Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: The NEW Cafe 64 located inside the Cape May ferry 

terminal. It is the latest endeavor of Exit Zero Hospitality since taking 

over the restaurant operations in June. 

The cafe: Cafe 64 is not your average terminal gift shop. Inside 

you will find some of your favorite Exit Zero apparel, a selection of 

new Ferry Park swag, books, glasses and mugs, and a variety of items 

for the kids. The cafe offers hot and cold sandwiches for breakfast 

and lunch, snacks, pastries, milkshakes, specialty coffees and even 

canned beer from our friends at Cape May Brew Co. It’s a great spot to 

grab a bite before you catch the ferry, on an early morning before work, 

or on a pit-stop on a long bike ride. 

The vibe: It was a calm Friday afternoon with some people wandering 

through the terminal before the next ferry. Shoppers browsed 

the retail store and a couple tables in the cafe were taken up by visitors 

enjoying lunch. The tables are next to large windows allowing plenty 

of sunlight, creating a bright and airy space to relax. It was a nice spot 

to enjoy lunch on a rather busy day. 

The food: Kayla and Nicole actually ordered the same sandwich 

for lunch, the turkey and Brie with cranberry mayo. Jack was enjoying 

one for lunch the day before so we couldn’t resist. Nicole enjoyed a 

passion fruit, orange and guava juice which she tried the week before 

and refused to leave without one — it’s just that good. Kayla went for 

the Honest green tea. It was a nice lunch and we managed to chat with 

EZ veteran Cathrine O’Brien for a bit while we were there. 

The takeaway: Cafe 64 is open 6-6 daily and will be one of the few 

spots to eat — the only spot in the early morning hours — at the ferry 

terminal. On the Rocks will still be open for drinks 12-6 daily, but if 

you’r e hungry, head over to the cafe and grab a bite to take with you. 

And for you EZ Hot Chick lovers out there... Cafe 64 offers a Hot Chick 

wrap that does not disappoint.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Speed of lightning, roar of thunder, 

fighting all who rob or plunder, 

Undertow, Undertow, Undertow! 

I wonder if that lady will ever start 

dressing like me for parades. 

Made a couple more trips up the 47-to-55 

corridor, which I hear they’ll soon be naming 

the Terry O’Brien Trail. First was to go see 

my first-born Owen in Glassboro, where he 

attends Rowan University and I only wrote this 

sentence like this to avoid saying Owen and 

Rowan so closely together because there’s only 

so many times you make the I’m-a-poet-anddidn’t-know-it 

joke. Anyway, he was having a 

medical issue (he’s fine, if a little sore in a sensitive 

area) so we hung out at Inspira Health 

for a few hours before hitting the world’s slowest-moving 

McDonald’s drive-thru. Say what 

you will about Mickey D’s, it is the ultimate 

comfort food. 

Then last Sunday, my last-born Henry 

and I went to Philly for the Eagles-Chiefs 

game ( yes, I take 47-to-55-to-42 because I 

don’t like paying $15 in tolls that were only 

supposed to be there until the highways were 

paid for but in the wise words of Owen O’Brien 

everything is a scam so let’s not go down that 

rabbit hole). Thanks again to Rob Rosenfeld 

for the hook-up. The seats were amazing (row 

29, 40-yard-line) and the game was a lot of 

fun (72 points and no punts!). And Henry 

survived the experience despite wearing his 

Chiefs Tyreke Hill jersey (and got to see his 

favorite player score three touchdowns). I prepared 

for the day by cashing a couple of my 

band checks so I walked into the stadium with 

$600 in my pocket ready to buy lots of merch 

and cheesesteaks… only to find out they were 

only taking plastic. Oh well. At least I got to 

know what it feels like to walk around with 

$600 in your pocket. 

I also saw about a dozen Cape Mayans at 

the game who neither drunkenly started any 

fights nor launched snot rockets as a depressingly 

large number of fans did, so well done, 

gang! Way to represent! 

Memo to Olivia Matthews, host extraordinaire 

at Exit Zero Filling Station: I was saying, 

“I adore you!” Not yelling, “DOOR!” as I 

carried my PA gear while you stood by the door 

like a spoiled, pampered rock star would do. 

Not at all. Only a real jerk would do that. 

