Anything mechanical at
Hororata’s annual swap meet
event as it brings people together,
provides trading opportunities and
supports local organisations. People
come from all over New Zealand to
attend this event and spend money, and
the local community benefits from the
proceeds. The swap meet has previously
donated money to several community
groups, including the Hororata School
Swimming Pool, Fire Brigade and St
Johns Church Parish. This year local
organisations, such as the Hororata
Historical Society, Terrace Station
Charitable Trust and the St Johns
Church Parish, will receive support.
The event continues growing in size
and reputation, with the last swap meet
having over 450 people attend with 50
sites. Unfortunately, due to Covid, there
was no swap meet held in 2020. Still, this
year the organisers are hoping for an
exciting day out, rain or shine, providing
an excellent chance for people to buy
and sell mechanically based items. In
addition, the Trust has suggested there
may be an invitation for classic car
owners to display their vehicles.
While you are browsing the assortment
of all-things mechanical, there will also
be the opportunity to take some time out
to purchase food and drinks, including
the famous Hororata Pie.
The upcoming Hororata Mechanical
Swap Meet, being held on September
25, is your chance to buy, sell, or browse
vintage, veteran, classic automotive
parts for cars, motorcycles, off-roaders,
tractors, or anything mechanical
including tools.The event will run from 7
am–2 pm, rain or shine, at the Hororata
Domain and is a cash-only event with
no EFTPOS available. Adults entry is $5
with children under 12 years free.
This unique, solely mechanical swap
meet was started in 2010 by locals John
Foster and Dave Pomare. After meeting
up at various swap meets, John and
Dave, who had a common interest and
passion for mechanical items, decided
to organise their own swap meet. They
had noticed that swap meets had become
more generalised around the country,
with bric-a-brac and household goods
available, rather than focusing on
mechanical items. John reflected, “We
wanted it to be a specific event catering
for more mechanically based things.”
To continue the success of this event,
Dave and John have now joined forces
with the Hororata Community Trust.
The Trust has become involved in
supporting this important community
Sites cost just $15 with no pre-booking required. Please note,
the swap meet will not accept bric-a-brac or household goods.
