Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: On the Rocks at the ferry terminal in North Cape May. 

Exit Zero Hospitality took over restaurant operations earlier this 

summer with big plans on the horizon once the season ends. 

The vibe: It was a quiet afternoon following a busy Labor Day 

weekend. The restaurant’s hours recently changed — it’s now open 

every day at noon — so there were a few people enjoying lunch around 

us. It was a gorgeous day to dine outside and thankfully not too hot as 

it’s been the past few weeks. We were seated next to the railing with a 

perfect view of the Delaware Bay. It was wonderful timing as we had 

the opportunity to watch the ferry head our way before arriving at the 

terminal. It was everything you could expect at a waterfront location. 

The server: Jaila was our server, and she was just lovely — and 

was genuinely happy to be working that day. “This is my first serving 

job and I really enjoy interacting with everyone who comes through 

the terminal,” she says. “I just graduated high school, so I’m living 

here year-round and plan to keep working as long as they’ll have me.” 

We chatted about our meals, and she had a lot to say about the menu. 

“I love the guac BLT and the Americana burger, but nothing compares 

to the cauli bites,” she says. “I order them all the time when I’m working 

— they are so good.” And we can attest to that! 

The food: It is already clear we started with the cauli bites, but 

we enjoyed them with the sriracha-honey sauce and fresh pineapple. 

We tried very hard to save room for our meals, but it was very difficult 

to not finish every bite. Kayla enjoyed the Babylon burger and Nicole 

went for the blueberry kale salad. Everything tasted fresh and we had 

to grab boxes to bring it all home — it was all too good to waste. 

The takeaway: The menu has some favorites from Exit Zero Filling 

Station, but it’s the new items that are a must-try. On the Rocks 

is open every day at noon and a great spot to enjoy waterfront dining 

and grab a quick bite before hopping on your ferry.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Been a pretty exciting week here at 

Undertow Central, but more on that 

later. For now, sit back, relax and listen 

to me complain about my week… 

Friends of Exit Zero Filling Station 

and longtime TNT supporters Mike and Eileen 

Dignen, came to EZFS on Saturday night, said 

hello, then… went inside and ate at the bar 

because the wait was shorter. How… dare… 

you. HOW DARE YOU, I SAY! (I 100% would 

have done the same thing, and hopefully you 

caught a few songs through the window. Always 

nice to see you.) 

I knew the weather was perfect when Tim 

(Joyce, one of the Ts in TNT) put on his heaviest 

sweater, indicating it was precisely 72 degrees. 

Around 5:30 Friday, during our first set, I fell 

suddenly ill. You know that wave that crashes 

over you? It was that. So I wasn’t looking real 

good when I went over to check the settings 

on our bass speaker. As I took a knee, both 

Katie Dowe and Damian Contino rushed over. “I 

thought you were having a heart attack!” Katie 

said, followed by, “Huh, I thought I’d be more 

upset.” (I’m not gonna lie, that’s a pretty sick 

burn.) But nope, no heart attack. (Yet.) Just a fat, 

sick, old singer trying to bend over. 

Shortly before that, Ichabod Pornstache 

(Damian) offered to clean the rather impressive 

splat of bird poop from the base of our Bose PA 

system. I said no thanks. I kind of like it. It’s a 

badge of honor. It tells the world, “I’ve seen some 

shit, man. Literally.” 

Thursday night we were forced inside by 

some spotty weather (we were scheduled for 

Ferry Park, but slid across town as the weather 

went south) where we met Julieanne and John 

Bogdon. Julieanne is a long-time reader and 

was very happy to meet me (until after she reads 

this paragraph). She was super-nice if, perhaps, 

a bit over-served (so many hugs…) while John 

was SUPER-patient. (The thrill of meeting Terry 

O’Brien, the agony of reading about it the following 

week.) 

During this gig, my wife Cathrine texted 

asking for some peanut butter pie so, as I sang, 

I flagged down Katie, Damian and Tish Roussos 

to order it. Instead they each brought me a Tito’s 

and club. This feels like an overcorrection to last 

week’s criticism. 

