Intergenerational Planning

– These words mean many

things to many people, and this

is probably the most diverse

area of planning where I am

regularly asked to assist. The

baby boomers have undoubtedly

made asset wealth on property

and some may have inherited or generated wealth.

However, the questions they ask are “Will we run out of

money“ – “Can we pass our wealth to our offspring”.

Initially, simple planning such as Wills* and Lasting

Powers of Attorney, of which there are two – Health

& Welfare and Property and Financial affairs is the

starting point. I work with fellow professionals where

necessary to create these structures.

Every person has circumstances which are different,

which is why it is critical a full discussion takes

place. Following that start point, it is a matter of

understanding what you are trying to achieve with

all that you have, and then create a bespoke plan

that is flexible to meet any changing circumstances

i.e. cover home fees whilst protecting the estate,

having access to capital and protecting the estate.

Inheritance tax you choose to pay if you don’t use all

of the opportunities to mitigate it. Allowances such

as nil rate bands, Resident Nil rate Bands and annual

exemptions which are sufficient for most people to

achieve their outcomes.

Where more complex situations arise, I will look

to include any number of the following: PETS over

7 years and structures that are effective after 2

years, Business relief, Trusts, Gifting, Loan Trusts,

Discounted Gift Trusts, Charitable donations, Rysaffe

structures, Protection, Tenants in Common, Pensions

and annual exemptions. Increasingly we see changes

to Gifts with reservation and Deprivation of assets

legislation, but with careful planning and flexible

arrangements you can have your cake and eat it

ensuring that taxation is not the largest inheritor of

your estate, but your family are.

So you know what to do – Just ASK!

Be there for our teens

– foster for Rochdale Borough Council

A woman who gave up her career to become a foster carer is encouraging others

to give teenagers a loving home.

Supporting cared for children through the routine and stability of education is a key part of the role,

and Rochdale Borough Council is on the lookout for people who can make a real difference to a

child’s life and become a foster carer.

Trish, who’s became a foster carer with Rochdale council a year ago, gave up her

teaching job to foster and she says that seeing the children she cares for thrive in

education is a rewarding part of the job: “I have transferred my teaching skills to use

with the children in my care. I feel that I am making a big difference in enabling the

children to be the best they can be educationally and also in their personal growth.”

There are over 65,000 children and young people living in foster care placements

across England and around 55,000 households foster with their local authority.

However, there continues to be a decline in the number of people becoming foster

carers and councils across England are looking for people to come forward as

new carers.

Trish is encouraging people across Rochdale to come forward and support local

children in the borough, she said: “It’s a challenging but rewarding role, which has enabled me to

achieve a better work-life balance as I am at home during the day and not rushing in from work at

6pm every night. I’d really encourage people to contact the council’s fostering team and take that

first step.”

The former teacher has fostered many teenagers, and she’s encouraging others to think about

fostering teens, she said: “I love fostering teenagers through this difficult yet exciting stage of their

lives. I can teach them vital life skills that will set them up for their future. They have often already

gained a level of life experience, which enables them to be independent and for me to learn from

them too. Teenagers in foster care often have an undeserved stigma attached to them, however,

they usually just require the safety and stability of a loving family who will listen and respond to

their needs.”

The council is always on the lookout for people who wish to take up the rewarding role of being and

fostering carer. We are currently running a campaign urging people who are considering fostering

teenagers, who are often very hard to place, to get in touch.

We also offer supported lodgings as a type of fostering. This is where you look after an older

teen, who has a level of independence, so you’re providing more support with a home, food and

essentials rather than day to day care.

Training, support and guidance is available from our fostering team and you will

have a dedicated social worker to support you throughout.

Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and

education, said: “We have an increasing need for new foster carers. We

particularly need to recruit carers for older children and teenagers and for

children who need more specialist care. If you’ve got experience working with

children through your profession, volunteering or raising your own family we’d

like to hear from you, you can make such a huge difference.”

Remembrance

Sunday

Last year, for the first time, the

Remembrance Sunday Parade didn’t take

place, although the poppy wreaths were laid

on an individual basis, down at the Cenotaph

in Town. This year it will be back to normal

and is being held on Sunday 14th November.

Recent news that the Royal British Legion

has held its Centenary and launched the

annual Poppy appeal. The money raised

from donations helps veterans and families

of servicemen and women that have been

involved in all conflicts both past and present.

And the usual arguments of how to wear

your Poppy can now be put to bed. The

recommendation from the RBL is to wear

your Poppy with pride!

Last year, up here in Healey, your Local

Councillors; Kieran Heakin, Shah Wazir and

myself along with friends and family Angela

Heakin and Tricia Ayrton, all helped to

organise an impromptu service appropriate

for the lockdown conditions of the time.

