MY PRIDE AND JOY<br />
Wheels week is back!<br />
It’s that time of year again when<br />
Ashburton comes to life with its annual<br />
Ashburton Wheels Week held over three<br />
weekends beginning Saturday 1 May until<br />
Sun 16 May.<br />
Spokesperson Ross Butterick says the<br />
committee of five has a great lineup<br />
of activities and displays planned for<br />
this year’s event. Ashburton Wheels<br />
Week has run for the last 25-30<br />
years, originally starting with one week<br />
progressing to a major three-week event.<br />
The event not only supports local<br />
businesses by bringing people into the<br />
town but also helps promote the large<br />
number of clubs and organisations<br />
available too.<br />
This year includes shows and displays<br />
from the local vintage car club, American<br />
hot rods, train museum, motorcycles,<br />
classic cars, aviation museum, classic boats<br />
plus competitions such<br />
as the mountain bike relay, speedway,<br />
wheelchair basketball, 4x4 play day, radio<br />
control drifts, and car sprints to name a<br />
few. Spectator activities include drive-in<br />
cinema, mountain bike river trail ride, go<br />
karting, garden railway, and much more.<br />
The annual street parade will not go<br />
ahead this year due to major roadworks on<br />
the main street of Ashburton.<br />
“We’re disappointed we can’t have a<br />
street parade,” says Ross. “It’s the first<br />
time we haven’t been able to run it but we<br />
look forward to bringing it back next year,”.<br />
Planning for Ashburton Wheels Week<br />
starts as soon as the last one is finished<br />
and is well-supported by grants and local<br />
sponsorship to advertise and promote the<br />
event.<br />
