A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
The November birthstone is topaz, signifying honour and strength,
and once thought to bring longevity and wisdom. The flower is the
chrysanthemum, representing cheerfulness. It sounds like a month
designed for seniors returning to the GWSA! Over half of our
members have already picked up their new membership cards. Be
sure to ask at the Evergreen desk if they have an envelope with
your name. Many have been surprised to see that their renewal
dates were extended during the shutdown. While you are there, you
might want to register for all your favourite activities, unless you
prefer to do that online. To avoid waiting lists, it’s best to enrol as
soon as you can.
We are reassured that our reopening allowed members to return in
good time, and hundreds are meeting for their activities. As
regulatory authorities adjust requirements, we keep adapting to a
cycle of frequent change. Now that organizations cannot keep a
record of vaccinations, everyone must provide Ontario Proof of
Vaccination, along with government-issued identification and
contact tracing information each time they enter. As waivers are no
longer required, it is no longer necessary to issue or show IPP
Access cards. With capacity limits loosening, we hope to have
more space available in activity groups. Please follow each group’s
approved return-to-play plans, and contact Pat Gage, the Program
Committee Chair, before making any changes. That helps us remain
within guidelines and take care of each other.
Exciting things are happening. The Evergreen Restaurant has
reopened. The Book Nook library is open daily until 1:00 pm, so
you can return your books and find new ones, while enjoying the
colourful fall view over the river. The Snooker Room is back in
action with re-felted tables and new covers, and upgraded
equipment. And, you can now sign up for the Festive Holiday Trip
planned for Niagara Falls. Reserve your space today, while you
can!
Did you know that the GWSA’s Community Support Services
(CSS) has been contributing to the Seniors Community Food
Market, a weekly “farmers-market” style setting happening across
Guelph? Community Support Services is an integral part of the
GWSA and supports hundreds of vulnerable seniors in the area. If
you know someone who might benefit, please check the website for
all of their available services.
If you are looking to become involved, a few committees need
members, some activity groups are seeking leaders, and the
Succession Planning Committee is screening for new directors.
This is a members-driven organization and there is something for
everyone! Simply contact Becky MacDonald at the Evergreen
Centre if something sparks your interest, or if you have skills and
talents you’d like to share.
It is time to play at the GWSA!
JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS
A newlywed young man was sitting on the porch on a humid day, sipping ice tea with his
father.
As he talked about adult life, marriage, responsibilities, and obligations, the father
thoughtfully stirred the ice cubes in his glass and cast a clear, sober look on his son.
“Never forget your friends,” he advised, “they will become more important as you get
older.”
“Regardless of how much you love your family and the children you happen to have, you
will always need friends. Remember to go out with them occasionally (if possible), but keep
in contact with them somehow.”
“What strange advice!” thought the young man. “I just got married, I am an adult and
surely my wife and the family that we will start will be everything I need to make sense of
my life.”
Yet, he obeyed his father and kept in touch with his friends and annually increased their
number.
Over the years, he became aware that his father knew what he was talking about. In as
much as time and nature carry out their designs and mysteries on a person, friends are the
bulwarks of our life.
After 70 years of life, here is what he, I and you will have learned:
Time passes.
Life goes on.
Children grow up.
Children cease to be children and become independent. And to the parents, it breaks their
heart but the children are separated from the parents because they begin their own families.
Jobs/careers come and go.
People can’t do what they did physically when they were young.
Parents die but you move on.
Colleagues forget the favors you did.
The race to achieve slows.
But, true friends are always there, no matter how long or how many miles away they are.
A friend is never more distant than the reach of a need, intervening in your favour, waiting
for you with open arms or in some way blessing your life.
When we started this adventure called LIFE, we did not know of the incredible joys or
sorrows that were ahead.
We did not know how much we would need from each other.
Love your parents, take care of your children, but keep a group of good friends.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE by Linda Green
The Importance of Remembrance
Canadians often associate The Royal Canadian
Legion with Remembrance ceremonies and events.
Through these initiatives, we honour and remember
Canada’s fallen Veterans and help ensure Canadians
never forget. The Legion is responsible for planning
and co-ordinating annual Remembrance Day
ceremonies in communities across the country,
including the national
ceremony in Ottawa.
For many, our most widely
known activity is the annual
Poppy campaign that leads up
to Remembrance Day. Legion
members and other volunteers
distribute tens of millions of
Poppies, and gratefully accept
donations to raise money in support of Veterans and
their families.
While November is recognized as a time of
Remembrance, for the Legion and for many across
the country, Remembrance is a year-long
commitment. At any given moment, there are many
opportunities available to anyone wishing to show
their appreciation for those who served, including:
Becoming a Legion member to support Veterans
year-round
Making a donation to the Legion’s Poppy Trust
Fund at any Legion Branch
Saying “thank you” to a Veteran
Wearing a poppy
Honouring a fallen Veteran on the Legion’s Wall
of Honour and Remembrance
Planting poppy seeds or growing a garden of
Remembrance
Visiting a cenotaph
Participating in the Legion’s Pilgrimage of
Remembrance
Visiting the Canadian War Museum or local
history museums
Volunteering to help Veterans, and more!
