Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: Lucky Bones — a local favorite on your right when 

heading over the Cape May bridge into town. 

The vibe: It was a great feeling to pull into the parking lot and have 

trouble finding a spot. It was a beautiful, 60-degree day in March, 

so everyone was out taking advantage of the warm weather. Lucky 

Bones’ pick-up window is further back in the lot but easy to find. It’s 

the same set-up they’re thinking about keeping through the summer 

to keep their takeout business bustling. 

The servers: Kaytlin has been a part of the crew for a little over a 

year as a hostess and working the takeout window outside. She told 

us about how great business has been and everyone dining with them 

have been wonderful. Jerome, one of Kaytlin’s favorite co-workers, 

was also out back helping keep up with the phones and getting orders 

to customers there to pick up. Jerome has been at Lucky Bones for 20 

years and has made his way through most front-of-house positions. 

Kaytlin and Jerome were very helpful, and it was fun chatting with 

people who enjoy what they do. 

The food: As usual there was a lengthy debate on where to order 

from. It’s tricky this time of year with so many restaurants still preparing 

to open for the season. With Lucky Bones open for lunch, it 

made our decision a lot easier. Jack opted for the fish and chips — 

yes, he came out of French-fry retirement this week. Kayla chose the 

pulled pork sandwich, while Nicole had the crab and shrimp cake 

sandwich. There were French fries all around and it was a great, filling 

lunch to end the week. 

The takeaway: Lucky Bones has been a year-round staple in town 

since 2006. Their menu offers something for everyone and is accompanied 

by a lengthy cocktail menu and beer list. They are currently 

closed Monday and Tuesday, open for dinner Wednesday and Thursday 

and serving lunch and dinner Friday through Sunday. Takeout is 

available and you can order online at luckybones.com.

The Obermeier family were the latest to benefit from Exit Zero Filling Station’s Feed Our Friends program. They were nominated by friend Leann. Melissa was 

diagnosed with cancer last year and is still undergoing chemo. Scott, Melissa, Leah and Lindsay (pictured with baby Adalyn) enjoyed sticky Thai cauli bites, a hot 

chick sandwich, lobster mac and cheese, butter chicken pot pie, bang bang chicken and shrimp, washed down with mango mules.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

GOOD MORNING! (Oops, sorry. 

I’ll type quieter since I know you’re 

all still hungover from St. Patrick’s 

Day.) Devoted Friends of the Week: 

I met Devon, Toria and baby Warren 

Young at a TNT gig at the Rusty Nail last summer. 

They were young, beautiful and African- 

American, and I was terrified they would hate 

us because Tim and I are the opposite of those 

things. Well, turned out our tastes in music 

aligned and we became instant pals. I even 

follow Toria on Facebook. (Well, I did, but 

more on that later.) I told them at the time 

that I work at a great little Indian-American 

fusion restaurant around the corner, and 

who shows up nine months later to Exit Zero 

Filling Station than the best-looking family 

in whatever town they happen to be in. It was 

lovely to see you again, and I hope to at one 

point devote an entire column to the awesome 

weirdness that was WandaVision. 

Having now spent a fair amount of time 

around multiple Faulkners, I must confess 

I slightly prefer Lisa. Sorry, Jim, but that’s 

the way it goes. But don’t worry, having also 

married above my pay grade, I know precisely 

how you feel. 

Rescinded Apology of the Week: I am 

very un-sorry to Gordon Sterling for whom I 

was previously re-sorry. After working a hellacious 

shift at EZFS we all sat down for our 

shifter. Except me. Because Gordon forgot to 

make it. This was eventually rectified but the 

damage had been done. At least he remembered 

my ultra-secret martini recipe. (Vodka, 

ice, shake, pour.) I must, however, transfer 

said rescinded apology to Katie Dowe, whom 

I poked right in her Covid shoulder. 

I was watching Resident Alien, which guest 

starred Linda Hamilton (Terminator), and my 

son Owen asked if it was Maura Tierney 

(Newsradio, a show for which I have a Squeezelike 

devotion) and, once seen, it cannot be 

unseen. Linda looks like Maura if she’d gone 

into punk rock and meth instead of acting. 

Shout Out of the Week: To LJ, Jimbo, 

TJ, Scooter, Sully and Champ over at Sunset 

Liquors. (I never remember their names, 

hopefully one or two of these is correct.) 

Well, wasn’t I surprised to open last week’s 

issue to the masthead and see “Distribution 

Managers: Terry O’Brien & Melissa 

O’Donnell.” Distribution Managers!??!?!?! 

Plural!!?!?!?! Terry O’Brien AND Melissa 

O’Donnell??!??!??!?! I must protest. Melissa 

does most of the work, it should just be her.

their core sound; I just don’t like 

them.) But this week I caught one 

fantastic song (a cover of Olivia 

Newton-John’s “I Honestly 

Love You” by Juliana Hatfield, 

just wonderful) and one of the 

worst songs I’ve ever heard (the 

spectacularly awful cover of The 

Archies “Sugar, Sugar” by Duke 

Baysee, which combines all the 

worst elements of 80s music and 

reggae into one super-toxic stew) 

which is its own kind of fantastic. 

