No fishing in upper
half of Tekapo canal
Mid Canterbury anglers will not
be able to fish in the upper half
of the Tekapo canal thiswinter.
Anglerconcern over the
sustainability has led the
Central South IslandFish and
Game Council to put awinter
fishing closure in place on the
upper half of the Tekapo canal
fishery, upstream of State
Highway 8, from now until
August31.
‘‘Overthe lastfour fishing
seasons there has been a
dramatic rise in the use of the
Tekapocanalinthe wintertime
by anglers targetingthe rainbow
trout spawning run,’’ CSI Fish
and Game OfficerRhys Adams
said.
The results of an unpublished
surveyshowedthat the use of
the upperTekapo Canal
increasedbyapproximately 34
per cent during the winterof
2020 when compared to 2019.
The CSI council has taken a
conservationminded approach
towardanglers’ concern that
there is too muchpressureon
the spawning populationand a
diminished fishingexperience
for anglers.
The winterspawning season
closure of the upper partofthe
Tekapocanalwill enable
spawning to occur unaffected by
fishing and allowsthe CSI
counciltocarry out further
research into the sustainability
of the canal fishery and its value
to anglers.
Sports fish populations are
difficult to assess in the canals
due to their depth,poor water
clarity and fluctuating flows.
Canalspecific methods need to
be developed to assess canal
fish stocks.
One of the key priorities for
the CSI council over the coming
years will be to assess if sonar
fish counting technology can be
used to annuallyassess fish
stocksatthe canals.
There are plenty of other
fishing opportunities in the
regioninwinter.
The Tekapo canal,
downstream of State Highway8,
and the Pukaki and Ohau canals
remainopen yearround, as do
several large lakesofthe
Tekapo, Benmore and Waitaki.
abiding by the regulations.
“Quite apart from losing
flooding.
‘‘Where rivershave
breached their banks, vital
winter grazinghas been
destroyed andhas beenleft
caked in mud, silt, rocks and
other debris.
‘‘Nowthatweare in winter,
farmers haven’t ahopeof
EVER HEARDOFLATENCY?
Not many people have. All you really need to know is it’s measured inmilliseconds and it’s important
when it comes to your internet experience. Broadband technologies with high latency can suffer
from delays and the dreaded spinning wheel. Lucky fibre has the lowest latency.
Connect to fibre andneverworryabout what latencymeans again.
