Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: Taco Caballito Tequileria on the corner of Beach and 

Decatur. The same team behind the former Cabanas brought this taco 

spot to the beachfront last summer. 

The team: It was a full house at the restaurant on a Friday afternoon. 

Mary and Lou were behind the bar with Jason serving tables 

and Debbie keeping things running smooth as the restaurant manager. 

They’ve all been long-time staff members and it’s always great 

to stop in and see this crew. We chatted about how well their first year 

has been and how business just keeps rolling in. They’re now open 

year-round sticking to weekends in the off-season so everyone can 

continue to enjoy their handcrafted margaritas and authentic tacos. 

The food: Kayla and Nicole planned ahead this week and were 

very excited to have some Mexican food — it’s been quite a while since 

we hit this beachfront restaurant. Exit Zero GM Cathrine joined in for 

this week’s lunch run so it was a nice way to conclude the week. Kayla 

enjoyed the Mexican street bowl, Nicole had her usual — carne asada 

tacos and fried avocado tacos — and Cathrine went for the taco salad. 

It was a delicious afternoon and Nicole was lucky to have leftovers for 

dinner later that night. 

The summer plan: Similar to last summer, the street barriers will 

be installed along the sidewalk in front of Taco Caballito to allow for 

more outdoor seating. They will also continue to offer to-go cocktails 

from their walk-up bar window and with takeout orders all summer 

long. As far as indoor dining, they have barriers between tables and 

booths for the safety of all customers and staff. 

The takeaway: Taco Caballito is open 12 to 9 Thursday through 

Saturday and 12 to 8 Sunday and Monday for indoor dining and takeout. 

If you’re craving some delicious tacos and ice-cold margaritas, 

head over to the beach front. If you’re already a fan but want something 

more, Taco Caballito is hiring full-time and part-time positions 

in the front and back of the house for the season.

who told us how Harvey — a retired Cape May postmaster and Navy WWII vet — just returned home after spending two months in a nursing home. Grace couldn’t 

see him during that time due to Covid which made this meal special - they shared it with daughter Janet. Exit Zero staffer Owen O’Brien delivered seafood pot pie, 

Americana burger, pad Thai, peanut butter pie, plus lemonade and iced tea.

things off with something witty 

and pithy, but I’m all out of wit and 

pith this week, so you’ll just have to 

make do with mildly amusing. Or 

something. 

Hello Of the Week: Exit Zero honcho 

Jack Wright and his bride, the lovely Diane 

Stopyra, welcomed baby Oban Ray into the 

world last Friday morning. And, while Oban 

Ray sounds like a name out of a Star Wars 

movie, he seems like a pretty cool baby. I’m 

told he has an outie belly button and his blood 

type is curry. Welcome to Earth, little dude. 

We can never let your dad forget you’re 25 

percent Irish. 

Sort-Of Apology of the Week: Upon seeing 

it in print, my bit last week about Parker 

Smith landing a gig on The Marvelous Mrs. 

Maisel came off a little mean-spirited. To be 

perfectly clear (god, it’s just as annoying when 

I say it as when some useless politician does), 

I am ecstatic for Parker. I know he’s been a 

superfan of that show since he couldn’t shut 

up about it five years ago, and I’m sure it was 

a real thrill. Like if I booked a gig on… any 

show. Parker was a little adrift upon retiring 

from law then being unceremoniously 

dumped from the theater he’d toiled at for 

several decades (believe me, brother, I know 

the feeling. Thrice.), and I’m glad he’s been 

booking a lot of print and film work in this, 

his new second act. And, since I introduced 

him to his agent, I’m hoping he can put a good 

word in for me… 

While breakfasting (?) at Uncle Bill’s in 

North Cape May on Friday (Three Little Pigs 

in a Blanket, delicious, and probably the reason 

my Weight Watch is a disaster this week, 

but more on that later), it occurred to me that 

I did not know the name of the lovely young 

lady who happily collects her bundle of Exit 

Zero from me every Thursday morning. Turns 

out she is Paige LaSerre, and I wanted to be 

friends with her, but she admitted to never 

reading my column, so now we are mortal 

enemies. I feel like I have a lot of those. 

Parking Lot Encounter of the Week: It was 

a real Mexican stand-off (can I still say that?) 

outside Sea Gear early Thursday; I pulled up 

to drop off magazines, another car tried to zip 

in before me. After an extremely tense, oh, 

two seconds, I pulled three spots down, got 

out and made my delivery. It was then I was 

accused of “you were trying to run into me, 

huh?” When I answered this with silence I 

was called a “f***in’ idiot.” Now, I get you are 

a physically disabled person and were there 

to pick up your physically disabled friend, 

which I respect, but such hostility! To answer 

your question — no I was not trying to run

After much consideration and 

soul-searching, I have decided 

not to host a show on WCFA this 

year. I know, I know. You were all 

on pins and needles. And while I 

would dearly love to take a couple 

hours a week to display why my 

taste in music is so much better 

than yours, I simply will not have 

the time to make such a commitment. 

