The rapidly growing Selwyn area has four homes which have made the top 100 list. The Selwyn Times featured two of the homes on August 11, when they were named as award winners in their categories for the Canterbury regional House of the Year competition. They were a house at Rolleston built by Greenland Homes, which won the New Home $450,000 to $600,000 category, and a house at Tai Tapu built by Pringle Homes, which won the Volume/ Group Housing New Home $450,000 to $750,000 category. Judges compiling the top 100 finalists delved further into the lists of entrants from each region. In Selwyn, they also selected a home at Greendale built by Craig Rogers Building, in the Carters New Home $1 to $1.5 million category, and a home at Lincoln built by Peter Ray Homes, in the Volume/ Group Housing New Home $450-$750,000 category. Wednesday September 1 2021 Selwyn Times of Year finals Registered Master Builders Association announced the top 100 entrants from this year’s regional competitions, held in July and August, last week. There were more than 345 entries across the 11 regions. They will now be re-judged by the national judging panel to find out who will take out the national awards in November this year. The national awards will recognise the Supreme House of the Year and Supreme Renovation of the Year, alongside 15 award categories, the Pink Batts Craftsmanship Award, two Feature Home Awards, and four Lifestyle Awards including the Outdoor Living Excellence Award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award, APL Sustainable Excellence Award, and Kitchen Excellence Award. Chief executive David Kelly said the awards had been recognising the very best houses, quality builders and craftsmen across New Zealand since 1991. “Each year, we are blown away by the levels of craftsmanship and innovation delivered by Master Builders across the country,” Kelly said. The district council’s community services and facilities group has recommended the district council consider aiming some of its future activities at the older population. This is following the district council’s recent annual customer satisfaction survey. Many of the respondents were in the 65 and above age group, as well as the 55 and above age group. Survey results showed while those aged 65 and above were the highest users of community centres and halls, 83 per cent of respondents said they had not been to any events, 2021 Programmes for seniors in council spotlight Denise KIdd activities or programmes organised by the district council. Group manager community services and facilities Denise Kidd presented the survey to district councillors at their meeting last month. Kidd said respondents were interested in seeing a range of events from the district council in future. These included family activities, roller discos, more school holiday activities and performances from community groups. They also wanted activities such as crafting sessions, Swell Expo, movie nights and dance parties and discos to continue. Kidd said the survey showed the most common reason for people visiting their community centre or hall was to attend an event held by a community organisation which was hiring a room there. “This indicates that the majority of our community spaces are being used as a hub for bringing local communities and clubs together,” Kidd said. The other main reason for attending the facilities was for fitness and exercise programmes. Ways to improve facilities listed by respondents included reducing room hire rates in rural locations, increasing the presence of rural facility staff, upgrading gym equipment at Lincoln Event Centre and more frequently cleaning the Weedons Community Pavilion.
