<strong>Selwyn</strong> is a district of animal<br />
lovers and owners. When a<br />
pet goes missing, we become<br />
stressed and anxious for their<br />
safety but there are things you<br />
can do to get your pet back<br />
home as soon as possible.<br />
Similarly there are things you<br />
can do to help an animal that<br />
you have found find its way<br />
back home again.<br />
Be prepared; create pet<br />
identity kits for all your<br />
pets<br />
Make sure you have several<br />
photographs of your pet from<br />
different angles. Create a record<br />
of its name, age, breed, sex, neutered or<br />
not, microchip number, any distinguishing<br />
marks, etc. In fact, anything that may help<br />
to identify your pet should it go missing.<br />
Microchip your pet<br />
If you own a cat, dog or rabbit, get<br />
it microchipped. People who find lost<br />
pets are often urged to take them to the<br />
local vet where they can be scanned for a<br />
microchip number, which usually will lead<br />
to the owners’ contact details.<br />

and creating<br />
an identity kit,<br />
the easier it<br />
will be to be<br />
reunited with<br />
your loved one.<br />
Register your dog<br />
All dogs over the age of three months<br />
must be registered with the <strong>Selwyn</strong><br />
District Council. Making sure your dog is<br />
wearing a collar with its registered tag will<br />
help it be reunited with you quickly.<br />
Call your local vet<br />
Call your local vet to check if your pet is<br />
there – it may have been injured or taken<br />
in to be scanned for a microchip.<br />
Check your local pound<br />
If your dog has gone missing,<br />
give your local pound a call or<br />

Create a flyer<br />
Using the info in your<br />
identity kit, create mini lost<br />
pet flyers and drop them into<br />
your neighbours’ letterboxes. If<br />
your cat has gone missing, ask<br />
them to check their sheds and<br />
garages. Provide easy ways for<br />
people to contact you.<br />
Embrace social media and<br />
Trademe<br />
Post information about your lost pet<br />
on your local Facebook pages and check/<br />
create a listing on Trademe. There are<br />
plenty of animal lovers willing to help<br />
reunite your pet with you again.<br />
