BOOST hasbeen supporting children’sliteracy in Mid Canterburyfor eightyears andnowhasover60 volunteers. BOOST programmecoordinator Judith Sommerville said theprogramme is in 19 schoolsacross the district with most schoolshaving 25 tutors, each tutor working twiceaweekwith four children. Covid,floodsand windhas causedplenty of disruption forpupils thisyear. ‘‘I thinkchildren lovethe BOOSTtutors becauseitis someone who is constant in their lives,theylove it when they comebacktoschool and their tutorisstillthere.’’ One on onetutoringisan important aspectofthe BOOSTprogramme. ‘‘One of the biggest things thetutors do is helpbuild the children's confidence,’’ Mrs Sommervillesaid. Every year this continues to be an opportunity for thieves or targeted by groups who see this as an easy option for their owngains. Especially if anything is leftinthe vehicle • Close all windows and sunroofs • Donot leave valuables of anykindinthe car and visible,especially at nightorwhen your vehicle is unattended forsometime. This can include medicines,clothes, sports equipment, hunting gear,laptops, camera’s, phones,etc. • Ifyou do have to leave anything in the car ensureitisout of sightand well hidden • Donot leave documents with personal information eg.Cards,passport, licence, entrycards • Donot leave keysinyour vehicle, including house,boat, etc. • Ifyou have to parkyour vehicle in your drive, parkitinawell lit area with the fuel entrypoint hardagainstawall or bush • Vehicleswith ahigh pricepoint or customised maywanttoconsider having their windows engraved Thievesdonot like: • Well lit areas • Securitycameras • Openspaces visible to neighbours/street/ public • Anything thatcan make it difficult for athief to entereg.