Most importantly, take a moment now and then to
reflect on the freedoms and peace in your life, and to
remember the men and women who served and
sacrificed for all we have today.
Please pick up Membership Cards
We printed new membership cards with revised expiry dates for everyone!
Most people have already picked up their cards, but if you haven’t,
just drop by the Evergreen desk. Renewal dates were extended during the
shutdown - by over 17 months! For example, if your old membership
card shows an expiry date in August 2020, your five remaining months
became available to use in September 2021, so your new expiry date
jumps into February 2022.
Update from October 6 Board Meeting
We are pleased that our initial reopening allowed members to return as
soon as possible. The GWSA continues to refine its procedures so that
everyone can be actively involved in activities they enjoy.
Because current legislation prohibits organizations from keeping a record
of vaccination, members are now required to provide Ontario
Proof of Vaccination, along with government-issued identification and
contact tracing information each time they visit. As the GWSA is not
keeping proof of vaccination or collecting new waivers, IPP ACCESS
cards are no longer being issued and are not required.
At the entrance, every visitor is now to show their Ontario Proof of
Vaccination* and government-issued identification showing name and date of birth; provide contact tracing
information, including name, address, telephone, time of entry; and follow any required screening procedures.
* Acceptable Ontario Proof of Vaccination is your digital or paper Ontario Vaccination Receipt (2 doses
plus the 2 week waiting period) or the enhanced Ontario Vaccination Certificate (available after October
22).
Join Your Activity Groups
You need to register for all Activity Groups online at recenroll.ca, or
through any City Recreation desk including the Evergreen Centre.
Available activities are listed once their return-to-play plans have
been approved. In RecEnroll, go to Programs/Seniors/Guelph Wellington
Seniors Association and select Activity. Remember to update
your information. You can do that through RecEnroll/Edit.
You must be a GWSA member to register. To become a new GWSA
member, you can come into the Evergreen centre to register in person
or you can do so over the phone by calling the recreation line at 519-837-5699.
In-Person Activities
We remind everyone to stay true to the Return-to-Play plans that
were approved by the Board. That’s because we are bound by current
public health requirements and capacity limits. If in doubt,
contact the Program Committee Chair prior to implementing any
changes. We look forward to receiving plans from any groups
when they are ready to get started.
Participants are required to follow all current Public Health
Guidelines (which may include social distancing, adhering to
room capacity limits, wearing masks at all times when required,
using hand sanitizer, and quarantining or sanitizing shared materials
and equipment; or otherwise as the guidelines specify at the time). For activities not screened through
entering the facility, as with off-site groups, Activity Group Leaders are responsible to ensure that everyone
participating in their in-person GWSA activities meets all current screening, proof of vaccination, and contact
tracing requirements. It’s great to see everyone working together to take care of each other!
Activity Group Leaders Needed
Some Activity Groups need leaders so they can return to play. Beginners
are always welcome. The following groups are looking for leaders:
Bid Euchre; 6-Handed Euchre; Canasta; Darts; Dominoes; Euchre
– Wednesdays; MahJong; Scrabble; Texas Hold-'em Poker; Walking
Club. If you would like to help out, please contact Becky MacDonald
Committee - pat.gage@gwsa-guelph.ca). It's a great way to stay active
and connect with others!
The Evergreen Café
As the City works through COVID protocols, the Evergreen Dining Room has
reopened with a new menu (with grab-and-sit or grab-and-go options). Frozen
meals are also available for purchase. As we are responding to Public Health
and Provincial regulations, this situation continues to change. Please check the
website for the latest updates. We have many exciting changes this fall as the
space has been reimagined for the reopening of the Evergreen Centre.
Book Nook Library: Now Open
The Evergreen Seniors Centre ‘Book Nook’ library is open Monday-Friday
from 9am-1pm. It has a wonderful collection of fiction and non-fiction
books, videocassettes, CDs and DVDs. Now is the time to return your
books and select some new reading material! Upon entering, members must
use the sanitization station which will be placed outside the library door. Six
people are allowed, and all members must wear a mask at all times. The volunteer
is to sign out the library books. Returned books will be placed in a
box for 72 hours before reappearing on shelves.
CSS Supports Community
Food Markets
The Seniors Community Food
Market is a weekly “farmersmarket”
style market at six
subsidized housing locations
across Guelph. The project
aims to increase food access
to 300 vulnerable seniors by
distributing fresh produce,
pantry and hygiene items, and
providing age-specific education,
including Diabetes Support.
The Seniors Community Food Markets provide multiple benefits for seniors, including:
Addressing immediate food security needs by providing nutritious food and necessities.
