Although we have the most advanced
medicines and medical technology
available to humans, we have been
overwhelmed by the Coronavirus. On
a world level death counts are now
above four million and increasing. Artists
have attempted to depict the ravages
of pandemics. The earliest example of
a major pandemics is around 430 B.C.
in Athens. It is estimated that about
two-thirds of the population of Greece
had died from the recorded symptoms
typhoid fever was the probable cause.

Following that pandemic, there have
been at least 10 more pandemics to
date that devastated .major portions of
the geography of the world.

Pandemics historically have been given
titles, including, the Justinian Plague,
Leprosy, The Black Death 1350, The 1492
Columbian Exchange. The Columbian
Exchange was the result of diseases
such as smallpox, measles, and bubonic
plague brought to indigenous people of
the Americas by the Spanish explorers.
A 2019 research project estimated
that 56 million native peoples of the
Americas died of diseases brought by
the Europeans during that era of history.
Beginning in the early 1800s Pandemics
became more prevalent throughout
most of the world. The wide spreading
of diseases is possible because of
increased travel and migration between
countries. The Fiji Measles Pandemic of
1875 was caused by a British Royal party
visiting from Australia going to Fiji during
a measles epidemic. About 40,000 Fijian
people succumb to the disease.
The next major worldwide pandemic
was the Spanish Flu Pandemic of
1918. This is referred to frequently in
comparison to the Covid-19 Pandemic
which we are currently experiencing.
The world death toll of the Spanish Flu
is estimated at over 50 million. Not only
was the Flu Pandemic occurring but
also World War One coming to an end
which was also a primary influence on
the Pandemics’ broad contagion.
During this time period artists, Edward
Munch from Norway and Egon
Schiele from Austria were both directly
dramatically affected by the Spanish
Flu.
Munch created a self-portrait from his
experience with the Flu. Egon Schiele,
an artist whose work has influenced
figure artists for the past hundred years,
was in the process of creating a family
portrait titled “The Family”, showing
himself his wife and soon to be born
child. His wife was afflicted with the Flu
while he was working on the painting.
She died as did the unborn child, just as
he was finishing the painting. He had
completed a drawing of his wife 2 days
prior to her death. Schiele himself was
also afflicted with the Flu and died 2
days after his wife leaving the “Family”
painting as the final painting of his fruitful
and controversial career.

world by the end
of 1958 causing the
death of over 1.1
million worldwide.
An effective
vaccine was rapidly
developed which
quickly controlled
the Pandemic.
HIV was diagnosed as an epidemic in
1981.
It is believed to have come from a
chimpanzee virus in West Africa in the
1920s which spread to Haiti in the 1960s
and into New York and San Francisco in
the 1970s. This scourge of a disease has
been especially devastating on the gay
community with an estimated 35 million
people throughout the world to have
died from it. Several gay artists had
been afflicted by it.
Keith Haring a young gay artist used his
talent at graphic design to expose
the ravaging devastation of HIV and
the hypocrisy that flowed around the
disease. A cure has not been found
but medications that put the disease in
remission have been effective. A cure
is soon to be arrived at estimated by
infective disease specialists who are
finding the development of the Corona
Virus vaccines to be influential in helping
develop a cure for HIV.
The Corona Virus has
the potential to be
the most crushing
Pandemic in history.
At this time we have
not reached the
number of deaths
from the Spanish
Flu Pandemic. We
are in the middle
of recognition of a historical epidemic
of racial repression and, political
tyranny in an attempt to overthrow
a democratic election by a former
president, along with the politicization of
medical science, causing an increase
in infections and deaths from the virus.
Fortunately, a new legitimate election
has been recognized constitutionally
opening the possibility for common
sense and science to direct a path for
eradicating Corona and reestablishing
democracy in our country.
As an eternal optimist agreeing with the