Please, Rickey Phillips and Caiti Dix 

(EZFS servers), please stop fighting! It breaks 

my heart! It doesn’t matter who sits where, 

Rickey throws enough shade for everyone to 

sit under. 

I know I watched The Many Saints of Newark, 

The Sopranos prequel, but for the life of me I 

couldn’t tell you anything about it.

After rehearsal for The Mostly 

Dead last Wednesday (a show

enjoyed) I went for a drink with 

my homie Kevin Ebner and ran 

into the 3 West Cabal (Barry 

Tischler, Gregg Carpenter, Ed 

McDonough). Drinks were 

bought, tales were swapped, and 

jokes were told, none of which 

were suitable for print in this family-friendly 

magazine, but suffice 

to say they would have made Dave 

Chapelle blush (his new special 

is great). I don’t often get to hang 

out and shoot the breeze in a bar. I 

usually do my drinking by myself. 

In the dark. In a corner. 

I dropped Charlee (our 

Rottweiler/Shar-Pei) off at Muddy 

Paws, a fantastic dog grooming 

joint in N. Cape May which is 

staffed with super-friendly people 

who love dogs, and grabbed lunch 

at El Pueblo Taqueria next door. I 

couldn’t decide between the quesadilla 

and the chimichanga so 

I ordered both… and spent the 

next two days finishing them. So 

thank you, Ruben Nunez, it was 

awesome. I should also comment 

on the El Pueblo restroom, 

which was clean, comfy and cozy 

thanks to the muted, earthy color 

scheme, a stark contrast to his 

brother Jehovanny’s at Antojos, 

which is plastered with Marvel 

stickers. Both have their charms. 

Cape May Brewing Co. 

founder Ryan Krill ventured in 

as I chowed down. Seems impossible 

that little Radley is twoand-a-half 

already. He tells me 

there are big expansion plans 

for CMBC in the coming years, 

including an amusement park and 

space exploration program and 

the world’s first orbiting brewery 

and okay none of those is true but 

wouldn’t they be cool?

I have Comedy Central on as 

I write this week and I have two 

observations — Andy Bernard is 

by far the worst character on The 

Office and Trevor Noah is painfully 

unfunny. 

Took my middle-born son 

Jackson to the bank the other day 

and made the mistake of looking 

at his receipt because that little 

jerk has, literally, 12x more money 

than I do. But he does buy me 

Starbuck’s every time I take him 

to dance, so there’s that. 

For years I tried to be that guy, 

the good guy, the democratic guy, 

the guy who waited patiently at 

the end of the drive-thru line for 

the cars to advance in the order 

in which they arrived, even if the 

second lane wasn’t being used. 

Well, no longer. If you’re in line 

at the drive-thru and are dumb 

enough to be a sucker like I was 

for years and being all diplomatic 

and stuff, I am going to pull right 

around you into that empty lasne 

while you fume to the heavens 

how unfair it is like I used to. 

I finished my first watch 

through (there will be more) of 

Friday Night Lights and I’m not sure 

it’s safe for a man my age to ugly 

cry so much. 

Book of the Week: Project 

Hail Mary by Andy Weir (The 

Martian). As with all of Weir’s 

output it’s pretty science-y and 

my eyes glazed over at some of the 

math and physics sections (I am 

not a smart man) but the story is 

inventive and surprising and very 

human. I want to join Ostara’s 

Coffee House book club just to 

read it again.

Beating the living daylights out of 

rude people — it’s very hard not to 

appreciate the premise behind the 

Amazon movie Jolt. Oh, come on. 

Don’t be so holier than thou. Don’t 

tell me that you’ve never wanted to smack the 

snot out of some prickly jerk who’s mouthing 

off at an innocent cashier. 

So, wait… am I the only one with anger 

issues toward ignorant people? Well… I’m 

working on it, okay? And I’m not the only 

one. Kate Beckinsale is Lindy, a woman who 

has a neurological disorder that puts her in 

a spontaneous rage with adrenaline rushes 

that give her super strength. This is especially 

true when she comes across people who are 

asshats — can I say that here? How about 

plain mean? 