Friends Again of the Week: 

Chris and Kathy Hein. I made 

a spicy pandemic Facebook post 

about a year ago and the Heins’ 

IRL unfriended me. With good 

reason. They’ve been popping 

up at EZFS and Kathy asked if 

we could be friends again and I 

ACCEPT! You’ve made me the 

happiest man in the world! (But 

seriously, it was dumb, I’m sorry.)

Traffic Paw Patrol of the 

Week: Drove past Sandy 

McCullough and his faithful fleet 

of pups observing traffic bright 

and early Thursday morning. I 

tried to say hello but Sandy was 

in hot pursuit of an 83 Gremlin 

that may not have yielded properly, 

causing a six-car delay at the 

foot of the West Cape May bridge. 

You’re doing god’s work, Sandy. 

Aw Shucks of the Week: As 

I was dropping off a bundle at 

North Beach Gym, a couple of 

cougars hollered how I was just 

in time. They asked if I was world 

famous columnist Terry O’Brien, 

I told them I was and they told 

me they like my column. Did you 

hear that world? THEY LIKE ME! 

So, thank you, Chris and Kathy 

(non-Hein Division). 

Weekly Beard & Weight 

Watch: The beard is slowly resurfacing 

as I have to grow back my 

stache for an upcoming commercial 

shoot that I’m still a little 

leery of talking about lest the 

Actor Gods smite me down. My 

weight dipped to 234.5. Last week 

I reported 235.5, but in actuality 

the scale kept blinking back and 

forth between 235.5 and 236. I 

was hoping for better as I had a 

really good diet week, but I guess 

the McDonald’s I had for lunch 

and the two bags of popcorn I 

had at the movies on my birthday 

was too much to overcome (the 

movie, Chaos Walking, was perfectly 

enjoyable and Tom Holland 

is going to be a gigantic movie 

star if he matures out of his Peter 

Parker tics). 

Lastly this week, I’ve left 

Facebook. In the last few days I 

was accused of being a member of 

the KKK because I’m a registered 

Republican, and warned that the 

mild joke I made on a friend’s 

post “is the kind of thing that 

causes places to lose business, 

just saying.” (That “just saying” is 

just so, so irritating, isn’t it?) 

So, as a non-member of the 

KKK and not wishing to cost my 

employer money so that he can 

continue employing me and the 

other several dozen people who 

rely on him for a paycheck, I figured 

I’d be better off not being a 

member of a community where 

I could willy-nilly be accused of 

such things. 

So, have I been cancelled? I 

don’t know. But I’m not sticking 

around long enough to find out. 

And it’s a shame, because back 

when Facebook was all about 

looking up your old high school 

girlfriends to see who got fat, 

there was lots of fun to be had. 

I may start a page for my 

musical concerns because I still 

want (most of) you to come hear 

me sing because I’m good at it, 

but if I could leave you with one 

little piece of social media advice, 

it would be this; the constant 

virtue signaling of your politics 

appeals to absolutely no one 

who doesn’t already agree with 

you and alienates everyone else. 

Because nobody gives a shit.

Herself is an Amazon Original Irish drama 

starring Clare Dunne as Sandra, a mother of 

two young daughters. She is trying to leave an 

abusive relationship with the girls’ father. Her 

resolve to create a new world for her daughters 

is as strong as the abuse she was suffering. 

When Sandra hears about a government 

program that allows people to build their own 

houses, she is intrigued. The more she learns, 

the more she wants to get involved. The problem 

is, she has no land and no idea about 

how to build a home. She asks her network 

of friends, acquaintances and even strangers. 

This film is about overpowering your 

grief and seemingly insurmountable circumstances 

— sometimes with as little as a hammer 

and a nail. Sandra finds her supplies and 

a group of people able and willing to help. 

The Movie Column

Her soon-to-be ex-husband is not out of the 

picture however, and there is one courtroom 

drama that rings especially true. 

By the end of the movie, everything is 

not wrapped in a bow. Life is too complicated 

for that. But there is hope in the concept of a 

house and the promise of home. 

Let’s take creation of a new reality one 

step further. In WandaVision, the first episodes 

are truly remarkable. They will throw you into 

a world of nostalgic TV that may have you 

scratch your head a little. But even in these 

classic recreations you get a sense that there 

is something greater going on. And it is completely 

intriguing. 

Without needing to provide a spoiler 

alert, suffice it to say that the Avengers superhero, 

Wanda, creates an entire reality out of 

grief over the death of her husband, Vision. 

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their 

roles as the main characters on the series 

streaming on Disney+. 

