Artist sketches out big mural<br />

designed to assistwith essential<br />

for localised impacts on roads,<br />
bridges and stopbanks over the past<br />
few days. Theyhave also being doing<br />
rapid impact assessments are<br />
continuing in areas affected by<br />

areas, making home visitsto<br />
residents to establish their immediate<br />

Commissioned mural artist Koryu<br />
Aoshima has made astart on his large<br />
scale work on the backwallofthe<br />
Armadillo’s restaurant building, onthe<br />
corner of Cass andBurnett Streets.<br />
The colourful,interactive mural willbe<br />
worked on by the Geraldinebased artist<br />
over the coming weeks andhehopesto<br />
completeitbythe end of <strong>June</strong>, if the<br />
weatherpermits.<br />
The artist has painted murals<br />
throughout Canterbury and hopes his<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> one will create asocialmedia<br />
buzz.<br />
The mural is designedto foster<br />
welcoming public spaces and has been<br />
fully funded by the Ministry of Business,<br />
Innovation, and Employment.<br />
It is the biggest artwork the artist has<br />
tackled to dateand willcover a26m wide<br />
sectionofwall.<br />
Mr Aoshima said he wouldsketch out his<br />
Muralartist Koryu Aoshima works on<br />
sketching his design on day one of the<br />
month long project.<br />
designbyfreehandand would then fill in<br />
the detailwith colour.<br />
He had 70 different colourstowork with<br />
and was excited to see his project come to<br />
life.<br />

New dog exercise area proposed<br />

Business Estateisproposed in<br />
the<strong>Ashburton</strong>District<br />
Council’s newdog control<br />
bylawand policyout now for<br />
consultation.<br />
Apetitionsigned by 139 dog<br />
walkerslast year asked for an<br />
areainthe business estate to<br />
be designated an exercise<br />
area, but council staffsay it’s<br />
not suitable.<br />
An existing bylaw saysdogs<br />
mustbeleashed in all public<br />
places exceptareasdesignated<br />
dog exerciseareas.<br />
Theproposed new exercise<br />
area is on councilowned land<br />
betweenTaitsRoad and<br />
CompanyRoadright nextto<br />
the businessestate.<br />
Theareaisopenand has<br />
highvisibility, reducing the<br />
potential for incidents.<br />
Staff said the area in the<br />
business estatewas not<br />
suitablebecause of conflicting<br />
activities:itwas usedfor<br />
running, walkingandcycling,<br />
therewere often children<br />
present andvisibility was low.<br />
Anumberofincidentshad<br />
beenreported in thelocation,<br />
including dogs rushing,<br />
cyclists being chased anda<br />
dog attack on ahorse.<br />
The proposed change is part<br />
of ascheduled review of dog<br />
rules thatalsoincludea<br />
proposed extension of the<br />
exercise area in Argyle Park.<br />
Dogs can be offthe lead in<br />
an exercise areaaslongas<br />
theyobey theirowner’s<br />
commandsand arenot a<br />
nuisancetoothers. Dog parks<br />
areexercise areasthat are<br />
fenced.<br />
Dogs wouldbebanned in an<br />
area of Ashton Beach, under<br />
theproposednew rules.<br />
Ashton Beach is home to<br />
many birds and isabreeding<br />
area for thethreatenedblackbilledgull.<br />
Dogs have been<br />
seenattacking birds at the<br />
beach, which is south of the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> River mouth.<br />
Another proposed change is<br />
that dog walkers must carry<br />
plasticbagsorother means to<br />
pick up their dog’s poo.<br />
People can make<br />

from<strong>June</strong>11toJuly 11,with<br />
hearingspotentiallyonJuly<br />
29.<br />
WRITERSCALL<br />
The <strong>Ashburton</strong> Writers Group annual<br />
short story competition is open to<br />
writers of all ages in three agedgroup<br />
sections. There the 11 years and<br />
under (maximum length 400 words),<br />
12 -15 years (500 words) and the<br />
adult section for those aged over 16<br />
(1500 words).Itisonly the second<br />
time the group has held the adult<br />
section,which proved popular last<br />
year, and organisers are hoping for<br />
another great response from writers<br />
in the district. Storiesmust be original<br />
and not previously published, but can<br />
be on any topic. There are excellent<br />
prizes up for grabs. For more<br />
information and how to enter check<br />
out the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Writers Group<br />
Facebook page. The competition<br />
closes on July 9.<br />
