day before onatemporary range at the neighbouring
Deerstalkers’ Range, with time to re-sight the rifles for the appropriate
distance.
Charlotteshot extremely well in the matchthe following morning, and the
resultsare nowsealedand submitted to the international committee.
It is important to note that Charlotte has gained these honours in asenior
age team on her first attempt, which was avery exciting outcome for
Charlotte.
NewZealand Drew Team Selection
Charlottewas further namedinthe above team,
which is an international matchforJuniors from
multiple countries. Inshooting terms Juniors
refer tobeing Under 21. As afifteen year old
Year 11 student Charlotte’s outcomes are very
impressive, and particularly as selection to this
three member team isfrom avery competitive
field. This team was previously captained by
former Ashburton College student Shania
Harrison-Lee.
All international scores and targets are kept by
Target ShootingNew Zealand, with results to be
publishedindue course. Certainly, the organisers
and shooters were relieved to get through the
eventjust in time before COVIDrestrictions were againincreased.
The outdoor season will finish at the end of March, with the South Island
Championships being the remainingmajor event, scheduled fortwo weeks’
time.
Charlotte will then move into the indoor season, with the rest of the
Ashburton College shooters, and they are very much looking forward to
defending their New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Shooting crown and
attempting to go one betteratthe National SecondarySchools’match later
in the year.
