Thanking volunteers in our community
The Methven A&P Show is a
community day out full of fun,
entertainment for people of
all ages.
The show takes place at the
Methven showgrounds on
March 20, and this year will be
celebrating its 106th annual
event; it was cancelled last
year due to covid.
The theme is celebrating
volunteers in our community
and there will be exhibits and
activities from many of the
district’s volunteer force on
show including emergency
services, service clubs and
organisations.
The show will have all the
traditional elements of an
A&P show such as home
industries competitions,
animals on show, shearing,
equestrian events, highland
dancing, trade stalls,
amusement rides and food
galore.
And there will also be top
farming action with three
Young Farmers regional
finals taking place during the
day.
Methven A&P show
president Alistair Stevens, a
crop and stock farmer from
Barrhill, has had along
association with the show
spanning back to his
childhood.
‘‘We never missed it,’’ he
said.
His late father used to show
pigs and then dairy cows and
Mr Stevens and his sister used
to compete on ponies as
youngsters.
He eventually showed
Clydesdale horses, which are
due to return to the show
arena this year, although Mr
Stevens will not be competing.
He has however introduced
other new events such as the
Methven Ute Muster, and the
Wheels and Motors Auction
which have both generated a
Woodchoppers will be in action.
bit of interest.
Mr Stevens has tractors a
1966 Ford 3000 Select
OSpeed and a1985 Ford 4610,
as well as a1981 Ford F350
truck to be included in the
auction.
He was drawn to the idea of
an auction to allow people
with extensive machinery
collections, like himself, to
either reduce their
collections or make room for
more.
‘‘People need to reduce
their collections to buy other
things,’’ he said.
The auction, which starts at
4pm, is being run by the
Methven Vintage Club and is
limited to 100 entries.
But there were already
some rare collectable items
going under the hammer,
including a1908 De Dion
Bouton vintage car, athree
tonne stationary Tangye oil
engine from 1902 as well as big
name brands such as Kecvin,
David Brown and John Deere.
Ute Muster convenor Simon
Wilson said there had already
been agood number of entries
but there was alot of interest
and many would turn up on
the day. There had been at
least two Holden V8 utes
already entered. The judging
trio of Don Smith (mechanic)
and Mark Robinson and
Hamish Gilpin (motor
enthusiasts) will have the task
of rating the utes in their
respective categories on the
day.
It was anovelty event and
open to anybody to enter.
The winners will get
bragging rights in arange of
categories; including best
presented ute, best paint job,
best pre1981 (vintage ute),
dirtiest farmer’s ute and best
modified ute.
There was also at least
$5000 worth of sponsorship
prizes up for grabs. The
prizegiving is at 1.30pm.
