truck collided at arural<br />
intersection east of <strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
Threeothers were injured in the<br />

people was travellingon<br />
Cochranes Road andappeared<br />
to have driven through a<br />
controlledintersectionwith<br />
WakanuiRoad and collided with<br />
aheavy truck.<br />
Three peopledied at the<br />
scene,and one later in<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Hospital, all<br />
occupants of the van. The other<br />
two occupants of the van were<br />
alsoinjured, onewas in a<br />
critical condition in hospital<br />
andone in aserious condition.<br />
The truck driver was also<br />
injured.<br />
‘‘The van appears to be a<br />
group of peoplewho have<br />
travelledfrom the North<br />
Island.’’<br />
Police were trying to findout<br />
exactly what happened, Mr<br />
Gaskin said.<br />
‘‘This is an absolutetragedy ...<br />
it appears amoment’s<br />
inattention has caused this<br />
tragedy.Iurge peopletobe<br />

Mr Gaskin saidthe crash had<br />
nothingtodowith flood events<br />
of the past week.Hesaid all the<br />
people in thevan wereadults.<br />
‘‘Anyfatality is ahardship on<br />
the community. <strong>Ashburton</strong> and<br />
Mid Canterbury area has<br />
suffered anumber of these types<br />
of accidents.All Ican really<br />
stress is be very, very careful on<br />
the roads. It is up to all of us to<br />

Residents of <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s aged<br />
care facilities this week began<br />
receiving their covid<br />
vaccinations.<br />
The Canterbury District<br />
Health Board has provided<br />
about 2800 firstdoses across 53<br />
facilities across the total region,<br />
with the health board visiting six<br />
facilities in the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
District.<br />
It is expected that about 5300<br />
people in aged residential care<br />
will be vaccinatedCanterburywide.<br />

response executive leadRalph<br />
La Salle said the CDHB<br />
continued to progress covid<br />
vaccinations in Aged Residential<br />
Care (ARC) facilities across the<br />
region.<br />
‘‘We are commencing ARC<br />
vaccination in <strong>Ashburton</strong> this<br />
week and expecttodeliver<br />
approximately 370 vaccines<br />
across six facilities in the district<br />
over the coming weeks.’’.<br />
OneofNew Zealand’s oldest<br />
citizens received his firstcovid<br />
vaccination at aresthome in<br />
Christchurch last weekatage<br />
<strong>10</strong>8. It was part of the DHB’s<br />
ongoing vaccination rollout.<br />
World War II veteran Bill<br />
Mitchell, who wasfive yearsold<br />
when the flu pandemic swept<br />
New Zealand in 1918,was one of<br />
90 residentsatthe Palm Grove<br />
Rest Home in Christchurch to get<br />
vaccinated.<br />
He was gratefultoreceive his<br />
first dose vaccination. “Is that<br />
all? That was no trouble,” he<br />
said, at the time of his<br />
vaccination.<br />
Mr La Salle said it was<br />
pleasing to seethe vaccination<br />
rolloutprogressing at pace with<br />
alargenumber of agedcare<br />
facilities now reached.<br />
“As we continue to progress<br />
our rollout ahead of plan, we are<br />
delighted to have provided first<br />
dose vaccinations to some of our<br />
most vulnerable people.”<br />
The DHBcontinues to make<br />
plans for rolling out vaccinations<br />
to the widercommunity during<br />
the secondhalf of this year, when<br />
it is planning to deliver around<br />
30,000 vaccinations aweek.
