Schoolteacher Darlene Norman, who represents
the Port Mouton area, wonders why
someone would contact my organ to relay a
recent conversation she had with District Five
Councillor Mervin Hartlen’s wife Bernadette,
during which Bernadette accused her
of bringing marijuana to a municipal conference
some years back.
A likely faceoff in the next municipal election
pits Darlene against retired surveyor Mervin for
the mayor’s chair, which is currently held by
John Leefe.
The convo in question occurred when Darlene
and some of her fellow councillors were relaxing
in a Sydney hotel room during the annual
Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities convention
in October. As Darlene tells it, Bernadette
reminisced aloud about the time Darlene dropped
her purse on the floor at a long-past Montreal
convention, and Bernadette spotted a stash of
pot inside.
“I said to her, ‘You’re crazy’,” Darlene tells me,

that,” Darlene writes.

I was unable to reach Karen — or anyone at
her office, for that matter — prior to press time;
no one there seems to know how to answer
the phone. Go figure.
That said, I wasn’t able to ask her why, exactly,
she hasn’t been around of late. I’m told
she’s been out of the office for more than a
month.
Don’t worry, though, I’m told she’s fine. In fact,
she and her fourth husband, Supreme Court
Justice Ted Scanlan were spotted on the
steps of the Liberty County Courthouse in
Texas in the past couple of weeks.
Word has it the trip revolved around divorcesettlement
concerns involving Karen’s third exhusband,
Limey oil engineer Gary Willmore,
who’s writing a book about their epic, crossborder
divorce battle.
The lawsuit states that Judy and Mark executed
a retail collateral mortgage on their Grant
Street home off Tower Road as security.
Bank-filed documents located at the Halifax
Law Courts allege Judy, whose licence was
suspended by the N.S. College of Physicians
& Surgeons in April, defaulted on the agreement
on June 1 and by Sept. 30 owed rougly
$317,000.
The bank is now seeking payment in full and
is prepared to initiate foreclosure proceedings
if it doesn’t get it.
