NSW News Taxi Council advocates FOR TAXI DRIVERS TO BE AUTHORISED WORKERS Following the June 2021 outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in NSW, the NSW Government issued Stay at Home orders. To further curb the spread of COVID-19, the government restricted the movements of people living in some Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Greater Sydney, meaning workers living in these LGAs are not allowed to leave their local government area for work unless they are on the list of Authorised Workers identified by the NSW Government. Taxi, rideshare and hire car drivers were not Authorised Workers. However, the NSW Taxi Council worked with the NSW Government, members of the Opposition and the Point to Point Transport Commission in advocating for Taxi Drivers in NSW to be identified as Authorised Workers in the highly restricted LGAs of Sydney. The NSW Taxi Council welcomed the decision of the NSW Government that identified Taxi Drivers as Authorised Workers for Healthcare and Social Assistance Services in the highly restricted LGAs. Under these restrictions, residents of highly restricted LGAs in NSW were not allowed to leave their LGAs for work, unless they were Authorised Workers (as identified by the NSW Government) who were exempt to leave their LGAs for work. This meant that Taxi, rideshare and hire car drivers as well as staff that work at service providers could not leave these LGAs to work. However, following the advocacy efforts of the NSW Taxi Council, Point to Point Transport Drivers, including Taxi Drivers who lived in the highly restricted LGAs in NSW were permitted to leave their LGA to provide Health care and Social Assistance Services. For example, Department of Veteran Affairs, Healthcare NSW, Family Violence and Sexual Assault Services as well as Booked Transport for Wheelchair Passengers. Drivers were only considered as Authorised Workers while providing the Health Care and Social Assistance Services listed – no additional work could be conducted outside the LGAs, and drivers were also required to carry evidence that the passenger service complies with the list of specified activities outlined in the Authorised Workers notice. Drivers were required to return to their LGA once the service had been provided. 24 August 2021
