Artistsought forwelcoming town mural<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council, through its<br />

Welcoming Communities programme,<br />

is looking foranartisttocreateastreet<br />

mural in the <strong>Ashburton</strong> town centre,and<br />

anyone wishing tobeconsidered can<br />

now submit their concept designs by<br />

Wednesday 7April.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>'s newest public artwork will<br />

be installed on the back of the Armadillos<br />

building on the corner of Burnett and<br />

Cass Streets and is envisaged to be an<br />

interactive piece that celebrates diversity<br />

and the Mid Canterburylandscape.<br />

The call forartist concept designs follows<br />

submissions made by residents on what<br />

a visual representation of 'welcoming'<br />

would look like tothem. The project's<br />

panel has narrowed those submissions<br />

down to three design themes:<br />

• A depiction of people in diversity<br />

comingtogether as one community<br />

• <strong>Ashburton</strong>'s natural beauty depicted<br />

in warm, bright colours and flowers,<br />

green landscapes and the <strong>Ashburton</strong>/<br />

HakatereRiver<br />

• An interactive art wall enabling people<br />

to participateinand with the mural.<br />

Speakingonbehalfofthepanel,<strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

District Deputy Mayor, Liz McMillan said<br />

they are looking for adesign that can<br />

incorporateany or all of the three themes<br />

before ashortlist of finalists goes to a<br />

public vote.<br />

"This is agreat opportunity to make a<br />

creative statement about our district in a<br />

prominent part of town.<br />

"We're very excited to see what designs<br />

might be put forward and which ones<br />

our community will resonate with when<br />

it comes time to choosing the successful<br />

artwork."<br />

She added that through the Welcoming<br />

Communitiesprogramme,MidCanterbury<br />

was making real progress in helping<br />

newcomerstofeel moreaccepted in their<br />

newhome.<br />

"What better way to celebrate our<br />

community inall of its diversity and to<br />

affirm our commitmenttothe principlesof<br />

the WelcomingCommunities programme<br />

than through apublic piece of art for<br />

everyone to enjoy."<br />

The Council is working with local<br />

employers and organisations to deliver<br />

Welcoming Communities through its<br />

Economic Development activities as a<br />

means of helping to attract and retain<br />

skilled, talented workersinthe district.<br />

Concept designs that showcase one or all<br />

of the design themes can besubmitted<br />

to the panel for consideration at<br />

ashburtondc.govt.nz<br />

The panel, comprising of Tiipene Phillips<br />

(Hakatere Marae), John Magyaya<br />

(<strong>Ashburton</strong>Youth Council), Brian Davidson<br />

(CBD building owner), Shirin Khosraviani<br />

(<strong>Ashburton</strong>Art Gallery)and Deputy Mayor<br />

Liz McMillan will then deliberate on the<br />

designs and announceupto three finalists<br />

inMay.<br />

The designs will go to apublic vote, with<br />

the winning artist revealed in April ready<br />

for the artwork tobegin installation later<br />

that month.<br />

Pipe rehabilitations<br />

starting in Hampstead<br />

Tinwald pool season<br />

extended<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council has this<br />

week begun carrying out its annual<br />

wastewater pipe rehabilitation works<br />

around parts of Hampstead, and<br />

affected residents are being advised<br />

the work may temporarily impact their<br />

services.<br />

Properties south of Wellington Street<br />

on Eton, Cambridge, Oxford and Church<br />

Streets as well as on Beatty Crescent are<br />

being visited by the Council's contractors<br />

to insert structural pipelining inside the<br />

wastewaterpipes.<br />

The work involves the contractorshaving<br />

to access sewer manholes onpeople's<br />

properties, and residents may be asked<br />

to limit discharging wastewater into the<br />

system while the work is carried out.<br />

The rehabilitation programme started on<br />

9<strong>March</strong> and is expected to be completed<br />

by 20 <strong>March</strong>.<br />

Aletteroutlining the project has been sent<br />

toaffectedresidents.Thecontractors,Pipe<br />

Technologies and <strong>Ashburton</strong> Contracting<br />

Ltdwill be liaisingdirectly with residents to<br />

limit any disruptions as muchaspossible.<br />

Council Infrastructure Services Group<br />

Manager,NeilMcCannsaystheprogramme<br />

is anecessary part of maintaining the<br />

infrastructure and ensuring it continues to<br />

workcorrectly.<br />

"We regularly monitor the condition of<br />

our wastewaternetworks and identify any<br />

areasthat require rehabilitation.<br />

"Carrying out this work will help to<br />

increase the longevity of the infrastructure<br />

and protect the servicefromany potential<br />

leaks."<br />

MidCantabrians looking toenjoy afew<br />

extra weeks in an outdoor pool before<br />

thewarm weather ends, areinluck:the<br />

EA Networks Centre has extended the<br />

Tinwald Pool season until 28 <strong>March</strong>.<br />

In previous years, the popular outdoor<br />

pool was open from mid-November<br />

through until the first week of <strong>March</strong>,<br />

however this year the pool will remain<br />

openfor afew extraweeks.<br />

The pool,located in theTinwald Domain<br />

is now open onSaturdays and Sundays<br />

from 12pm until 7pm both days, but<br />

is closed on weekdays due to lower<br />

visitation numbers as school holidays are<br />

over.<br />

Pool admission is$4.00 for adults, $3.00<br />

for children aged 5to 17, and children<br />

under 5are free.<br />