So this year, on the 11th of the 11th @11am

the poppy wreath will again be laid on the

Unknown Soldier at the Healey Triangle.

It will again be rather informal but we will have the sound of the Last Post

followed by Reveille and then we will finish off the proceedings with the

Kohima Epitaph.

Syke Walk & Talk Group

WALK TO WATERGROVE VIA LOBDEN

The route is about 5.5 miles and is

moderately demanding involving a

fairly steep climb of about one mile

from Syke to Lobden. Most of the

route is on surfaced roads and paths

but strong footwear is recommended.

Leaving Syke Chapel head north on Dewhirst

road which climbs steeply to Lobden golf

course.

After just over half a mile there is a signpost

on the left. Turn right here. The path descends

quite steeply into Long Shoot Clough where it

becomes a cobbled track.

Take care the cobbles can be slippery when

wet. At the bottom of the Clough take the path

to the right. The path runs along the western

side of Watergrove with good views of the

reservoir and at the southern end through a

wooded area.

The surfaced road goes to the left and

downhill to Whitworth but continue ahead

along the trackway in front of you which leads

on to an embankment.

Turn right following the trackway along the

top of the embankment. This is the course of

a tramway which carried coal from Cartridge

Nook Colliery to Lobden. The site of the

colliery is marked by spoil heaps to your left.

In front of you is a gateway. Go through the

gate and follow the track which bends to the

left. The undulating route passes the remains

of several farms demolished when Watergrove

reservoir was constructed in the 1930’s.

About 40 yards before the gate a path leads

off to the right. Take this path which leads you

down on to Clough House lane.

Follow the lane until just before it takes a

sharp bend to the right. On the left is a short

track to a gate. The public footpath is difficult

to see but walk forward bearing slightly to the

right towards the line of the fence. Continue to

walk alongside the fence until you reach the

south-west corner of the field where there is

a stile. Cross the stile and turn right following

the zig-zag path to the bottom of the hill.

Continue forwards until you reach the path

which runs from Wardle to Syke.

Turn right along the path. The path takes you

along the northern side of Rydings Dam and

up a flight of steps onto Rydings road. Turn

left and after a few yards cross the stile on

your right. Take care going down the steep

bank. Follow the path which takes you through

a valley following the course of the Fanny

Brook. Deer are often seen in this area. There

are several stiles to cross and care is needed

when crossing the brook either by a bridge of

two planks or by the stepping stones.

The footpath brings you back to Dewhirst road.

Turn left and it is only a short walk to Syke

Chapel.

Syke Walk and Talk Group was

formed almost 15 years ago.

We offer at least 2 walks each Friday all

year round and attempt to provide suitable

walks for all abilities. The walks are entirely

free. Toilet facilities are normally available at

Syke Chapel who are also able to offer tea/

coffee and biscuits at modest prices after

the walk.

The walks are are free to attend and lead by

trained walk leaders with a good knowledge

of the Syke area.

Walks leave on Friday’s at 10am. Please

arrive around 9.45 for registration. The

meeting point is outside Syke Chapel, Syke

Road OL12 9TF

Our walks utilise public footpaths and roads

around Syke and we walk in all weathers.

It is important to come properly equipped

with boots and suitable clothing.

Syke Chapel has now reopened. Toilet

facilities are available and tea/coffee and

biscuits after the walks.

Covid-19

Whilst restrictions have now been relaxed the

virus still represents a risk. It is advisable to

maintain a safe distance from other walkers.

The Santa Express

comes to Whitworth

Since Santa Express was such a huge success last year we have decided

it will return to the streets of Whitworth for a second year running!

Father Christmas will be travelling through our town in a custom-built sleigh between

5pm and 7pm on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of December. He will be

sledding between Broadley and Shawforth and calling at most of the residential

areas on the way driving slowly to allow families to wave as he passes by. It would

be impossible to cover every single street, but the volunteers have worked hard to

ensure that you won’t have far to go to see him drive by.

Residents are encouraged to come out and meet Father Christmas as he makes

short stops at allocated points to allow children to collect a bag of sweets as a

Christmas treat. The sleigh will stop at local businesses, including Basils, the Red Lion

and The Oxford as well as Cowm reservoir where the Whitworth Waterski centre will

be decked in Christmas Lights and Bubbles and Brews will be warming people up with

delicious hot drinks to go along with the festivities. Watch out on facebook for a Santa

Express schedule and posters nearer the time!

Father Christmas wants to see everyone out and waving this year joining in on the

festivities after a difficult 18 months. He would love to see everyone’s Christmas Lights

and decorations cheering up the valley. Please send in any photos or videos of the
