Busy day of trains<br />

at Plains precinct<br />

The Vintage Railcar Rm50 will<br />

be running at the Plains Vintage<br />

Railway and Historical Museum<br />

this Saturday as part of the<br />

Wheels Week Plus programme.<br />

Along with rides on the railcar<br />

operating every half an hour<br />

throughout the day, there will be<br />

also miniature train rides<br />

available from the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Steam and Model Engineers.<br />

In the grounds of the village<br />

there will be astatic vehicle<br />

display on show as well as a<br />

hand­craft display, vintage<br />

machinery and working<br />

stationary engines operating.<br />

The Plains is home to awide<br />

range of exhibits from<br />

throughout Mid Canterbury<br />

history since European arrival.<br />

It offers insight into a<br />

historical period when the<br />

vintage railway, the pioneer<br />

village and rural sectors all<br />

played an important role in<br />

shaping the district we know<br />

today.<br />

There are three operational<br />

steam locomotives and the<br />

Vulcan Railcar on site, the<br />

pioneer village has its own<br />

church ­and train station ­and in<br />

the rural history section there<br />

are vintage tractors, farm<br />

machinery and traction engines<br />

on show.<br />

The village, the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Fire<br />

Museum and Lynn Woodworking<br />

Museum will also be open for<br />

viewing. The Plains will be open<br />

from 11am to 4pm.<br />