WandaVision is about a grief so strong 

it shakes an entire town — really the entire 

world. Once you realize Wanda’s sadness and 

how she is trying to hide from her sorrow, you 

see her humanity. This series is far from only 

being about superheroes. They are characters 

in the Marvel Universe, but they are overcoming 

emotions that are deeply universal. 

So, seek out the harder-to-find Irish film 

Herself and consider WandaVision. In the end, 

they are both about how we work through 

sometimes overwhelming odds.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

March is when the Greater 

Yellowlegs flood Bayshore 

marshes — wintering across 

much of the southern US and 

Central and South America. Now 

they are heading to boreal forest muskegs to 

breed. A big rangy shorebird with a slightly 

up-turned bill, they were the bane of market 

gunners who named them the “Tell-tale” 

because of their incessant warning cries. 

Not a flocking species, the birds are easily 

lured in by imitating their call. The smaller 

Lesser Yellowlegs are more social. 30 years 

ago, an observer could see flocks numbering 

in the hundreds flying in echelons over the 

marshes of Thompsons Beach. Today their 

numbers are a vestige of their former abundance, 

reduced by about 70 percent in my 

estimates. While protected in the US and 

Canada, the big meaty birds are fair game in 

the Caribbean and South America. 

To see what shorebird gunning looks 

like, Google Whistling for Plover by Thomas 

Eakins. The fallen birds surrounding the gunner 

are yellowlegs and the sailing ships on the 

horizon assures that the Philadelphia artist’s 

painting was centered on the Bayshore. The 

pucker of the gunner’s lips gives no clue to 

the bird’s identity. Both Black-bellied Plover’s 

plaintive whistle and yellowlegs yelp command 

such a pucker. 

But the gunning of shorebirds in North 

America was outlawed by the International 

Migratory Bird Treaty of 1918 and for most 

of my lifetime, yellowlegs were a common 

Spring migrant. Among these ranks 

of Greater Yellowlegs were Ruff, a Eurasian 

species known for the outlandish breeding 

plumage of males. In the 1970s you might find 

half-a-dozen Ruff on the Bayshore in March 

and April. It was the decline of this bellwether 

species that disclosed to me the decline of 

Greater Yellowlegs, a species whose status is 

listed as stable. 

It’s a complicated web, our environment. 

You pull a string here and something unravels 

over there. A biologist friend of mine 

tells me that when lemming numbers crash, 

Spectacled Eiders don’t breed. So, eiders eat 

lemmings? No, Pomarine Jaegers do and 

when lemming’s crash, jaegers don’t breed, 

depriving eiders of the air cover they need to 

protect eggs and young from foxes. 

Back to yellowlegs, which you can still 

see fair numbers of yellowlegs striding across 

tidal pools. The shallow ponds of South Cape 

May are ideal for this long-legged wader. Still 

the wary birds won’t allow close approach.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, start your sleuthing! 

Amateur detectives will be searching 

for clues on the streets of Cape May 

this weekend, as Sherlock Holmes 

returns to town. 

His latest mystery requires the 

famous consulting detective to deal with children, 

who manage to befuddle him as adults 

can’t. It’s easy to imagine that young Sherlock 

struggled to connect with children even when 

he was one. His relationship with his only 

sibling, brother Mycroft, is challenging. 

Though Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories don’t 

specify the exact nature of his education, it’s 

likely Sherlock would have attended boarding 

school, but there’s no circle of school friends 

in the stories. The text hints that he spent time 

studying science at Cambridge or Oxford but 

left without earning a degree. He builds his 

career with the help of his own experiments. 

It’s hard to see the fictional Sherlock 

thriving in the rigid education system of his 

time, when memorization and regurgitation 

meant more than observation or logic. 

“Learning through exploration” was considered 

too primitive for the future leaders 

of an “advanced” society. 19th-century ideals 

favored suppressing a child’s spirit and 

rewarding obedience — a bored genius who 

thought he was smarter than his tutor might 

not have enjoyed academic success. Tradition 

dominated with little room to explore the 

exciting new scientific discoveries. Members 

of the aristocracy enjoyed special privileges 

that were denied to Sherlock, son of a mere 

squire. Student organizations controlled the 

social scene. He was a dedicated musician 

and a boxer who dominated his weight class, 

but Sherlock struggled to fit in. 

He needs the help of attentive amateurs 

in his latest case, a participatory play called 

Making the Grade. Boarding school students are 

disappearing and when Holmes and his friend 

Dr. John Watson meet an unexpected visitor, 

the “game’s afoot.” Covid-19 restrictions won’t 

stop Sherlock from unmasking the culprit. It’s 

all part of Sherlock Holmes Weekend, a Cape 

May tradition. Search for clues while enjoying 

a weekend in a charming inn. It begins with 

a dessert reception on Friday evening, where 

the crime is explained. On Saturday, search for 

clues on a walking tour and find out the solution 

on Sunday. Full packages begin at $155,