EZFS server Caiti is officially a Debenderfer, 

but she has a lot of Dix in her. (This joke was 

sanctioned and approved by Caiti Dix.) 

Groupies of the Week: Diane and Sue 

Logeman partied like rock stars Tuesday night 

(hey, I remembered something from Tuesday!) 

in one last hurrah of rank debauchery and booty-poppin’ 

before school started. They’ve been 

going out to see Tim since 1979! Damn, Tim. 

You old. (Diane and Sue, however, are still 27, 

like me.)

so I had a loaner for a few days, a 

2021 Corolla, which was very nice, 

except I have trouble getting in 

and out of our Camry because it’s 

so low, and the Corolla was even 

lower than that. So my back and 

hips were killing me from repeatedly 

hoisting my considerable girth 

and… AND… it stormed all morning 

so my shoes were soaked. I was 

just generally miserable. Harumph. 

Anyway, it’s nice our relationship 

has entered this comfortable phase 

where we can just tell each other 

anything. 

Ran into the MVC in North 

Cape May to renew a registration 

and HOO BOY… that place 

is run like a military installation. 

“Stand here, sir. Use this door, sir. 

No, THIS door, sir.” Took me back 

to my four glorious months in the 

US Navy. I mean, I get it, it just 

seemed a little much. Of course, 

Eddie Castegnetta was a total 

sweetheart. 

Was nice to see the Ostara’s 

Coffee crew. EZFS traitor Adehl 

Schwaderer, along with Victoria 

and Anastasia Ostara, danced like 

hippies and chowed on curries. Let 

me know what you guys think of 

Project Hail Mary in your book club. 

I loved it. 

Lastly this week, The Legend 

of Larry Crinkle, Part II. Sometime 

around 2015 I landed a series of 

commercials for Davis Hyundai 

in Ewing, NJ. The character, Larry 

Crinkle, was based on Danny 

Devito’s from Matilda, a fasttalking 

used car salesman. It was 

great fun but disturbing how, with 

just a little make-up and a fake 

mustache, they could make me 

look like Danny Devito. But that’s 

neither here nor there. 

I was told he may be a recurring 

character, but as the months 

and years passed it seemed that Mr 

Crinkle was destined to be a oneoff. 

Until… 

In January, I got an email from 

the producer telling me they were 

reviving Larry for some new spots 

and would I be interested in reprising 

the role? Yada yada yada, in 

April I filmed seven (7!) new spots 

for what is now Davis Honda in 

Burlington, NJ. It was cool to book 

the work, but even cooler to co-star 

with one of my teenage heroes, 

Seth Joyner, from those great Buddy 

Ryan Eagles teams of the 80s. My 

other co-star was the beautiful former 

Miss NJ, Kristen Schoeffler, but 

what’s a former beauty queen next 

to an All-Pro linebacker? 

They were both great to work 

with, really nice people (made 

probably 10x what I got to fly in 

from FL and AZ but I digress) and 

laughed at all my stupid ad-libs. 

Seth is even my Facebook friend! 

(Kristen is only on Instagram and I 

don’t mess around with that.) 

Why tell you this now? 

Because I was under a gag order 

until they started airing, which 

they have. The first premiered last 

Sunday and they will continue to 

roll out every week during Eagles 

pregame between 11a-1p during 

Eagles pregame coverage on Fox 29 

Philadelphia. Plus a few Thursday 

night games. (I KNOW!) 

To answer your next question; 

no, it’s not a national campaign 

like Flo or the “Can you hear me 

now?” guy. I only got paid once. 

But… I’m hoping that these spots 

airing in sports primetime might 

catch someone’s eye and perhaps 

lead to one of those sweet gigs. I’ve 

already started writing my acceptance 

speech for the 2021 Regional 

Mid-Sized Philadelphia Market- 

Based Family-Owned Honda Car 

Dealership Academy Awards. (It’s 

very prestigious, don’t you know.)

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

fifth art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists and 

their work. “By The Water’s Edge” by 

Larry Francis, “SHE” by Elise Bond and 

“Embracing the Light” by Don Merwin will be 

on display September 18 through October 30. 

