On an evening of non-stop rain, the R’s forged in front on 13 minutes. Man of the match Gary Micklewhite sent over a cross, and Pompey’s Peter Ellis turned the ball into his own net. On the hour mark, Micklewhite played John Gregory through for a smart finish. And Gregory struck again four minutes later following good work by midfield maestro Tony Currie. Micklewhite produced two more neat strikes in the 84th and 88th minutes to add gloss to QPR’s victory and silence the Pompey Chimes. Hoops boss Terry Venables said afterwards: “With all the rain, there would have been a doubt about staging this fixture in normal circumstances on a grass pitch. As it was, our new Omniturf plastic surface played excellently. “We’ve given Gary Micklewhite the matchball. He’s claiming that the first goal was down to him and that means he got a hat-trick!” In a Daily Mirror match report, Nigel Clarke wrote: “One of the legacies [previous manager] Tommy Docherty left behind at Loftus Road won this second round, first-leg tie for Rangers. “Gary Micklewhite, a free transfer snapped up from Manchester United, scored twice and made two of the goals. “Micklewhite was on his way out of Rangers until Terry Venables arrived, liked what he saw and gave him his first match of the season last week. HOOPS PROGRAMME SNIPPETS: R’s secretary/ programme editor Ron Phillips wrote: “Cup fixtures between ourselves and Portsmouth are rare events - we never seem to get drawn against these particular opponents. “We can, therefore, expect a more interesting game than usual and, as Portsmouth are currently going well in their own division, we can expect a tough fight on our hands - both today and at Fratton Park on 27th October. “Our installation of an artificial playing surface at this stadium now presents us with the opportunity to stage youth matches here before the first team and reserve games for the rest of the season. “Such youth fixtures will normally kick off on Saturday mornings at 11.30am.