Stanley Tucci plays Lindy’s therapist, and 

he has outfitted her with a device that shocks 

her entire system whenever she’s about to 

thrash someone. Literally, the gizmo shocks 

her with volts of electricity, so she doesn’t go 

into a rage. 

The Movie Column 

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

The movie opens with Lindy going on a 

blind date with Justin (Jai Courtney). She is 

planning to cancel the date before it begins, 

but he convinces her to stay. Let’s say that the 

server is a complete jerk. The gizmo fails. It 

gets ugly, and the date is over. 

Justin is persistent. He takes her on a second 

date, and there is an instant connection. 

The two have a wonderful time, and it appears 

that Lindy is falling in love. The very next day, 

Justin is found brutally murdered. 

Lindy jumps into action and trying to find 

Justin’s murder. The plot has a few interesting 

turns, but honestly this is strictly a summefun 

flick. The ending isn’t so impressive as 

the premise — and I really wanted the whole 

movie to rock. Still, it wasn’t so bad where you 

turned it off in the middle. In the end, it was 

either trying too hard or not hard enough. A 

lot of star power was nearly squandered on 

this one, but it had its moments. 

One of Cape May Film Festival’s most 

celebrated guests was featured in this film. 

Susan Sarandon had a few lines. Her appearance 

was so short and right at the quirky 

and that I didn’t want to bring it up. So, that

I 

fear that regular readers of this column 

are about to be treated to a run-on series 

of hawk watch related columns. First, 

Cape May is one of the few locations 

where migrating hawks concentrate in 

migration. You could spend a lifetime studying 

birds and not see the number of hawks an 

observer can study in a single hour on a good 

flight day. Second, I consider birds of prey 

the most fascinating of all bird groups. Third, 

watching hawks demands little effort. You 

sit on the hawk watch platform and the birds 

come to you. And finally, hawks are not the 

only birds passing in review. There are hordes 

of Tree Swallows, periodic bursts of shorebirds 

and the ever-present possibility that 

something rare might fly by. Saturday we were 

treated to the passage of a Sandhill Crane, a 

large stately bird found in the Western United 

States. You need not worry about your rudimentary 

field identification skills. There are 

lots of experienced eyes on the platform and 

everyone freely shares their knowledge. 

Hawk watching above all other brands

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

of birding is highly social. Every trip to the 

hawk watch puts me in contact with hosts of 

old friends and new acquaintances. Just like 

a hawk flight, no two days have the same mix 

of observers. On Saturday, I had the opportunity 

to spend the afternoon with Dr. Joe Jell, 

author of the Birds of Churchill (Manitoba) and 

authority on grebes and Thayer’s Gull (now 

a subspecies of Iceland Gull but formerly 

considered a distinct species). Joe, a Thayer’s 

Firster invited my opinion which sides with 

the lumpers, not the splitters, but despite our 

differing regard, we had a spirited discussion, 

in which I was much the junior partner. 

Despite our 10-year age difference, Joe and I 

shared the same mentor, Floyd Wolfarth. 

On Sunday, surrounded by an assembly 

of former Cape May hawk counters, I was 

treated to a visit from my close friend and 

New Jersey Audubon board member Wayne 

Greenstone, one of the kindest, gentlest, people 

to draw breath. We chatted for three hours 

about books, birds, environmental concerns 

and his late wife Else, hawk counter at the 

Montclair Hawk watch and one of the finest 

hawk counters to raise binoculars toward the 

sky. Else’s eyes were amazing were able to 

locate birds that were barely sub-orbital. 

Even if you don’t know anyone on the 

platform, it is impossible to not be engaged 

and engaging. Kick back and enjoy one of 

nature’s grandest spectacles. I hope to see you 

on the watch and raise glasses together under 

raptor-filled skies.

Life has been scary these past 20 

months, and some of us have turned to 

coronavirus jokes to lighten the mood 

— I’d tell you one now, but I don’t want 

to wait two weeks to see if you got it. 

For those accustomed to easing sadness 

with humor, with each bit of grim news, the 

jokes kept coming, even when in-person 

mourning was impossible. From the start of 

the pandemic, there were countless memes — 

toilet paper as currency, parents scraping their 

kids’ “honor student” stickers off the car after 

remote learning, silly handshake alternatives 

— anything to provide respite from reality. 

