Madlenerhaus
Silvretta-Bielerhöhe
1,986 m above sea level
THE FIRST STEPS
After lunch, warmed and fortified, we went back into the fresh
mountain air and finally onto the touring skis. Lukas explained
and showed us how to get started with the different bindings
and how to use our touring skis. The running function, the correct
securing of the binding for the descent and the adjustment
of the poles.
It soon became clear to the participants that skiing on touring skis
is quite different from skiing on normal skis. Still a little shaky, we
went to the first, easy descent. Between low hillocks and arolla
pines along a small stream into the surrounding terrain. Until the
first uphill stretches when the skins came out. Unpack the skins,
put them on, set the boots to walking mode, change the binding
and off we went. The first steps on touring skis. The loud laughter
and giggling could not be missed and everyone had a good time.
Through the hilly landscape we went towards the dam, past the
ice climbing garden and the first few metres uphill.
After the first few hundred metres, it was time for the “king’s
discipline”: making hairpin bends. The first shaky attempts were
not easy, but after a while everyone finally mastered it. Once at the
dam, we were rewarded with a view of the impressive turquoise
blue Silvretta reservoir. We finished off with a last powdery descent
past a chapel and we all arrived at the Madlenerhaus healthy
and happy, and with a grin on our faces. A wonderful day in the
fresh air came to an end and the participants had their first successful
attempt at ski touring tucked away in their backpacks.
