After their trial by flood water,
members of Ashburton
College’s Phoenix Chorus were
musically strongerwhen they
left Dunedin for homelast
week.
Eighteen membersofthe
college’s senior choir, the
Phoenix Chorus, arrived in
Dunedin on May27, with three
teachers and two other adults,
and performed successfully
several timesinthe city.
Singingbegan at the Larnach
Castleballroomand ended at
the Montecillo Veterans Home
andHospital.
However, at theweekend,
choir members became
concerned about the wellbeing
of family members and friends
from theAshburton area after a
rare red alert forflooding was
issued,and astateof
emergency declared.
Because the Ashburton
Bridge andsomekey roads
were closed for much of
Tuesday, college staff
postponedtheir planned
departure by one day.
College juniorschool head
and choir manager Carolyn
Clough said the pupils had
benefited musically andin
otherways from their
experiences.
Manypeople, including
former college pupils in
Dunedin, ralliedto help, one
