Lynnfield salutes our veterans
The day kicked off with a
rolling car parade, which snaked
its way from the Our Lady of
the Assumption parking lot to
the Lynnfield Housing Authority
on Ross Drive all the way to the
common, where several creatively-decorated
cars lined South
Common Street.
Girls Scout troops, including
the Brownies and Daisies, led the
crowd with a rendition of “God
Bless America,” while Boy Scout
Troop 48 and Cub Scout Troop
48 displayed flags. The Lynnfield
High School (LHS) band played
the national anthem and other
military-themed musical pieces.
An honor guard fired a rifle
salute.
Several local leaders and officials
were on hand to offer their
thoughts.
Rev. Robert Bacon of St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church said
Kernwood
Wine & Spirits
these times are full of differences
regarding COVID, politics and
education within the community.
The veteran called on residents
to “learn from our veterans, who
put aside their differences to
work as one to help us.”
Select Board member Joe
Connell, a decorated veteran and
retired colonel who served in the
United States Army for 30 years,
thanked his fellow veterans and
their families “for the sacrifices
they make (as) without your support
we would not be there today.”
Connell said there’s a reason
there is no apostrophe in Veterans
Day.
“It’s a day to remember veterans,
not a day that belongs to
veterans,” he said. “Veterans
have been the foundation of
building the character and fabric
of this great country. And veterans
of today and of the future
continue that legacy.”
Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North
Reading) said the needs of veterans
and their families must be
prioritized.
“Today we honor our state and
nation’s veterans, but it’s also
important to honor our veterans
with the services they need,” said
Jones, who reminded attendees
that Thursday also marked the
100th anniversary of the dedication
of the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier three years after the end
of World War I. Jones said it remains
an important monument
and “a reminder that our nation
will never forget those who have
served.”
State Sen. Brendan Crighton
(D-Lynn) thanked veterans for
“putting their lives on the line for
their country,” adding the pandemic
has “disproportionately
affected our veterans.
“In Massachusetts we are
strong in our benefits for veterans,
but we can do more… not
only to improve benefits for our
veterans, but also recognize that
families make sacrifices, too.”
Connell and Siegel thanked
School Committee member Kate
DePrizio and her third grade
Brownie Troop 67136 (community
service project) and the first
grade Daisy Troop 83618 (in
support) for delivering 431 cards
(containing restaurant gift cards)
to Lynnfield veterans. Siegel
said that DePrezio reached out to
him and didn’t flinch when she
learned there were 433 veterans
living in town.
“She said ‘no problem’ and
about two weeks later on Nov. 4,
she had the cards.”
Select Board Chair Dick
Dalton thanked Siegel, commending
him for a ceremony
“that reflects the town’s respect
and gratitude for our veterans.”
Dalton said veterans are “ordinary
people who have done
something extraordinary so that
we may all enjoy the freedom we
treasure today. Our debt to these
men and women can never be repaid
but our gratitude and respect
must last forever.”
He called attention to the many
sacrifices veterans make and
also the uncertainty of whether
“Mom or Dad will live through
their next combat tour.
“Veterans chose to set aside
their personal ambitions and
dreams to assure the well-being
of our great nation and give us
freedom,” Dalton said. “It’s impossible
to put a price on that.”
Dalton concluded his remarks
by reading an excerpt from
Charles M. Province’s poem,
“It is the Soldier.” The poem
attributes the many freedoms
Americans enjoy to soldiers.
“It’s a poignant reminder to
us all of what the veteran means
to us as citizens of this great
country,” said Dalton.
The celebration was closed out
by LHS senior Andrew Scangas
and sophomore Lucas Adreani,
who played Taps, the military’s
traditional final call of the day.
“We were a little bit nervous
to play in front of a large crowd,
but it was an honor to play,” said
Adreani.
