SELWYN RURAL LIFE
Stay connected, stay well
When you look after yourself, you’re
looking after your farm too. Farming is a
job with a unique set of challenges – many
are hard to predict or control.
Farmstrong suggests the following ways
to help people feel connected and stay
well.
1. Connect
Research shows that people with
strong social connections are happier,
healthier and live longer. Developing new
friendships and spending time with your
mates makes a big difference to how you
feel about yourself.
2. Give
When you give your time, your words,
your presence to others, not only do they
benefit, but it makes you feel a lot happier
too. There are lots of ways you can give. It
may be spending quality time with your
family, being there for someone who is
having a tough time or offering a hand to
your neighbours.
3. Take notice
We all get busy and our minds get
cluttered. Each day, take a few moments
to pause and think about what you
really appreciate. It might be as simple
as listening to the sound of the birds or
pausing to watch the sunset.
4. Keep learning
At whatever age, learning new things
is good for your brain and keeps your
thinking flexible and open. Being curious
about all sorts of things on and off the
farm, will help keep your mind active and
no doubt farm smarter too. Embrace new
experiences, see opportunities, surprise
yourself.
5. Be active
Keeping active is a great way to feel good.
Working up a sweat releases endorphins
that make you feel alert and better able
to cope with challenges. Make physical
activity a habit, aim for at least 30 minutes
of movement a day. It could be as simple
as leaving the quad at home and walking
to the shed. It can be a game-breaker in
lifting your mood and keeping you in
better shape. Do what you can, enjoy what
you do and shift your mood.
Give linseed a go
Husband and wife team Daryl and Debbie Prebble are the owner/
operators of Bio Oils New Zealand and are based in Ashburton.
Debbie says their family
started Bio Oils back in
1987 and they have been
cold pressing linseed ever
since! They produce both
linseed oil (also known as
flax seed oil) and linseed
cake in various grades,
from high end premium
food grade to stock grade
for animal feeds. “We are
very fortunate to have
loyal customers both
here in New Zealand and
overseas,” says Debbie.
“We are extremely
proud of the quality of
the products we produce
and the reputation we
have. We are known for
producing some of the best flax seed oil
in the world, all New Zealand grown, cold
pressed with the highest omega 3, GMO
free and fully traceable back to the farm –
from Soil to Oil®”
But none of this would be possible
without Bio Oil’s growers. Their ‘family’ of
growers are all located in Canterbury and
include both conventional and organic.
Demand for the company’s products (and
all New Zealand products come to that)
is growing significantly and Debbie says
they are looking to expand their family of
growers.
“We are extremely proud to have close
relationships with our growers, and it is
incredibly important for us to support
our local farmers, their families and
community. It is for this reason that we
do not import seeds from overseas, we
only process seeds grown here in New
Zealand. We support our farmers with
crop management and advice, to ensure
they achieve the best possible yields and
quality crops.”
If you are interested growing linseed for
us this year, Bio Oil would love to hear
from you. “Linseed is a perfect low-cost
break crop, a quiet achiever that looks
pretty!” says Debbie. Give her a call on