Providing a meaningful point of social contact, helping seniors stay safe, active, and connected to the

community
Creating meaningful volunteer opportunities for community members and equip participants to reach out
for help if/when needed
This project is a partnership between the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association and HOPE House Guelph
and has strategic partnerships, including: The County of Wellington - Housing Services, The SEED, VON,
and Guelph Independent Living.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silklike
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble
delicately shaded paintings. In
fact, the needle is held and operates
in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil.
The Bunka artist uses many different
stitch techniques in order
to achieve the desired effect of
depth and interest, but unlike
other forms of needle art, there
are no knots to tie and mistakes
are easily corrected. This group
is for all skill levels and meets
every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon in Room 3.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which
four players use solid paddles
made of wood or composite materials
to hit a perforated polymer
ball over a net. The sport
shares features of other racquet
sports: the dimensions and layout
of a badminton court and a
net and rules similar to tennis,
with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some
fun, laughter, socialization and
exercise. It’s easy to learn, but
can be challenging for those
with a competitive nature. All
levels of skill invited. Pickleball
equipment is provided.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our
group. Enjoy some gentle exercise,
friendship and fun. Membership
is available to all paidup
GWSA members for a $10
fee every six months. You also
have the option of paying $1.00
per game. Register the first time
you play. Beginners are welcome
and instruction is available.
The group plays Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested
in learning the game, or
have played in the past and
want to get back into it, please
drop by the Snooker Room.
You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open
weekdays between 9:00 am and
4:00 pm and any other time the
Evergreen Centre may be open.
The primary focus of the club
is to have fun, build friendships
13
and socialize. Your snooker
skill level is irrelevant, so don’t
feel intimidated if you are a beginner.
Prospective members
may visit the club room up to
three times without charge to
help with their decision on
whether to join. While most of
the current members are men,
there is a small group of women
who play regularly (typically on
Tuesday mornings), so ladies,
don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to
all paid-up members of the
GWSA on payment of the prescribed
annual snooker activity
fee. The current fee of $70 (plus
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook — “A Lending Library”
We are now re-opened
Monday to Friday 9 am - 1 pm
* * * *
Hello Everyone, the Book Nook is now re-opened
and we look forward to seeing you all come in and
browse.
Due to health reasons and COVID-19, masks must
be worn at all times, and members no longer will sign
out books but will hand them to the volunteer who
will sign it out on your behalf. Please have your IPP
card or membership card available which has your
name on it. Also, all magazines have been removed
due to COVID protocols.
We have recently purchased new books for you to
enjoy, one of which is the new book in the Seven
Sister Series “The Missing Sister” by Lucinda Riley
which was recently published.
The book I am going to tell you about is “A
Gambling Man” by David Baldacci. Aloysius
Archer just got out of prison and plans to head to
California and make a fresh start. Along the way, he
stops in Reno where he meets Liberty Callahan, an
aspiring actress who plans to go to Hollywood to
become famous.
While in Reno, he buys a 1939 Delahaye
convertible which he can drive on this long trip,
along with Liberty who he offers a ride to. They
arrive in Bay Town, California, where Archer has
arranged to meet with P.I. Willie Dash and train with
him to become his apprentice. He lands the job with
Dash but immediately is working a blackmail case
involving a wealthy politician running for Mayor.
It seems there are others who do not want him to
become mayor and murders start taking place.
Liberty manages to find a job at a local gambling den
where one of the murders takes place, as Archer and
Dash try to find who is responsible for these murders.
There are many twists and turns in this page-turning
book, which I hope you will enjoy reading as much
as I did.
Stay safe and healthy.
Happy Reading,
not receive a refund if you are denied bus entrance due to a positive COVID-19 screening and/or do not
present Ontario Proof of Vaccination* and government-issued identification. Should there be a mandatory
provincial shutdown due to COVID-19 or GWSA cancels the trip due to lack of participation, all
participants will receive a full refund to their method of payment.
Don’t Wait! That means booking your trip before the trip must be cancelled due to low participation. It
takes time to put these trips together and we need your commitment to make these trips happen!
The Travel Committee must give the number of bookings by November 18, 2021, and if there are not
enough reservations at that time, the trip will be cancelled!
Parking: Please do not park your vehicles in the Evergreen parking lot while you are on a day trip.
Vehicles must be left at the Carousel parking area in Riverside Park where you will board the bus. This
allows for other members to have a place to park when they come throughout the day.
Transportation: reserved is a coach with lavatory. Should participation warrant, a smaller coach
without lavatory may be taken. There will not be assigned seating on this trip. Seating will be available
on a first come first serve basis. Please refrain from using scented products during GWSA trips.
Accessibility:
(1) We regret there will not be any wheelchair access on the bus for this trip. Walkers are permitted and
can be stored in the cargo area of the bus. The coach will be sanitized and sold at full capacity. Masks will
be required for all participants.
(2) Travellers with a disability, who require assistance during the trip, must be accompanied by a person
who is fully capable of rendering such assistance (this person must be an adult for some trips). The cost for
the assistant will be the fee published for the trip.