Thank you, Annie Walsh, 

for wining and dining me. I still 

hope to be a sometimes guest 

host and have TNT as a guest on 

your Garage Band show. Inartful 

end of paragraph. 

Speaking of WCFA, some 

old-timey Ella Fitzgerald came 

on, so I flipped over to WXPN, 

who were playing Count Basie, 

then back to WCFA, who were 

playing Louis Armstrong. It was 

Jazzception. 

Reminder to Hugh and 

Ginny Murray, Pete and Lorraine 

Baldwin, and a fifth party who 

may or may not have been Jeff 

Raiczyk (it was pretty dark); 

Exit Zero Filling Station closes 

at 9pm. We can’t have you out 

there galavanting around all 

night. What will the neighbors 

think? (And it was lovely seeing 

all of you, except the maybe-Jeff 

person, who I didn’t really see all 

that clearly.) 

I got a new grill for my birthday 

and after three weeks in the 

box on my front porch and two 

weeks in the box on my back 

porch, I finally got it up and running 

and now I get it, Grill Guys. 

Now I get it. It’s possible I’ve been 

a bit overzealous, grilling all the 

grillable food in my house and 

then eating it, but that’s what it’s 

for! 

I still can’t say much about 

the commercials I filmed last 

week, but I can’t wait to show you 

all my Larry Crinkle bobblehead.

through our doors and ears. 

Next Thursday marks the debut of 

my little trio with Nancy and my 

son Owen on drums playing his 

first ever gig. I’m nervous-excited 

for him. I think he’s going to be 

good, but if he’s not, I’ll have his 

mom fire him.

Anyone who attended a Terry 

O’ke show at Rio Station between 

2005-2019 is no doubt aware of 

the Legend of Bob and Darlene. 

Well, Bob passed away last 

month, and took with him one 

of the more singular voices and 

personalities I’ve ever encountered. 

He was Darlene’s biggest 

cheerleader (probably still is) and 

was passionate about his music. 

Karaoke, for as much as I whine 

about it now, brought a lot of 

interesting people into my life I 

otherwise may never have met, 

Bob was one of them, and for that 

I am thankful. RIP Bob Rogers.

Let’s talk about one best picture nominee 

that you maybe didn’t see. So 

why didn’t you watch Sound of Metal? 

This Amazon original starts at the 

end of one career for heavy metal drummer 

Ruben Stone played by Riz Ahmed — also 

nominated for best actor. Maybe you saw the 

trailer and thought, “I’m not into heavy metal 

music.” 

You may be more surprised by the silence 

in Sound of Metal than the noise. I certainly am 

not a “metalhead.“ For those of you who are 

big fans, I don’t know what to say. Ruben lives 

in an RV with his girlfriend Lou (played by 

Olivia Cooke). They travel the country playing 

concerts on a recently booked tour and things 

are going very well. 

Ruben suddenly loses his hearing. For a 

drummer, that is tragic. He’s told he needs 

to stop playing or he could lose his hearing 

permanently. With his hearing almost completely 

gone, he has no choice but to learn to

to $80,000. They are little devices on the top 

of a person’s head. They bypass the ear canal 

so deaf people can hear voices and sounds 

through the implant. But their expense is too 

much for the young couple. 

What Ruben does is take a long journey 

living in a deaf community where he learns 

sign language and tries to adapt to his new 

reality. I’m not entirely sure why, but he must 

leave Lou behind. The transitions from sound 

to silence and in between are brilliant in this 

film. I’ve always been completely mesmerized 

by sign language — especially people using it 

to passionately argue. 

I wish I was completely mesmerized by 

this film. Although I wasn’t, I didn’t dislike it. 

In fact, I’m glad I watched it. It left me with a 

lot of questions. I’m not sure about parts of 

the premise. But I do know that in the end, 

it saved itself with a turnaround for Ruben, 

one that actually… turns him back around. 

How many times do we search for solutions 

far beyond our means and maybe beyond 

acceptance of what fate wants us to learn? 

In the end, I had to figure out the point of the 

film for myself, but I could see why it got its 

nomination.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Bye, bye winter shorebirds. If you 

are an inveterate beach stroller, you 

have undoubtedly grown accustomed 

to the hordes of pallid sandpipers 

who play tag with the waves. 

