PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…

great day was had by all at Reading.
Royals captain Liam Moore kindly gave
me his executive box for the afternoon,
which allowed me to avoid the scramble for
tickets in the week leading up to the game.
The pork carvery was so good I actually missed
QPR’s opening goal. Luckily for me, that was
merely the start of the day’s entertainment.
I never felt we were down and out even when
Reading edged 3-1 ahead through John Swift’s
fine hat-trick.
I exchanged brief messages with Liam on
the Sunday. I interviewed him when he was at
Leicester and a few years ago before a TV game
for Reading. We’ve stayed in touch.
The picture is myself, two family members and my
former Sky colleague Dean Spencer in Box 24.
Regular readers will have recalled that I had
a large framed print of Gary Bannister, Roy
Wegerle and Les Ferdinand hung on my games
room wall this summer.
I had a strange request this week when respected
Manchester United journalist Andy Mitten
contacted me and asked if he could send a picture
of it to a friend of Gary’s brother.
Andy lives in Barcelona and apparently met
this guy at an airport somewhere. I hope Gary
doesn’t think I’m weird in any way.
Anyway, I’m about to depart with Dean down
to Bournemouth. Stefan Johansen hinted after
Reading that this may well be our toughest test
yet. I’ve been given tickets by former Cherries
captain Simon Francis. Hopefully by the time you
read this, we’ll have added another three points
to our tally.