Francis’s goal is to show the look and feel 

of Cape May with many of his paintings exhibiting 

water as a main feature. Bond finds the 

beauty in the drama of nature and is drawn 

to the elaborate and flashy decorations seen 

in early 20th Century films. Merwin is a selftaught 

artist who finds inspiration in the woods 

and fields, oceans and skies near his home in 

Cape May. 

There will be an Opening Artist Reception 

on Saturday, September 18 from 6-9pm. Art 

lovers are invited to attend and enjoy an evening 

of art and conversation.

I 

had no clue one social media post would 

move me to write this week’s column… 

out of the blue. No clue… except Blue’s 

Clues. The preschooler show ran from 

1996 to 2006. My two daughters were 

five and just an infant when it started. 

The TV network Nickelodeon introduced 

the show as its first preschooler format. It 

quickly became the most popular show on the 

network, and it became the third most popular 

television show for children within a few short 

years. Steve Burns was the first host. 

Steve was live action and talked to viewers 

into the camera. He would urge them to 

help find clues that his animated dog named 

Blue would leave behind. The kids and I really 

enjoyed it. Then, after six years, Steve left the 

show. Just like that. We were watching it one 

day and I said, “Who is this new guy? Where’s 

Steve?” They didn’t know — they were older 

and not watching as much. 

There was something simple and kind 

about Steve. He seemed like he really listened 

as well as talked to the audience. He had

been hosting the show for so long, I naturally 

assumed he would stay — even indefinitely. 

But then one day, he was gone. 

Well, Steve has just resurfaced in a short 

video to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary 

and speak to those who tuned in to the 

beloved children’s show all those years ago. 

It was the most charming message, and I urge 

you to seek it out. If you Google “Steve Burns 

video,” it will come up. 

In the video, Burns is completely in 

character like the host we saw more than 20 

years ago. He’s calm, caring, and respectful of 

your time. Mind you, back then he was being 

respectful of his viewer’s time… they were 

three and four years old. They are in their 20s 

now, and he addresses that. He says now they 

have student loans, jobs and families — and 

“some of it has been kind of hard.” Burns says 

he left the show to go to college. I don’t know 

how my daughters felt about this, but I felt like 

I got closure! 

Watch the Stephen Colbert segment on 

this as well. Very funny. Like Colbert, I was 

moved. The video was so beautiful and sentimental 

that it got me thinking. For a generation, 

Steve Burns was Mr. Rogers. He’s calm, 

engaging, asking for viewers to stretch their 

minds a little — and have some fun. That’s 

Mr. Rogers. And if there is something the 

world needs now more than ever, it’s kindness 

and gentleness and respect for one another. 

Look around a little, and sadly you’ll see those 

clues.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

One thing you can count on when you 

step onto the hawk watch platform 

at Cape May Point State Park is a 

warm welcome from this year’s crop 

of seasonal interpreters. Whether 

you are a veteran hawk watcher or a casual 

visitor, the cordial regard remains the same. 

The veterans, wearing binoculars, 

exchange greetings with fellow hawk watchers 

and take a front row seat under raptor 

filled skies. First time visitors typically go 

all runny inside over the 70-100 Mute Swans 

floating on Bunker Pond. Yes, there are a lot of 

swans and yes, they are impressive animals. 

At 22 pounds they rank among the heaviest 

birds that fly. For comparison, Bald Eagles 

weigh a mere 10 lbs. And many visitors are 

brought to marvel at the apparent indifference 

to swans shown by the hawk watch crowd. 

Cape May’s raptor migration ranks as 

one of the greatest on earth and only occurs 

September through November. The swans 

are here year-round and aren’t even native 

to North America. These European transplants 

were brought here by wealthy landowners 

to enliven their ornamental ponds. 

The birds proliferated and now occur from 

Massachusetts to Virginia and on the Great 

Lakes where they are quietly hated by most 

waterfowl biologist. They are aggressive 

toward other native waterfowl and their long 

necks allow the swans to hog all the aquatic 

vegetation that native ducks and geese also 

need. In places the birds are culled, and their 

eggs addled to keep populations from growing 

as large as the one found in Bunker Pond. 

