Homes are neededfor
cute,furry kittens
currently residing at the
MidCanterbury Animal
Although loved and
spoiled by volunteers at
the centre, the kittens and
other very young cats
need permanent homes.
People broughtin
kittensand catsbecause
they didn’t know what to
they were strays.
Big fine after Mt Somers fish death
Theoffending occurredinMarch last
yearafter acompany truck driverfilled
the truck with water fromthe stock water
race.Duringthis process, an agrichemical
escaped from the tank due to the driver
overfilling the tank.The agrichemicalcontaminated
water thenflowed intothe
stockwaterrace.
At sentencingonApril 21,Judge Hassan
orderedHarrisonSpraying Services
Limited to pay $120,000 for the offending.
Thestockwater race, which runs
through Mt Somers village, is partofa
AshburtonDistrict Council.
EnvironmentCanterbury staff foundthe
discharge affectedabout asixkilometre
stretch of the race.
It is estimated that between600 to 1000
fish died, including brown trout, common
bullies, native kokopuand kewai
(freshwatercrayfish). However, staff
believe this number could be higher as
there were parts of therace that they
could not inspect due to accessibility
issues.
Inspections by staff aboutsix months
after the incident found thatthe
discharge was still having an effect with
an absence of fish species downstream of
where the incident occurred.
At this stage, the longtermeffects on
the stockwater race areunknown.
ECanAshburton zone lead Janine
Hollandwelcomed the fine.
“We are satisfied at theoutcome of the
sentencing andhope it serves as a
reminder to all businesses about their
responsibility to protectthe environment.
Ignoringtheseresponsibilities can have
devastatingandfarreachingimpacts on