Not everyone is comfortable with this sort of 

gallows humor, but the people who are tend to 

find each other. This October, as we approach 

another quarantine-o-ween, consider celebrating 

the people who laugh at your dark 

puns. It’s time to gather your ghouls. 

Meet at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 

Washington Street, and explore Scarecrow 

Alley through November 2. Admission is 

free. This is the 13th year that civic groups, 

business, and individuals have been decorating 

four square-foot slices of the estate. 

Everyone starts with two stakes and some 

hay, and “munchkins,” children aged 3-10, 

get one smaller stake. Creativity runs wild, 

resulting in a variety of scarecrow characters 

and groupings. Some displays are pretty, some 

over-the-top, but they are all in good fun — 

the works of the munchkins are delightful. 

Ghost stories are a great distraction, 

especially when they storyteller links them to 

familiar places. Invite your familiar faces to 

the Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour. Tours 

last 30 minutes. Masks are required on the 

trolley, which leaves from the Washington 

Street Mall information booth at Ocean Street.

Join the “immersive theatrical event” that

what happens when a visitor shakes things 

up at the Emlen Physick Estate. You and a 

friend could solve the mystery. Tickets are 

$30 for adults and $25 for children. Masks are 

required. Parking on the grounds is free. 

Enjoy the Halloween Crafts and 

Collectibles show on Saturday, October 30 

from 10-3. And bring your littlest ghouls back 

on October 31 from 5-7, to trick or treat among 

the scarecrows.

cards afterwards. One woman is divorced and 

brings whomever she is dating at the time. The 

gentlemen are not always a good fit, but we 

always seem to make the best of it. Her latest 

conquest, however, has a habit of grabbing me 

as he leaves and planting a kiss on my lips. He 

doesn’t do that with any of the other women 

and his behavior varies. I suspect it has to do 

with how much he has had to drink. Which is 

why I think he always takes me unawares. I 

never seem to catch on. What I want to know 

is how do I break this bad habit? I don’t want 

to make a big deal of it, just a little Pavlovian

much. However, I do not like the fact that when 

we are out, he can’t keep that phone alone.

sports scores, texting work colleagues, 

responding to tweets and Instagram while I 

sit staring up at the ceiling. I’m beginning to 

wonder if this is why he didn’t have a girlfriend 

before I came along. He’s very handsome and 

very nice but I have to say this could be a deal

Make a deal with him to leave the phone 

in the car for the duration of dinner or while 

you’re at Carney’s having cocktails. If he 

dismisses you, you can, A: Find another man 

to talk to while he is otherwise absorbed and

your answer. Or B: Give him an ultimatum 

because your instincts are correct. If he is this 

detached this early in the relationship, it won’t

The Greater Cape May Historical Society announces three-day Negro Leagues conference in Cape May 

A 

three-day conference on South Jersey 

and Philadelphia’s rich history of 

Negro Leagues ball clubs and their 

impact on baseball heritage will be 

held on Tuesday, October 26 through 

Thursday, October 28 at Cape May Convention 

Hall. The conference is being presented by 

the Greater Cape May Historical Society, Cape 

May MAC, Congress Hall and the Mad Batter 

restaurant. 

The event will feature authors and historians 

presenting fascinating accounts of the 

black ballplayers who starred on the region’s 

teams, including the Atlantic City Bacharachs, 

the Philadelphia Pythians and the Cape May 

Giants. It will include a discussion of the career 

of Phillies great Dick Allen and his eligibility for 

the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

All programs will be from 4:30-7 at 

Convention Hall — tickets are $30. Both will be 

followed by a “ballpark favorites” buffet dinner

BOWSER is a bundle of fun and energy! He 

often forgets he isn't a lap dog, but this big boy 

has a lot of love to give. He came to the shelter 

when his family could no longer care for 

him. Bowser enjoys car rides but does not like 

crates. He has been good with children and 

cats in the past but would be best in a home 

with older children. 

SNOWBALL is a quirky little man who came 

to the shelter when his owners could no longer 

care for him. Snowball has a vision deficiency 

which makes him a little nervous so going 

slowly with him is important. He enjoys car 

rides and is treat motivated. Snowball would 

do well in a quiet home with no children where 

his needs will be understood.