There are two native swan species in 

North America, the Tundra Swan, which 

arrives in November and breeds in the 

Arctic. Weighing a mere 15 pounds, the Mute 

Swans drive them away. The other swan, the 

Trumpeter Swan, breeds in forest lakes from 

Alaska to the northern Rockies. They have 

also been introduced to the Great Lakes and 

elsewhere. 

I believe in savoring whatever birds Ma 

Nature is serving up. If it’s Mute Swan, fine. If 

it takes an eye-full of swan to nudge a casual 

visitor into the ranks of North America’s 

60 million bird watchers, that’s fine by me. 

Several years ago, I drove my neighbor out 

to see a Bald Eagle nest. Pulling up to the 

impoundments at Dividing Creek, she started 

screaming at the host of Mute Swans beside 

the car — didn’t even looked at the eagles. 

But don’t drive to Cumberland County to see 

swans. Cape May has plenty of swans here, 

right now. Just go to the hawk watch.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, visit the Harriet Tubman Museum! 

The photograph of Harriet Tubman 

in my childhood history textbook 

showed a woman in her sixties, petite 

and frail. A photo discovered in 2019 

shows her as a young woman, looking 

vibrant, but delicate. You’ll meet the warrior 

at the Harriet Tubman Museum in Cape May. 

Tubman seems to have used her unassuming 

appearance to advantage. Born 

into slavery as Araminta “Minty” Ross, she 

dubbed herself “Harriet” and took the name 

of her first husband, John Tubman, in 1844. 

On September 17, 1849, she escaped to the 

North and worked a series of jobs, including 

one in Cape May in 1852. Cape May was 

home to many abolitionists, including businessman 

Stephen Smith, even as slaveowners 

vacationed in town. Tubman may have 

worked with Smith’s abolitionist network as 

she returned to the South to lead others to 

freedom. Tubman began her escapes on long 

winter nights, leaving on Saturdays — fugitive 

slave notices were printed in the Monday 

papers. She hid in plain sight, moving along 

southern streets as if she were an elderly 

slave running errands. On one trip, she led 

nine followers to a boat on a Maryland beach. 

They rowed 16 miles to Cape May. Harriet and 

her companions had to fight off salve catchers 

with oars, and perhaps, with a revolver 

Tubman kept at the ready. They landed safely. 

Tubman rescued about 70 people on 13 expeditions. 

She was nicknamed Moses and slaveowners 

placed a bounty on her head. Tubman 

continued, undaunted, and served as a scout 

for the Union Army. Later, she said, “I was 

conductor of the Underground Railroad for 

eight years, and I can say what most conductors 

can’t — I never ran my train off the track 

and I never lost a passenger.” Harriet Tubman 

lived into her 90s while serving as a nurse for 

the elderly in New York. She died in 1913. 

This courageous woman is the Harriet 

Tubman you meet at the museum, and this 

is the woman portrayed in the nine-foot, 

2400-pound statue “Journey to Freedom” 

by Wesley Wofford, on loan to the museum 

until September 18. The museum also features 

exhibits on Tubman’s legacy, and the vibrant 

African-American community that thrived in 

Cape May until the 20th century. Visit harriettubmanmuseum.org

I ran into an old friend a couple of days ago

My wife punched me in the arm afterwards 

and the friend gave me a “tight smile” ending 

the conversation abruptly. I’ve known her 

since grade school. Her brother was my best 

friend growing up. I say she was the rude one. 

My wife disagrees. I have no idea what I did 

wrong. Is this P.C. climate mean we have to 

parse every word and run it by a sensitivity

home as the only pet in the house. 

COOPER is an energetic boy who loves to

leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper 

lived with children previously, but needs to 

be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained 

which will help with his transition. He 

is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered

STAR is a sweet girl who came to the shelter 

when her owner got sick and could no longer 

care for her. She is a little nervous when meeting 

new people, but quickly becomes friendly 

and social. Star loves to play fetch and thinks 

she is a lap dog despite her 94-pound stature. 

She is learning more behavior cues and will 

make a loving companion to any family.
