Floods could impact
dairy season outlook
Severe floodinginCanterbury
poses arisk for thenew dairy
season’s production outlook.
In Westpac’slatest dairy
update, senior agrieconomist
Nathan Pennysaidmany
farmers hadlostwinter feed
duringthefloods and feed
stores were already low given
earlier dry conditions.
Whilethat might not
necessarily impact production
levels fromspring, any
additional adverse weather
events certainly would,Mr
Penny said.
Thenew season officially
began June 1and final
productiondata forthe 202021
season was still to bereleased,
butrecent data suggested the
season had endedonastrong
note.
April production setarecord
highfor April months;
productionwas up 11.6%
compared withApril last year
and was up 2.4% for theseason
to date.
Onthat basis, Mr Penny
expectedproduction to end
about 2.5%higher than 201920
and set arecord high.
Thatresult was even more
impressive giventhe previous
seasonwas also arecordhigh
level and2020 includedanextra
day as it wasaleapyear.
At this stage, thebank
expecteda2% lift in national
productionnextseason as the
verystrongmilk pricewas likely
to drive production higher
‘‘even with complianceand
regulatory constraints actingin
the opposite direction’’,hesaid.
