Boil water woes in Methven
Methven townshipmay have escaped
the worst of recent flooding, but
residents havehad ongoing water
issues after aboilwater notice was
issued on May30.
It was still in place morethan a
week later.
Awater tanker was dispatched to
Methven soon after the noticewas
issued and has provided safe,clean
drinking water.
Residentswere toldnot to shower
with mains water for the first four
days and instead were invited to use
showers at EA NetworksCentre in
Ashburton for free.
Aboil water notice was also issued
for the Mt Somers water supply, but
lifted on June 6.
Methven resident and deputy
mayorLiz McMillan said forthe most
part thestormwater drains had done
their job and dealt withthe heavy
and persistent rain.
While areas aroundMethven were
flooded and thetownship cut off for
awhile, it had notbeen too bad.
She saidthe water tankerhad
been sent quicklyand hadprovided
a‘‘watering hole’’ and social
some.
Theemergency response team
had done its job well and had
checkedonvulnerable people.
member DanMcLaughlin said the
timing of the flood was unfortunate
withthe openingofthe Mt Hutt
skifield tomorrow.
Accommodation and hospitality
providers were primed andready
for thewinterinflux of people, but
the boil water noticewas ‘‘not agood
look’’ for Methven.
Thewater coming out the tapswas
notlookinggood, he said.
Methvenwas looking forward to
hosting New Zealanders and visiting
Australiansthis winter andthe
soonerthe boil water notice was
lifted, the better, he said.
homes.
The Sewells were not
affected by flooded river
zones andhad no flood
damageattheir property,
but the Hallensteins had
some work to do on their
beef farm,which backed on
to Taylors Stream. They
had debristoremove,
fences to rebuild and some
regrassing of paddocks.
The winter feed was
okay, Mr Hallenstein said.
Andthey were gratefulthe
stream had returned to its
river channel days afterthe
floodingand considered
themselves ‘‘lucky and had
got out of it okay’’ withthe
flood water confined to
their landand not their
home likeothers in the
district.
The district has
specialist response teams
consistingofMinistryfor
and Rural Support Trust
personnelvisiting farmers
in affectedareas to assess
and provide support.
