Selwyn Times Wednesday April 28 2021 8 NEWS Recreational land likely to be reclassified • By Susan Sandys RECREATION RESERVE land at Lincoln is likely to be reclassified to allow the upgrade and expansion of a district council bore and water treatment plant. The reserve is within the Rosemerryn subdivision adjacent to Eastfield Drive. Nearby residents opposed the reclassification when it was first proposed in 2019, forcing the council to focus on a more concentrated design. While six opposing submissions were received to the much larger initial proposal, only one written submission was received in response to the current proposal. The submitter thanked the council for changing the original design and asked to be kept up to date with any plan progression. Councillors will consider at their regular fortnightly meeting today reclassifying about 32 sq m of land, instead of the council’s initial suggestion to reclassify about 183 sq m, as a local purpose (utility) reserve. Part of the block already contains a portion of the pre-existing utility infrastructure encroaching within it. The proposed re-classification will rectify this situation, as well provide space for the upgrade and expansion. • By Susan Sandys EARMUFFS AND loud music helped a Dunsandel building apprentice win the 2021 Canterbury New Zealand Certified Builders Apprentice Challenge. Daniel Michael received the top score overall, out of five apprentices competing at the regional championships this month. The 19-year-old Taylormade Builders Ltd apprentice said he was “pretty happy” to have won the competition, held inside Hamptons ITM hardware store, Waltham. “I had a pair of radio earmuffs on and I had them turned right up,” he said. Songs from The Rock and Radio Hauraki helped him focus on the task at hand, and not be distracted by what the other competitors were doing. The apprentices were given eight hours to build a picnic table that followed specific design plans and met minimum safety standards. They sawed, hammered and assembled against the clock, following a detailed plan as their workmanship was assessed by a panel of experts. As well as winning the title of regional champion, Michael won an ITM prize pack of trade tools. He will now represent Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Music key to competition win Canterbury at the national final in Wellington in June, competing against 18 other regional winners from across New Zealand for the Ken Read Memorial Trophy and $50,000 of prizes. Michael left school at 17 to take up the apprenticeship. He said he wanted to have a trade under his belt before he followed in his family’s footsteps into farming. He said he enjoyed building, and believed it was better than being at university, as many of his friends were. “Because you are learning on the job and you are making money while you are doing it,” Michael said. “It’s good to look back on the day and see what you have built.” NZCB apprentice challenge manager Nick Matthews said the carpentry talent on show at the regional competition reflected a high calibre of apprentices in industry training. “The future of New Zealand’s building industry is dependent on a robust pipeline of tradequalified and well-rounded carpentry professionals,” Matthews said. NZCB supports the Industry Training Association Building apprenticeship scheme, which is delivered by 11 polytechnics across the country.