These are Sanderling, one of the sandpiper 

species that breed in the Arctic and winter 

along sandy beaches from New England to 

the tip of South America, giving Sanderling 

one of the longest and narrowest longitudinal 

winter ranges among birds. They will leave 

by May for breeding areas in the High Arctic. 

Another winter resident counting down the 

days is the Purple Sandpiper — another High 

Arctic breeder whose winter range extends as 

far north as Greenland, making it one of two 

shorebirds to winter in far northern regions. 

Incomparably hardy, Purple Sandpiper 

forage in the rough and tumble splash zone of 

rocky coasts. You say, we have no rocky coast? 

You are correct, but we do have rock jetties 

and Purple Sandpipers are expansive with 

regards to rocky coasts. Two winter residents 

both adapted to life between the waves, but 

with different feeding techniques. They are 

here for a few more weeks before leaving for 

the Arctic with a narrow window of time allocated 

to Arctic breeders. One clutch, averaging 

four eggs, one chance to avoid marauding 

gulls, Arctic foxes, and hunting birds to move 

their genetic dowery forward. 

You do see Sanderling in summer — they 

have bred, or failed to, arriving first, followed 

by successful breeding adults, then young. 

This staggered migration schedule prevents 

a species from crowding migratory 

stopover areas where young birds will be out 

competed by adults. Unlike songbirds, shorebird 

young can fend for themselves within 

hours of hatching. Only one parent tends to 

young, offering protection but no food which 

is why Sanderling get a jump on migration in 

summer. The early migrants are the parents 

freed of parenting. Male or female? It depends 

on the species. Both adults can incubate eggs 

and brood pre-fledged young. Young cannot 

thermo-regulate. Cold summer temperatures 

are not a factor in New Jersey so beach-nesting 

adult Piping Plovers must shade chicks to 

prevent overheating and lead them to feeding 

areas where the chicks do the rest. 

They may look like poor, frail sandpipers 

but behind these bundles of feathers is an 

amazing back story about the tiny birds that 

continue to beat the odds and move their 

genes forward. Next time you are walking 

any Cape May Beach and come across feeding 

sandpipers, take a minute to marvel.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, take a historical walking tour! 

Spring is a great time to visit Historic 

Cold Spring Village, the living history 

museum three miles north of Cape 

May. The farm buildings are charming, 

and you may see little chicks or 

lambs. The cool weather makes time spent 

with the blacksmith’s fire or potter’s kiln more 

comfortable, and this year, there are Spring 

Walking Tours to lead you to new discoveries. 

There’s always something new to notice 

when you study old things. Antique hunters 

know this, and so do historians. On your 

history tour, perhaps you’ll focus on the octagonal 

building that was once the Taylor Poultry 

House, and consider the fate of octagonal 

houses, a popular alternative building shape 

of the 19th century. Promoted by proto-influencer 

Orson Squire Fowler in his 1848 book 

The Octagon House: A Home For All, octagonal 

houses are efficient — with the same perimeter 

as a square house, you gain 20 percent 

more interior space, reduce heat loss and 

introduce more external light. This efficiency 

led to a minor resurgence in popularity during 

the energy crisis of the 1970s. The shape lends 

itself to an open floor plan, often with a central 

spiral staircase. Octagons are charming, 

calling to mind castle turrets. The shape is 

symbolic of good luck or fulfillment in many 

cultures. The octagon lends itself to spare 

decor, which contrasted with the ornate style 

of other Victorian buildings. There are also 

disadvantages. Interior walls form triangles, 

leading to odd-shaped closets and decorating 

challenges. The panoramic windows reduce 

privacy making it a bit awkward for humans, 

unless the house is on a very large lot. 

HCSV’s Spring Walking Tours will be held 

through June 18. Visit hcsv.org to book your 

ticket. Tours are offered at 11am and begin at 

the Seashore Road gate house. Tickets are $12 

per person, or $10 for children 3-12. Members 

receive a $2 discount. After your tour, treat 

yourself to shopping trip to the Country Store 

for a souvenir. Let the kids pose in the stocks 

or try a 200-year-old game. Enjoy an ice 

cream or visit the Cold Spring Brewery for a 

refreshing beer or sarsaparilla. At the Brewery, 

please note the separate lines for initial orders 

and for refills, keep children with your group, 

and refrain from moving chairs to maintain 

physical distance. Smoking is prohibited. No 

cash is accepted at the brewery — credit cards 

only. Masks are required for all Village visitors 

over two years old, and social distancing is 

required. The public restrooms behind the 

ice cream parlor are open. Please be flexible 

— rules are subject to change without notice.

jersey landscape and environment.
